MICHAEL YEZERSKI Composer Michael Yezerski’s musical works are highly evocative, original and diverse. Byron Shire Mayor Jan Barham said the draft plan details the services and programs to be delivered by Council along with an overview of capital works planned for 2010/11. ‘It’s a challenging budget for this upcoming financial year,’ she said in a press release. ‘The recently an- nounced rate pegging of 2.6 per cent by the NSW government makes it impossible to maintain the level of service expected by our residents and ratepayers. ‘A 2.6 per cent cap does not cover the real costs that Council experi- ences and doesn’t allow for increases in electricity, wages and equipment. Unfortunately, the continual cost shifting from the state government to local councils will mean a special rate application for Council for the upcoming financial year.’ Council is seeking a 6.98% special rate increase for 2010/11. An Australian Broadcasting Corporation edition of its flagship investigative reporting program, Four Corners, was on the verge of exposing the ingrained and festering culture of sexual predatory behaviour among rugby league players. The NRL was accustomed to this kind of attack after years of dealing with a long line of similar exposés, but this was to become the program that brought the problem to an audience wider than just the NRL faithful. Rugby league legend Phil Gould on Channel 9’s The Footy Show labelled this “a sledgehammer blow to the NRL” (The Footy Show). One of rugby league’s most highly regarded ex-players and then co-host of The Footy Show was Matthew Johns.

Photos courtesy of www. photosport. co. nz The Grand Final Produced One Of The Most Super Matches Of Them All By John Deaker HERE WAS huge anticipation building up to Saturday night’s Super rugby final between the Hurricanes Tand the Highlanders and unlike many big games in a lot of sports the match more than lived up to the great expectations people had for it. Individuals and teams sometimes tense up on the big stage or are coached into changing their game plan come finals time. Thankfully for those of us lucky enough to watch Saturday night’s match both teams came to the big stage prepared to back the dynamic and expansive styles of play that had got them there. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes they weren’t as accurate with their execution as they had been for most of the season. The Highlanders also deserve credit for being prepared to meet fire with fire and put the Hurri- canes off their game. Two sporting clichés that were epitomized on Saturday night by Elliott Dixon’s crucial try for the Highland- ers just before halftime are: ‘You make your own luck’ and ‘Sport is a game of inches’. Dixon’s negative body language told the story that the replays also revealed to most viewers at home with big, HD screens – he’d done brilliantly to get to the line but he failed to ground the ball correctly.
