HEADPHONES AVAILABLE FOR THE HARD OF HEARING. 2 | Holy Angels Church • Basehor, KS PLEASE ASK AN USHER OR GREETER. If you were one of those fortunate enough to have been a part of the group from Holy Angels that on a recent Saturday afternoon went on a pilgrimage to celebrate, honor, and beg intercession of Fr. Kapaun, the Wichita Diocesan priest who is considered a holy of the , then I know you must be edified by his holy and unwavering example. “On morning, March 25, 1951, the Catholic priest mounted the steps of a partially destroyed church, and turned to face his congregation, some 60 men – gaunt, foul-smelling, in tattered clothing. “Fr. Emil Kapaun raised a small, homemade, wooden cross to begin a prayer service, led the men in the Rosary, heard the confessions of the Catholics, and performed a Baptism. Then, he wept because there was no bread or wine to consecrate so that the men could receive the . “The U.S. Army chaplain, with a patch covering his injured eye and supported by a crudely-made cane, may have been broken in body, but was strong in spirit. “The following Sunday, Fr. Kapaun collapsed. His condition was serious – a blood clot, severe vein inflam- mation, malnutrition – but the Chinese guards in the North Korean prison camp would allow no medical treatment, not even painkillers. After languishing for several weeks, he died on May 23 and was buried in a mass grave.” https://www.tfpstudentaction.org/blog/fr-emil-kapaun-the-good-thief My friends, if Fr. Kapaun can remain faithful to Our Lord Jesus Christ through imprisonment and torture, how much more so should we be inclined to practice our Faith? If he wept because he was unable to provide his flock of soldiers the Most Holy Eucharist because of the lack of bread and wine, then how much more so should we be grateful for the ability to receive Our Lord in Holy Communion each and every day without threats and violence and also to be able, at any hour of every day to kneel down in worship of Our Lord and King in His Most Blessed Sacrament in Our Lady, Queen of the Holy Angels Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel? For the many who were able to take advantage of the gift of our hosting the International Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima on the Assumption Holy Day of Obligation by visiting our church and praying to the Blessed Mother, it was an especially blessed feast day. It reminds us of how important it is to be able to reach out to others outside our own parish for various events and actions—to the many who came in celebration of “Mary’s Day” they were most grateful and it was shown by substantial contribution to our adoration chapel fund. Our Lady, Queen of the Holy Angels Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel also seeks to be an outreach to those beyond our parish, to all those who seek peace for themselves and peace for the world and healing, for those who seek a haven of quiet and prayerfulness in the swirling madness of our ever-hurrying lives and society: it seeks to be a haven of comfort, consolation and intimacy with God for those who have no other place to pray, to help them with their spiritual lives. It is meant to enfold our souls in intimate communion with God, to wrap our hearts nearer to the Sacred Heart, to be a little bit of heaven on this most unheavenly earth. I ask you to pray that the resources we need to finish the adoration chapel will be forthcoming in the days and weeks ahead as we prepare for consecration of its altar on the 101st anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun promised by the Blessed Virgin as Our Lady of Fatima and the Mass of Dedication and subsequent celebrations with The Elders, a Celtic rock band on its farewell tour, afterwards throughout the evening and into the night on Sat., Oct. 13. We pray that the coming together of so many for the celebration may be a time of renewal of faith, of dedication and of devotion to Our Lord, Our Lady, and all the people of the Church of God. Fr. Emil Kapaun, pray for us! Our Lady, Queen of the Holy Angels, pray for us!
