Lockdown Update – unlike during previous lockdowns, the Welsh Government, recognising the importance of spiritual health, is allowing Places of Worship to remain open. Our church will continue to offer weekly Sunday worship at 10.45am and opportunities for Private Prayer each Wednesday, 10 until 12 and 2 until 4, but other midweek activities which had resumed are currently suspended. 2. Morning Worship for January – Sunday 3rd is Covenant Sunday, and our service will be led by Revd Marian. On 10th morning worship will be led by Terry Jobling, assisted by Derek; on 17th by John Harbron, and on 24th by Revd Jacquie (and this service will include Holy Communion). On 31st, being the 5th Sunday in the month, we shall join the congregation at St Mary’s church at 11am. Home Worship Sheets will continue to be produced for those unable to worship with us. 3. Happy Birthday to John Gordon who will be 92 on 2nd January and to Allan Everard (ex Welshpool, now Borth) who will be 96 on 9th January.     St John’s College Chapel Epiphany Carol Service Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 January 2020 Please turn the page quietly EPIPHANY In the Western churches, the Epiphany (‘manifestation’) became an occasion to celebrate one element in the story of Christ’s birth, the visit of the far- travelled magi, understood as the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. Matthew’s account speaks simply of ‘wise men from the east’; later tradition fixed their number at three, made them kings and recalled their resonant names – Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. In this perspective, Epiphanytide is an apt season to pray for the worldwide mission of the Church. The feast of the Conversion of St Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, appropriately falls in the Epiphany season, as does the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. In the Eastern churches, the Epiphany is, rather, the celebration of Christ’s baptism at the hands of John, when the heavens were opened and a voice from heaven declared Jesus to be God’s beloved Son. In John’s Gospel, the miracle of Cana in Galilee, where Jesus ‘first manifested his glory’, follows immediately. The season of joyful celebration that begins at Christmas now continues through the successive Sundays of Epiphany, and the festal cycle ends only with the Feast of the Presentation (Candlemas). The child who has been manifested to the magi at his birth is now recognized by Simeon and Anna, when he comes to be presented in the Temple according to the Law of Israel. He is both ‘a light to lighten the Gentiles’ and ‘the glory of God’s people Israel’.

Augustine of Hippo (354-430) Distinctive Traditions of Reflection Epiphany The feast of Epiphany on January 6 begins a season— extending in (Christmas and Epiphany, some church traditions for several weeks to the beginning of Lent— pp. 69-74) in which we celebrate God’s manifestation in Christ Jesus. When Epiphany began in the third century, it highlighted Christ’s baptism; by the next century, it also marked his manifestation to Gentiles in the persons of the Magi; later it included his self-revelation by creating new wine for the wedding at Cana.
