Nancy Sherman is a distinguished University Professor and Professor of Philosophy at . She is a faculty affiliate of Georgetown’s Kennedy Institute and teaches on occasion at Georgetown University Law Center. In 1997-1999, she served as the inaugural holder of the Distinguished Chair in Ethics at the United States Naval Academy. She is the author of The Untold War: Inside the Hearts, Minds, and Souls of our Soldiers (W.W. Norton 2010); Stoic Warriors: The Ancient Philosophy Behind the Military Mind (Oxford 2005); Making A Necessity of Virtue: Aristotle and Kant on Virtue (Cambridge 1997); The Fabric of Character: Aristotle’s Theory of Virtue (Oxford 1989). She is also the editor of Critical Essays on the Classics: Aristotle’s Ethics (Rowman and Littlefield 1999).

Nancy Sherman was an Assistant and Associate Professor of Philosophy at and has held visiting positions at Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland. She has written over 50 published articles in the general area of ethics, history of moral philosophy, ancient philosophy, military ethics, moral psychology, trauma and resilience, and the emotions. Her work has been translated into many languages. Sherman has been the recipient of various awards, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the American Philosophical Society, the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Philosophical Society, the Mellon Foundation, and the Newcombe Fellowship Foundation of the Woodrow Wilson.

Prof. Sherman holds a Ph.D. from in philosophy, where she received Harvard’s George Plympton Adam’s Prize for the most distinguished doctoral dissertation in the area of history of philosophy. She also holds an M. Litt. in philosophy from and a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College, magna cum laude, with honors. Sherman is also a graduate of the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute and has received their Gary O. Morris prize for the most distinguished essay.

In October of 2005, Sherman was part of a small team invited by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs to visit Guantanamo Bay Detention Center to observe and advise on medical and psychological conditions of detainees and matters of medical ethics. Sherman’s work on military ethics has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, The San Diego Tribune, The Denver Post, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Dallas News, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, The Baltimore Sun, The Hartford Courant, The Providence Journal and dozens of other metropolitan and regional newspapers, as well as on-line forums, including military.com. She has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, PBS, WB11, FOX news and has been a guest several times on Bob Abernathy’s Religion and Ethics Newsweekly. She has been a featured guest on over 40 radio stations nationwide and internationally, including NPR’s “The Diane Rehm Show,” “This American Life” and the “Kojo Nnamdi Show,” and many NPR local affiliates. She has also been featured on Australian Broadcasting Company. She lectures widely at universities, institutes, and war colleges here and abroad.

Sherman lives in Kensington, Maryland with her husband, Marshall Presser. They have two children, Kala and Jonathan, aged 28 and 25.
