Restrictions: Please note that NBC 5 and nbcchicago.com has a live TV and live streaming partnership with the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle. Top storylines

Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski Runs for Charity Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle executive race director Carey Pinkowski will be taking to the streets of Chicago for the 2018 event to raise funds for charity. Pinkowski will be running on behalf of the American Cancer Society. “I have seen so many people in my life — my father, my dear friends and other individuals — battle cancer and this cause has always been important to me,” he said. “It is humbling to participate among a group of runners who make their running more impactful by raising funds for a charitable cause. Over the past 16 years, I have watched more than 100,000 charity runners cross our finish line. It really highlights the beauty of our collective spirit in the sport.”

Pinkowski toed the line at the Shamrock Shuffle 8K for the last time in 1988, finishing third in a swift time of 24:07. Three decades later, he is looking forward to participating with thousands of individuals eager to celebrate the opening of the Chicago outdoor running season.

Defending Champion Stephen Sambu Returns to Chase a Fourth Consecutive Victory Three-time Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K champion (2015, 2016 and 2017) Stephen Sambu (Tucson, Ariz.) returns to the streets of Chicago to chase a fourth consecutive victory, and to officially kick off the spring running season.

Sambu, the world’s fastest man ever over the 8K distance (22:01.1), became the second male athlete in the event’s history to score the elusive hat trick, winning in 2015, 2016 and 2017. After three dominating performances, he now owns the fourth, sixth and fourteenth fastest times in the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K record books.

His speed and knowledge of the course sets him up for another forceful performance at this year’s event. He remains a direct threat to the Shamrock Shuffle 8K course record (22:35), set in 1998 by James Kariuki (KEN).

Begley, a six-time U.S. national champion and a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team in the 10,000 meters, won in 26:50, the fastest women’s time since 2006.

Bairu, a two-time NCAA cross-country champion and three-time Big Ten cross-country champion at the Univeristy of Wisconsin-Madison, broke the finish line tape in 23:38 in his Chicago racing debut, bettering last year’s men’s winner (John Kemboi of Keyna) by one second. For the third-consecutive year, the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K featured an Elite Club Competition for USA Track & Field (USATF)-member running clubs. Both winning teams from last year repeated as champions. Wisconsin Runner Racing Team (Racine, WI) placed first for the men and Runablaze Iowa (Des Moines, IA) ranked first among the women. This year also marked the beginning of the Elite Club Competition. The Elite Club Competition started as a way to give top distance runners in the Midwest a unique opportunity to compete head to head. The inaugural competition welcomed 21 USA Track & Field (USATF)-member running clubs to the fast and flat streets of downtown Chicago. Chicago’s own Fleet Feet/Nike racing team beat Iowa’s Runablaze for the women’s title, and the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project took down Racine’s Wisconsin Runner racing team for the men’s title.

27 Key moments in event history

Emmanuel Korir crossed the line first as the individual men’s champion in 24:18, and 2005 Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K and Bank of America winner, Deena Kastor, topped the women’s field in 27:15. Kastor set the 8K American Record in Chicago in 2005 when she ran 24:35.

2008 The 29th annual Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle reached its participant capacity nearly two months in advance of the event, and more than 22,600 runners completed the race.

“It is astounding how popular this event and recreational running in Chicago has become since I first started working on this event nearly 20 years ago,” said Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski. “This is truly a Chicago race with more than 90% of our participants from the area.”

On a slightly overcast day, but under nearly ideal racing conditions, Ohio’s Brian Olinger crushed the men’s field, cruising to a 25 second victory in 23:09. Luke Watson, the 2007 Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle champion, settled for second in 23:34.

On the women’s side, Annie Gasway from Gurnee, IL out-dueled Chicago’s Claudia Becque by two seconds to break the tape first in 29:03.

2007 The 28th annual Shamrock Shuffle sold out with an increased field size of 30,000 runners. “The excitement this race generates each spring is always inspiring,” said Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski. “The celebratory atmosphere that comes with the return to warmer weather, the outdoors and the beautiful Chicago running paths is contagious.”

On a warm and sun-filled morning, the men’s race saw Luke Watson from Madison, WI beat a strong contingent of Hansons- Brooks Distance Project runners. Watson held on strong down Columbus Drive to break the tape first in 23:26. Josh Moen from the Hansons-Brooks finished second six seconds later, and a total of eight members from the Hansons-Brooks finished inside the top 13.

The women’s race saw Chicago’s very own, Tera Moody run away from the field with time to spare. Moody put 32 seconds between herself and second place finisher, Olga Romanova. Moody comfortably won in 27:09.

2006 Chad Johnson needed a strong kick to win the men’s title and Constantina Tomescu-Dita was in control start to finish in the women’s race among 25,000 registered participants at the 27th annual Shamrock Shuffle.

Battling swirling winds in downtown Chicago, Johnson worked with Hanson’s Brooks Distance Project teammate Josh Eberly and began reeling in early leader Khalid Khannouchi after the 4-mile mark. Johnson passed the former two-time world record-holder in the marathon with 200 meters to go on Columbus Drive, and Eberly, also closing fast, got Khannouchi just before the finish. Johnson’s winning time was 23:52. Eberly clocked 23:56 and Khannouchi 23:57.

In the women’s competition, Tomescu-Dita, 36, of Romania, ran by herself almost the entire race and won comfortably in 26:27.

2005 Among a field of an event record 22,500 runners, American runner Deena Kastor took advantage of the high 40-degree temperatures, very little wind and fast course to set an American record 8K time of 24:36. The previous record, 25:02, was set by in 1991.

In the men’s race, American Brian Sell repeated his 2004 Shamrock Shuffle championship, crossing the finish line in 23:17, only two seconds ahead of Leszek Beigala of Poland. Sell is only the second male to post back-to-back championships in the

28 Key moments in event history

event. Shaun Creighton of Australia won in both 1999 and 2000.

2004 The 25th Anniversary Shamrock Shuffle was a great success with a record 22,382 registered runners. The Shamrock Shuffle has become a traditional Spring right of passage to kick off the running season in Chicago. In spite of dire predictions of bad weather, Race morning turned out to be perfect for running with sunny skies and temperatures in the 60’s.

The 2004 Shamrock Shuffle marked the birth of two new stars, American Brian Sell and Russian Tatyana Chulakh.

Brian Sell’s “Braveheart” story began in February when Sell led at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials until he reached mile 20, where he crashed and burned. On March 28, justice was done as Sell achieved the greatest victory of his life. He won The 25th Anniversary Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K in 23:31, ahead of a record field.

The women’s race was equally gripping. Course Record Holder Kathy Butler from Great Britain was struggling with the effects of a cold early in the race and dropped back 50 yards behind the leaders Katie McGregor and Tatyana Chulakh. At 3 miles Butler resumed the lead only to be passed by the patient 21-year-old Russian Tatyana Chulakh who, like Sell, achieved her first major victory in the U.S.A. finishing in 25:56.

Local favorite 42-year-old Jenny Spangler, winner of the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 1996, finished a solid 4th place in 27:33 as she completed her preparation for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in St. Louis.

2003 History was made at The 24th Shamrock Shuffle as Shaun Creighton and Collette Liss became the first-ever three-time champions of the world’s largest 8K road race.

Australian and two-time Olympian Creighton, 35, finished atop the men’s field with a first place time of 23:13 carving out his mark in the event’s history as the first-ever to three-peat in The Shamrock Shuffle. Creighton broke from the pack shortly after the 4-mile mark to beat second place finisher Brian Sell, 24, of Rochester Hills, Mich. by six seconds.

In addition to a stellar professional running career, Creigthon is studying to be in lawyer back in Australia. While most athletes sought out rest and relaxation the night before the race, Creighton found himself in the midst of the Australian bar exam.

Valparaiso University graduate Collette Liss, 29, of Indianapolis also made her mark in the Shamrock Shuffle by becoming the first three-time female champion in the event’s history. Liss’ first place time of 26:14 was well ahead of second place finisher Jenny Crain of Eugene, Org. by 25 seconds. Liss separated herself from the women’s field with a 4:52 first mile and ran steady throughout the race. Liss, who won The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K in 1999 and 2000, will leave for Switzerland to compete in the IAAF World Cross-Country Championships.

Liss and Crieghton will each take home $1,250 for their victories. The total prize purse for the event was $8,800.

Locally, Christopher Birchall, 24, finished at 23:51 to be fastest man among all Chicagoans who participated in the Race. Megan Levin was the fastest female at 29:15 among the field of thousands of Chicago women who ran in what many say was the best ever Shamrock Shuffle.

2002 The Shamrock Shuffle, the world’s largest 8K, brought more than 17,000 participants to Grant Park on a cold spring morning to kick-off the start of Chicago’s running season. Australian Shaun Creighton (35, Albuquerque, NM) successfully defended his title in 22:57 while new-comer Priscilla Hein (25, Indianapolis, IN) won her first 8K road race in 26:08.

A total of 17,470 participants took part in the event, including 15,917 runners in the 8K race and 1,298 walkers in the 5K

29 Key moments in event history

Fitness Walk.

The men’s race was very competitive from the start as the lead pack - including former champions Creighton, John Kariuki and Mark Coogan as well as new-comer Michael Aish - stayed together until mile 4. Creighton pulled away from the pack for the sprint down Columbus Drive, winning for the second consecutive year, seconds ahead of runner-up Aish (23:06).

Priscilla Hien, (25, Indianapolis, IN) a cross-country and track specialist, had never entered an 8K road race until Sunday. Running away from the women’s field, Hein finished comfortably ahead of runner-up Nicole Jefferson (25, Arvada, CO). -Smith (40, San Louis Obispo, CA) finished first in the masters division (over 40). Somers-Smith was The 1992 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Champion and a 1996 Olympian in the marathon. Creighton and Hein will each take home $1,250 for their victories out of the $8,800 event purse.

2001 The Shamrock Shuffle, now the largest 8K race in the world, brought a record 16,582 participants to Grant Park on a clear, cool spring morning to help kick-off the start of Chicago’s outdoor running season. Australian Shaun Creighton (34, Albuquerque, NM) won with a blistering time of 22:51. Canadian Kathy Butler (27, Madison, WI) set a new women’s event record of 25:25 with her first Shamrock Shuffle victory in two appearances. Creighton and Butler each took home $1,500 for their victories out of the event record $10,000 purse. Butler earned an additional $1,000 for her event record.

Farther back in the pack, Warren Utes, at the age of 80, set a national age group record by completing the 8K in 37:08, beating the previous record by an amazing three minutes. The growth of The Shamrock Shuffle has truly been phenomenal. Since 1997, the number of registered participants has risen from 8,467 to 16,582 – a 96 percent increase during the four- year period.

2000 In the closest finish in Shamrock Shuffle history, Mark Coogan (33, Frederick, MD) and Todd Williams (31, Knoxville, TN) set a time of 22:59 in the 8K (4.97 mile) race with Coogan beating Williams by less than a half-step. The March 26th race attracted 13,822 participants. Collette Liss (26, Valparaiso, IN) not only successfully defended her title but also set a new course record of 25:26 in the process, 27 seconds faster than the previous record set by Marian Sutton in 1998. Runners were competing for a total purse of $8,000.

Under beautiful blue skies and a 51 F lakeside temperature, the biggest cheers of the day went to a 46-year-old middle-of- the-pack runner. Chicago’s own Oprah Winfrey toed the Start Line up front with the elite athletes, wishing them well before tackling the distance herself and greeting spectators and other runners along the way. She finished in a very respectable 51:55. An amazing 75 percent of the 11,091 pre-registered runners for The Shamrock Shuffle signed up online, taking advantage of both the convenience and the $4 discount. Race organizers offered online registration for the first time in 1999 with 1,573 (a little more than 10 percent of pre-registered runners) opting for the Internet.

1999 A robust field of 11,307 participants enjoyed a successful Shamrock Shuffle. Runners at the 20th running of the Shamrock Shuffle were treated to partly cloudy skies, a light breeze and a race time temperature of 49 F. 30 Key moments in event history

1998 The Shamrock Shuffle, named one of the “Best 100 Races for 1998” by Runner’s World, hosted the 1998 USATF National Masters and 8K Championship. Defending Shuffle champion John Kariuki of Kenya hoped to become the first repeat champion, and only the second man to win the race more than once (Dan Skarda, 1982 and 1985, was the first), but was foiled by fellow Kenyan James Kariuki (no relation). James set a new course record in 22:35. Two-time Bank of America Chicago Marathon Champion Marian Sutton became the first non-American woman to win the Shamrock Shuffle, in a new event record 25:53. California’s Jeanne Lasee-Johnson smashes Darsie Bowman’s six-year-old women’s masters’ mark with a time of 28:25. The 19th annual race boasted record participation of more than 9,000 runners.

1997 LaSalle Bank becomes the title sponsor of the Shamrock Shuffle as a record 8,467 runners register for the 18th annual event, Walk and Kid’s Shuffle. A cold front arrives just before the start of the race, drops the temperature into the low 30s, and brings with it strong winds and snow flurries. Mother Nature can’t stop John Kariuki of Kenya and Colette Murphy of Indiana from setting new course records of 22:58 and 26:32, respectively. Other top racers include then-American marathon record-holder Jerry Lawson, Charles Mulinga, Eddy Hellebuyck, Leonid Shvetsov and masters champ . A record $6,400 prize money was awarded, plus event record bonuses.

1996 The Shamrock Shuffle invites elite athletes to participate in the race. In the past, notable runners and Shamrock Shuffle winners such as Jim Spivey, Mark Plaatjes, Michele Bush-Cuke, Colette Murphy, Rod DeHaven and Debra Gormley came to Chicago on their own to compete.

1993 For the first time, the Shamrock Shuffle offers prize money of $2,000 to top finishers. Scott Jenkins of Wisconsin and Colette Murphy of Indiana come to Chicago and claim victory in 24:00 and 27:18, respectively.

1992 The 13th annual Shamrock Shuffle begins with a big change – the addition of Sportmart as a title sponsor. With nearly 7,500 participants, the Shamrock Shuffle is recognized as the largest certified 8K race in the U.S. Illinoisan Darsie Bowden sets the female Masters (over 40) course record in 29:31.

1988 Carey Pinkowski, now the Executive Race Director for the Shamrock Shuffle and the Chicago Marathon, finishes third in the ninth annual Shamrock Shuffle at 24:07. Olympian Jim Spivey claimed the men’s championship in 23:50. Participants in the fifth annual Shamrock Shuffle are forced to brave very cold temperatures, with the wind chill hovering near minus 20. Jim Hanson of Illinois wins the men’s competition in 24:55 while Sarah Linsley, also of Illinois, becomes the women’s champion, tying the course record she set in 1982, at 27:41.
