York St John University Access & Participation Plan 2019-20 Access & Participation Plan 2019-20 York St John University A history of widening access York St John University has been widening access to higher education since its founding as a Teacher Training College by the Church of England in 1841: “…as the most powerful means of remedying the existing defects in the Education both of the Poor and Middle Classes of Society, to establish a School for the purpose of Training Masters in the Art and Practice of Teaching.” This has underpinned our approach ever since, as can been seen in the development of our latest Strategic Plan. Assessment of current performance Our size and shape York St John University currently has 5,100 APP-countable students (paying Home/EU fees and studying on UG Degree, Foundation Degrees or PGCE courses). Figure 1 shows how this overall student population is broken down into the five underrepresented groups identified by the Office for Students (OfS) and the intersections between those groups: Figure 1 Understanding our student population in terms of underrepresented groups and their intersectionality (as at 1 February 2018) The largest of our underrepresented groups is the POLAR quintiles 1 and 2 metric. POLAR looks at how likely young people are to participate in Higher Education (HE). -

Exploring the relationship between sensorimotor integration and social processing in autism ESRC DTP Joint Studentship The University of Nottingham and Loughborough University The Midlands Graduate School is an accredited Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). One of 14 such partnerships in the UK, the Midlands Graduate School is a collaboration between the University of Warwick, Aston University, University of Birmingham, University of Leicester, Loughborough University and the University of Nottingham. We are now inviting applications for an ESRC Doctoral Joint Studentship between The University of Nottingham (where the student will be registered) and the Loughborough University to commence in October 2018. The Project This studentship will investigate links between specific sensorimotor integration deficits and social difficulties in autism with a view to developing sensory training paradigms using virtual reality that will have a meaningful impact on social functioning. Sensory abnormalities are a defining feature of autism and may account for a significant amount of social-communication difficulties. However, the current evidence base cannot inform us about how a particular sensory mechanism affects specific areas of social functioning; information vital to the development of appropriate interventions designed to improve both sensory and social function in autism. One theory to link these domains is atypical sensorimotor temporal binding in autism. Accurate sensorimotor binding underlies the awareness and understanding of our own body and researchers have argued that a failure to detect similarities between another’s movements and our own may impair social processing. Recent research has shown that sensorimotor temporal binding is malleable and therefore there is great potential in exploring sensory training as an intervention. -

The Centre for Integrated research into Musculoskeletal Ageing The Centre for Integrated research into Musculoskeletal Ageing www.cimauk.org Photograph by Lindsay Mackenzie (2nd Runner Up - Newcastle University Student Competition) The Centre for Integrated research into Musculoskeletal Ageing Introduction Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and age-related decline in function of musculoskeletal tissues (bones, joints, tendons and muscles) are major contributors to loss of independence and poor quality of life in older people. The Centre for Integrated research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA) is a collaboration between researchers and clinicians at the Universities of Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield that brings together complementary and outstanding expertise in skeletal muscle, bone, cartilage and tendon biology, ageing research, nutrition and exercise interventions and clinical excellence in musculoskeletal disorders. The Centre is developing an integrated approach to understanding the processes and effects of ageing in tissues of the musculoskeletal system, how ageing contributes to diseases of the musculoskeletal system and how these processes may be ameliorated or prevented. This Centre of Excellence brings together researchers from 3 leading UK Universities to build on current world-leading research to understand why our bones, joints and muscles function less well as we age and why older people develop clinical diseases of these musculoskeletal tissues, such as arthritis or osteoporosis. The Centre is investigating new ways of preventing the deterioration of the musculoskeletal tissues that occur as we age to help preserve mobility and independence in older people. CIMA was funded by an initial grant of £2.5M from the Medical Research Council and Arthritis Research UK commencing June 2012 together with substantial investment in new posts by the Universities of Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield. -

Herbarium News University of Reading Herbarium Newsletter Issue No. 45, December 2008. ISSN 0953-0080 URL: www.herbarium.reading.ac.uk INTRODUCTION Welcome to another Christmas Herbarium News. As with every edition we have much to report! During the last year a number of important things have happened, not least the refurbishment of two of our taxonomy laboratories (more details below). We have also changed the name of our building from ‘Plant Science Laboratories’ to ‘The Harborne Building’ to commemorate Jeffrey Harborne, FRS, our late lamented phytochemist. This is in line with University policy to name buildings after people, and the new biomolecular sciences building (behind Chemistry) for our medical and pharmacy researchers will be called the Hopkins Building, after the late Professor Harold Hopkins, sometime Professor in Physics here who developed fibre optics and the endoscope. The Herbarium has been especially busy having now completed the incorporation of the Herbarium from the University of Southampton, again see below. HERBARIUM REVIEW AND STRATEGY Our School of Biological Sciences recently undertook a review of the Herbarium, along with the Cole Museum of Zoology and a number of other issues. Ours was led by Professor Philip John with Professor Martin Bell (Archaeology), Kate Arnold-Foster (Head of the University’s Museums and Special Collections Service and Dr Karen Henderson (Head of Technical Services, Biological Sciences). They were very positive and have recommended that a Herbarium Strategy be drawn up for the next five years, currently in progress. Senate also positively noted the Herbarium’s growing level of engagement with the University and the likely increase in the commercial value of this resource. -
