There is a common notion that those who make it big, whether it be as a professional athlete, a Grammy award-winning artist, or as an A-list actor, forget where they came from. Fame and fortune go to their heads and they become completely different people than they once were prior to their fame. Though fictional, one could make the argument that Vincent Chase, the protagonist of H.B.O.'s critically acclaimed series Entourage, underwent this drastic shift as the show progressed. One way of analyzing this possible alteration is through the Discourses that Vince was exposed to as a youth growing up in New York and as an A-list actor in Hollywood. -

Meta-Television in Entourage, Extras and 30 Rock Introduction the Last Decade Has Seen a Number Of
PREVIOUSLY ON “Cut the Shitcom”: Meta-television in Entourage, Extras and 30 Rock Toni Pape Introduction The last decade has seen a number of fictional TV series about television and film production. These television shows – including the ones to be analysed here: Entourage, Extras, and 30 Rock – relocate the process of creative revitalization in front of the camera. Meta-television, as I understand it here, then is television about the media industry and, more particularly, about the production and quality of film and television itself.1 The three above-mentioned television programs present contemporary writers, actors, directors, etc. working on movies and television shows. Especially Extras and 30 Rock offer a critical overview of how television formats are produced, and they significantly do so in a period of time during which the working conditions for television-makers have fundamentally changed. In a most general sense, the criticism that these shows purport works on two levels. First, as we will see further on, there is an explicit criticism implied in the way the TV shows at hand present the making of a TV show. Thus, there is for instance Andy Millman, the protagonist of Extras about whom I will have more to say later on, who clearly states his dissatisfaction as a disillusioned actor/writer: ANDY: I wanna do something that I’m proud of. And I won’t be proud of shouting out catch phrases in a stupid wig and funny glasses. […] So basically, I’m not going to prostitute myself anymore or my work, ok? (Extras “Orlando Bloom”, 21’30”) In a very outspoken way, the programs in question take stock of television’s outworn creative standards and its resulting mediocrity. -
Memories of the Golden State
Issue 135 December 2016/January 2017 A NEWSLETTER OF THE ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY Memories of the Golden State O WEN C LARK Armed with a DSLR camera, travel guitar, two Haight and Ashbury-acquired shawl- cardigans, and three of my oldest friends, I left the perpetual fog of the San Francisco Bay. Having played out the scene a thousand times in my head, I had romanticized the drive down California’s scenic Pacific Coast Highway to levels approaching cliché. But despite trading the flashy convertibles of Entourage’s Vincent Chase or Californica- tion’s Hank Moody for a grey Hyundai So- nata rental car, it still failed to disappoint. /NATURAL SELECTIONS Practically every bend on that winding road greeted me with a stunning scene of pure, rugged beauty. California’s jagged cliffs are lined with earthy hues of bright red and orange, while each inlet of the vast Pacific OWEN CLARK Ocean contains a perfectly balanced array of turquoise and green pastels that one might have found on Winslow Homer’s palette. Entourage Director of Photography and Camera Operator Todd Dos Reis
Entourage Director of Photography and Camera Operator Todd Dos Reis Going behind the scenes of America’s most exciting television show By: Steve Mathie Staff Writer FilmingLocations.com Have you ever sat on your couch watching Entourage, wishing you could be part of Vince group of friends? Did you ever wonder what it’d be like to have cameras all around you and beautiful women to your left and right and some of the coolest homes, hotels and businesses around? Vincent Chase knows. Ari knows. Drama knows. Turtle and Eric live the dream. So does Todd Dos Reis. Only when you sit down on Sunday night to watch these guys take Hollywood and the rest of the globe by storm, you probably won’t know who Todd is when the episode is finished. Dos Reis is the Directory of Photography (DP) on Entourage, the HBO series in the first week of its 6th successful season. Jeremy Piven is the heartbeat of the show, and Adrien Grenier and Kevin Dillon make sure there’s never a dull moment. Then there is Dos Reis, who collaborates with the directors and producers to make sure that all of the shots you see make you feel like you are in the entourage itself. “I don’t know any other TV show like it,” says Dos Reis. “The fun we have working on it is amazing.” Dos Reis and the crew shoot an episode in 7 days, a pace that is as frenetic as the lifestyle of the main characters in the show. The cinematography of Entourage is Dos Reis’ forte, and as one of two DP’s on the show, 14 hour days are not all that uncommon. -

DANZIGERGALLERY Inge Morath – Masquerades & Enoc Perez – Cut Shapes May 7 – June 13, 2015 Danziger Gallery is pleased to present a two-person show of photographs by Inge Morath and photo collages by Enoc Perez. Created half a century apart, both works share a sense of humor, an interest in concealment, and a delight in cutting and making shapes out of paper. Inge Morath (1923 – 2002) and artist Saul Steinberg (1914 – 1999) engaged in a unique collaboration by having friends and acquaintances don his paper bags drawn with fantastic faces and then posing them for her photographs. In a delightful series of individual and group portraits taken from 1959 to 1963 the images convey both humor and an unnerving psychological depth. We may not know who is beneath each bag, but we seem to know the type they are playing. Between Morath's deadpan style and Steinberg's flights of fantasy they created a veritable encyclopedia of attitudes, postures, and mannerisms.! Inge Morath joined the photographic cooperative Magnum in Paris by invitation of Robert Capa in 1953 and was assistant to Henri Cartier-Bresson before becoming a full member. Her work was widely published in magazines, including Life, Paris Match, and Vogue, and in numerous books. Ms. Morath was married to Arthur Miller and they had one daughter, the film director Rebecca Miller. In 2015 the Bienecke Library at Yale acquired the bulk of the Inge Morath Estate. DANZIGER GALLERY 521 W. 23rd ST. NEW YORK CITY NY 10011 Enoc Perez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1967. He currently lives and works in New York. -
