Melbournewasrecentlynamedtheworld’smostliveablecityforthe5thyearinarowbyThe Economist.Weareparticularlyproudofourstronghistoryandpresentstrengthinmedicalresearch withboththeUniversityofMelbourneandMonashUniversityhavinghighly-rankedmedicalschools. WeareespeciallystronginimmunologywithgreatnamesofthepastsuchasBurnet,Nossal,Jacques Miller,IanMackay,PeterMorris,IanMcKenzieandmanyothersworkinghere,aswellasmanycurrent luminariesincludingofcoursePeterDohertyafterwhomamajorinstitutehasrecentlybeennamed. ThisisagreattimeoftheyeartovisitMelbourne.SpringisverymuchintheairandMelbourne’srather greyandwetwinterandobsessionwithAustralianRulesFootballisoverfortheyear.Springto MelburniansmeansnotonlyhayfeverbuttheSpringRacingCarnivalculminatingintheMelbourne Cup,whichwasheldtwoweeksago,andthecomingcricketseasoninwhichAustraliawillplayagainst touringteamsfromNewZealandandtheWestIndies.ThetraditionalBoxingDaytestwillbeonlyjust overwhentheAustralianOpentennischampionshipbegins.YoucanseeMelbourneissportsmadand thatiswhyourCongressDinnerwillbeheldattheMelbourneCricketGround–oneoftheworld’sgreat stadiumsandhomeofthe1956Olympicsaswellasregularfootballandcricketmatches–thisyear over98000peopleattendedthefootballGrandFinal. ButMelbourneisnotjustaboutsport–thereisarichmulticulturalsocietywithnearlytwocenturiesof diverseimmigrationresultingmostobviouslyinafantasticrangeofrestaurantsandlocalwines.Ihope youwilltaketheopportunitytoenjoythese–inmoderationofcourse.Therearealsomanygreen spaceswithinourlargecity–makesureyouleavetimeforawalkinourbeautifulRoyalBotanic Gardensthatremindusofourcolonialpast.Andusethetramnetwork,laidoutinthe19th Centurywhen MelbournewasoneoftherichestcitiesintheworldthankstoourGoldRush,togetaroundtown.It’s freeintheCBD.
