Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time THE SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 26, 2019 The St. Ann “APP”: Associate Pastor’s Perspective - Since January, I have been attempting to evangelize by sharing on social media and radio the stories of saints-to-be who are our contemporaries – men and women who have lived during the past one hundred years (or so) and are now being considered for canonization by the Catholic Church. Of course, there are countless priests and nuns on the list of holy witnesses, but there are many “ordinary” men and women who went to work, married, struggled with the crosses of daily life and did their best to remain faithful to Christ and His Church. This Memorial Day weekend, when we pause as a nation to remember the ultimate sacrifice made by our own citizens in service to their country, I can’t help but remember two “saints-to-be” who gave their lives on the battlefield while ministering to others. Both ‘Venerable’ Emil Kapaun (World War II) and ‘Servant of God’ Vincent Capodanno (Vietnam) were priests who were killed in battle while courageously serving the young soldiers who risked all in fulfilling their commitment to the military and nation. The only weapons these chaplains carried onto these battlefields were prayer and the compassion of Christ, and yet Kapaun and Capodanno never backed- down from bringing God even to places where most would rather not go. May these two future American saints intercede for all who still serve in our Armed Forces, and may we continue to pray that the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard our minds and hearts, both at home and abroad. Creating mural 'was so magical' pends years painting tribute to Kapaun BY ROY WENZL The Wichita Eagle THE UNVEILING What: Mass and unveiling of artist Wendy Lewis' 12foot mural of the Rev. Emil Kapaun, a priest of the Wichita Diocese and a Korean War hero whom the Vatican is considering for sainthood. Bishop Michael Jackels will celebrate the Mass. Where: St. John's Chapel, Sacred Heart Hall, Newman University, 3100 McCormick When: Wednesday. Mass begins at 5 p.m.; the unveiling will be at 6 p.m. A reception will follow at the Newman University campus center. How much: The event is free and open to the public. VIDEO As Wendy Lewis painted a face on a mural in the chapel at Newman University a few weeks ago, something strange and wonderful happened, she said. The eight other faces in the mural — the face of potential saint Father Emil Kapaun, for example — took her many layers of paint over many days to complete, she said. "You can see how I labored when you see his face," she said. But the ninth face — the face of Jesus — took only two layers and five hours. It has colors in it that she says she will never be able to replicate. It took almost no time at all. It's the best face she's ever painted, she said. "I kept turning around and wanting to see if anybody else was watching this happen," she said. "It was so magical." The public will get to see those faces in her mural at an unveiling at 6 p.m.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER WWW.STJOHNTRYON.COM SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION THE COMMANDMENT OF LOVE If you don’t have love for one another, then how can you love Christ? How can they see Jesus in you? That’s why we need a clean heart, to see Jesus. Love one another. That’s all Jesus came to teach us. The whole Gospel is very, very simple. Do you love me? Obey my commandments. He’s turning and twisting just to get around to one thing: love one another. He wants us to be really, really loving…. Intense love does not measure; it just gives. To be an apostle of the Sacred Heart, one must be burning with love, intense love for your neighbor…. These words of Jesus, Love one another, even as I have loved you, should be not only a light to us, but they should also be a flame consuming the selfishness which prevents the growth of holiness. Jesus loved us to the end, to the very limit of love: the cross. This love must come from within, from our union with Christ. It must be an outpouring of our love for God, in one family, a family with the common Father, who is in heaven. Loving must be as normal to us as living and breathing, day after day until our death. Saint Teresa of Calcutta Saint Teresa of Calcutta (+ 1997) founded the Missionaries of Charity and won the Nobel Peace Prize. May Magnificat 2019 At the conclusion of their missionary journey, Paul and Barnabas tell the Antioch community all that the Lord had accomplished in their preaching the kingdom of God.

  • Vatican Finds Enough Evidence to Continue Probe Into Miracle' Comments (0) Recommend (0) by ROY WENZL
Vatican finds enough evidence to continue probe into miracle' Comments (0) Recommend (0) By ROY WENZL McClatchy Newspapers WICHITA, Kan. The Vatican found enough evidence of a miracle in the survival of Chase Kear of Colwich, Kan., that it intends to keep studying his survival, with an eye toward declaring it an official miracle, church officials say. Declaring it a miracle would help determine whether Father Emil Kapaun of Pilsen, Kan., will be canonized as a saint of the Catholic Church. Andrea Ambrosi, a lawyer and investigator for the Vatican, visited family members and doctors for two Wichitaarea families on Friday who believe the survival of their children during nearly lethal medical crises recently should qualify as miracles. One of them involved Kear, a 20yearold athlete severely injured in October. The Rev. John Hotze, judicial vicar for the Wichita diocese, is not allowed to say who or what families are being investigated for miracles. But he said there was one other "alleged miracle" in the Wichita area that Ambrosi studied during his time here. With both families, Hotze said, Ambrosi met with the doctors involved and studied medical reports and X rays. "Afterward, the Vatican investigator said that in years of investigating miracles, he had never seen doctors who made such a compelling case for miracles occurring," Hotze said. Ambrosi came as a skeptical questioner to determine whether thousands of prayers made to Kapaun by Kear's family and friends might have created a miracle. He met with Chase Kear at the family's home in Colwich.

  • VATICAN TAKES 1St STEP to FR. KAPAUN SAINTHOOD WICHITA, KAN
The Carillon FATHER EMIL J. KAPAUN COUNCIL 10022 August 2016 CHARITY-UNITY-FRATERNITY-PATRIOTISM Fr. Kapaun showed pipe shot out of his mouth during action in Korea. VATICAN TAKES 1st STEP TO FR. KAPAUN SAINTHOOD WICHITA, KAN. — The sainthood cause of Father Emil Kapaun, a priest of the Wichita Diocese who was a military chaplain during the Korean War and died in a prison camp, is one step closer to consideration by the pope. Father Kapaun, of course, is the patron of our own Council #10022 here in Leisure Knoll. SIX HISTORICAL consultants of the Vatican Congregation for Saints' Causes met in Rome recently and approved the historical documents submitted by the Diocese of Wichita on behalf of Father Kapaun's cause. The documents were originally presented to the congregation as part of the "positio," or position paper. The Vatican's consultants approved the documentation June 21 after evaluating it for completeness and accuracy. The "positio" is the official document that will be used to determine if Father Kapaun lived a life of heroic virtue and sanctity. If such a determination is made, the priest will be declared "venerable," the first of three major steps for sainthood. The second step is beatification and the third step is canonization. In general, each of these steps requires the church to accept evidence that a miracle has occurred through the intercession of the sainthood candidate. LAST NOVEMBER at the Vatican, Wichita Bishop Carl A. Kemme formally delivered the 1,066-page report on the life of Father Kapaun to Angelo Cardinal Amato, prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes.

The Little White Book Six-minute reflections on the Sunday Gospels of Easter (Year A) This book is dedicated to Bishop Ken Untener (1937-2004) who was inspired to create the Little Books. His life and faith continue to be their driving force. This Easter booklet is based on the writings of Bishop Ken Untener, and put together by Catherine Haven, editor of the Little Books, with the help of Sr. Nancy Ayotte, IHM, who works with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Distribution is under the direction of Leona Jones. ® 2019 Diocese of Saginaw. For additional books, contact: Little Books of the Diocese of Saginaw, Inc. P.O. Box 6009, Saginaw, MI 48608-6009 (989) 797-6653 FAX (989) 797-6606 or visit our web site at www.littlebooks.org How to Use the Little White Book This Little White Book is meant to help you enjoy six minutes a day in prayer during these next 50 days of the Easter season. The key is the right-hand page. On that page each day (except Sundays), we’ll walk through the Sunday Gospels of Cycle A (this year’s liturgical cycle). The left-hand page is like a buffet table with informa- tion about the Easter season, or various traditions and cus- toms, or the saint whose feast is celebrated on that particular day. This year, on Sundays and periodically throughout the week, we’ll focus on the 12 apostles. Start with either page, as you wish. The main thing is to spend some quiet time with the Lord using one of our oldest traditions of prayer called lectio divina – sacred reading.
