Atlanta Braves Clippings Thursday, September 10, 2020 Braves.com Braves set NL standard with 29-run outburst Atlanta breaks Modern Era record in National League (since 1900) By Mark Bowman ATLANTA -- Adam Duvall produced his second three-homer game within an eight-day span to help the Braves roll to a record-setting 29-9 win over the Marlins on Wednesday night at Truist Park. Duvall became the first player to record two three-homer games while wearing a Braves uniform, and his efforts helped Atlanta set a National League record for runs in a game in the modern era (since 1900). “That was pretty amazing to be a part of,” Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said. “I’ve never seen an offense click like that.” The Braves fell just one run short of tying the modern record for runs scored in a game, set when the Rangers defeated the Orioles, 30-3, in the first game of a doubleheader on Aug. 22, 2007, at Camden Yards. Dating back to 1900, no NL club had scored more than 28 runs in a game. The Braves’ franchise record was 23, a mark tallied during the second game of a doubleheader against the Cubs on Sept. 2, 1957. Ronald Acuña Jr. contributed to his three-hit night with a three-run home run to cap a six-run fifth. But it was his bases-loaded double in the sixth inning that gave the Braves a new franchise record for runs in a single game, opening a 25-8 lead. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Atlanta became the first MLB team to score at least 22 runs through the first five innings since the Blue Jays (24 runs) in a win over the Orioles on June 26, 1978.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Monday, September 21, 2020 Braves.com Wright baffles Mets in 6 1/3-inning, 1-hit gem By Mark Bowman Ronald Acuña Jr. was bound to right himself before the postseason arrived. But the fact Kyle Wright has also started the regular season’s home stretch on a good note gives the Braves even more reason to be excited about what October might bring. Acuña’s solo homer provided all of the necessary support for Wright, who constructed a career-best start in the Braves’ 7-0 win over the Mets on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. The right-hander’s confidence has grown significantly as he’s used his past two starts to show he has the potential to lessen concerns about the postseason rotation. “He’s been tremendous,” said catcher Travis d’Arnaud, who hit a two-run double in the eighth inning. “His demeanor on the mound and his demeanor in between innings, he’s been carrying himself really well. He’s just been attacking guys.” The Braves’ magic number to clinch a third consecutive National League East title has been reduced to six with seven games remaining, four of which will be played against the second-place Marlins this week. Looking ahead to the postseason, the Braves’ rotation will likely include Max Fried, Ian Anderson, Cole Hamels and Wright, who had essentially been a candidate by default before he produced two of the strongest starts of his young career over the past eight days. Wright earned his first career win with six strong innings at Nationals Park last weekend.

These rankings are for fun and debate purposes only … if you don’t agree with the order, participate in the Twitter poll to vote for your favorite at this position. Here is Mark Bowman’s ranking of the top 5 center fielders in Braves history. Next week: Right fielders. 1. Andruw Jones, 1996-2007 Key fact: Stands with Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays and Ichiro Suzuki as the only outfielders to win 10 consecutive Gold Glove Awards The 60.9 bWAR (Baseball Reference’s WAR model) Andruw Jones produced during his 11 full seasons (1997-2007) with Atlanta ranked third in the Majors, trailing only Alex Rodriguez (85.7) and Barry Bonds (79.2). Chipper Jones was fourth at 58.9. Within this span, the Braves center fielder led all Major Leaguers with a 26.7 Defensive bWAR. Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez ranked second with 16.5. The next closest outfielder was Mike Cameron (9.6). Along with establishing himself as one of the greatest defensive outfielders baseball has ever seen during his time with Atlanta, Jones became one of the best power hitters in Braves history. He ranks fourth in franchise history with 368 homers, and he set the club’s single-season record with 51 homers in 2005.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Friday, September 18, 2020 Braves.com Cy Young poll: The 2020 favorites are ... By David Adler The two Cy Young Award races this year are completely different, but both are coming into focus as the 2020 season gets down to the wire. In the American League, Shane Bieber has dominated since Opening Day. The National League race has been much more wide open, but a trio of front-runners has emerged in Yu Darvish, Jacob deGrom and Trevor Bauer. Who deserves to be named each league's best pitcher? We put it up to the voters. MLB.com asked its reporters and analysts to fill out their 2020 NL and AL Cy Young Award ballots, following our MVP poll last week. There were 38 voters in total. Reporters were asked to rank their top five choices in each league, with five points awarded for a first-place vote, four for second, etc. Here are the MLB.com picks for the AL and NL Cy Young Award winners. AMERICAN LEAGUE 1) Shane Bieber, Indians (38 first-place votes, unanimous) It's no surprise that Bieber was the pick to win the AL Cy Young Award. Really, it's not even much of a surprise that he was the unanimous No. 1 choice. That's how good Bieber has been. The Indians ace isn't just the AL Cy Young favorite, he could get real AL MVP Award consideration. Bieber is in position to win a pitching Triple Crown, as he leads the Major Leagues with eight wins and 112 strikeouts and is second with a 1.74 ERA.
