Kenmare News [email protected] Page 31 Special Olympics Ireland has offered to hold the 2014 Munster Regional Golf Games at Kenmare Golf Club, during May 2014. This is a major honour for Kenmare GC which has kindly offered to make the course available for the event. However to host the event is a major undertaking and requires the recruitment of approximately 30/40 volunteers. Ideally, a knowledge of golf is beneficial but not necessary! However an open, humorous, committed attitude to working with people with intellectual disability is a great advantage. For all those involved the benefits far outweigh the time and effort expended! If you would like to become involved with us, in hosting the games, please contact any of our fulltime coaches/volunteers – Anne Murphy, Honor Fitzgerald, Rita O’Brien, Deirdre Rodgers, Mary Brosnan, Mary Hodnett, Coley Keating, Steve Rowe, Paul Brown, Jim Brosnan, John Sheppard, Peter Cronin or Mike Murphy. The summer is fast approaching (and may well arrive one of these years) and our football and hurling teams are in the thick of things at all levels. The biggest disappointment has to be our exit at the hand of St. Mary’s a couple of weeks back in the Intermediate Championship but it was always going to be a tough ask, especially over in Killorglin. Our pitch continues to improve, again thanks to the club members who have been working away unseen to get that right and if it stopped raining for five minutes we’d be flying! We recently had our medal presentation also which was great for our Senior footballers and hurlers who got their medals and jerseys presented to them. Fully deserved for the huge commitment that was given last year by all involved.

Intermediate Football Championship Kenmare 1-12 St. Mary’s 0-19 Lost by four and in championship you are always left with the ‘might-have- been’s.’ At times it felt like this game was there for us and then it just seemed to slip away – aided undoubtedly by a stellar performance from Bryan Sheehan. The returning Stephen O’Brien pointed when Kevin O’Sullivan was hauled to the ground. A minute later Stephen latched onto a nicely flighted Alan O’Leary pass, put on the afterburners and slotted to the net. And it was us who started brightest in the second period. Alan and Kevin worked hard in the corner and Shane Duncan pointed at the end. Stephen O’Brien hit another beauty to put us back in the lead before Bryan Sheehan levelled using the outside of the right boot. From there Bryan Sheehan kicked St. Mary’s out of sight and the Championship was over for us before it even got started. points in Kenmare. SFL Round 2 Kenmare 2-6 St. Pat’s 0-9 A great win away from home and our first points of the league. Alan O’Leary certainly stood out with three points and three assists as did Aaron O’Callaghan at the back. After the first round loss to Skellig Rangers it was great to get something on the board.

SFL Round 3 Kenmare 1-6 Tarbert 0-9 A point is a point and in ways this felt like a win. Speaking of points, they were hard to come by with a gale force wind to contend with and in the second half both sides struggled to put together moves as the wind swept relentlessly across the pitch. Both ‘keepers were kept busy and in the end Aidan Crowley had a simple tap over free (they all look simple when you Kenmare Under 10’s are not taking them yourself!) to bring the sides level and keep half the
