Weldon Our life, our sweetness and our hope There are many feast days of the Blessed Virgin Mary during the liturgical year. In September we celebrate three: the Birth of Mary, the Holy Name of Mary, and the Sorrowful Mother. A mother’s mystery is always a mystery of affective intimacy that in a way is almost impossible to put in writing; it is a mystery that can be lived and communicated only in and through love. It is so good and so human. The child is so present yet so beyond us as the mystery of life. St. Alphonsus Liguori writes “She came into the world full of grace, not only for her own glory, but also for our good.” St Bernard tells us “God established Mary as the channel of the mercies that He wished to dispense to men.” Mary is the portal of grace, because Jesus the grace of God, the gift to us, comes to us through her. When we celebrate the birth of Mary, we celebrate the infant child, who says yes! The birth of Mary and her living “Yes” at Nazareth make for the bridge that carries forward the reality of the incarnation to humanity. At the meeting with Elizabeth, Mary rejoices with praise for God. The “yes” of Mary at Nazareth goes to the foot of the cross as she is “The Mother of Sorrows.” She enters into every aspect of the life of her Son. This is why we celebrate her sorrows on the day after the Exaltation of the Cross. She shares in the joys and sufferings of Jesus in a profound way. The profound mystery of the life and death of her Son unfolds before her eyes. She is confident in who He is, and she believed that the rejection of which He spoke would happen. She humbly and obediently accepted His words and mission with undying hope. This hope is present at the foot of the cross. The child she received at the words of the angel has now made all things new. Mary participates in this proclamation of the kingdom as she shares in a unique way the paschal mystery of her son. We are called to imitate the faith of Mary first, but then further to act upon that faith. By believing, we then possess something to share. By sharing what we believe, and most importantly by acting in a faith-filled manner in charity and humility, we then again imitate Mary and give powerful witness to Christ. This is the greatest evangelization we can do. This is the witness to hope Mary brings to the cross and which we carry with us to share with those who need Christ. - Fr. Weldon The Foxhole with Father Kapaun In the darkness of a North Korean Prisoner of War camp, Servant of God Emil Kapaun made it his mission to unite his men in hope. The Foxhole with Father Kapaun is a podcast that carries on the heroic priest’s legacy of encouragement by connecting you with ordinary people who are fighting on the front lines of faith, often in extraordinary ways. Produced by our local Kapaun’s Men team, The Foxhole features guests like Catholic speakers Chris Stefanick and Michelle Benzinger, military veterans like Vice Admiral Jim Crawford and Medal of Honor Recipient Pat Brady (releasing Sept. 11), as well as ordinary men and women whose insight is sure to offer you inspiration and strength for the daily battle.
