DEAR FRIENDS OF THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, Thank you for being a “superhero in action.” Your generosity, caring, volunteerism, and your desire to make a difference have positively impacted thousands of citizens in Frederick County. Countless residents have received critical services in the areas of housing, health care, or youth. Hundreds more have enjoyed the arts, experienced Frederick County history, and received post- secondary education. Seniors are receiving services necessary for their well-being, environmental conservation is gaining momentum, and animals have caring people aiding them. Agriculture, a mainstay of Frederick County, is being taught, preserved, and promoted. All this is happening because you choose to use your superhero “powers” to help bring quality of life to those around you. Superheroes are everywhere in our community. Nonprofits and their staff, city and county organizations, civic groups, and faith-based organizations are superheroes as they carry out programs and provide services, along with the volunteers who dedicate many hours to these entities. Superhero acts can be as small as a series of lessons that allows a youth to experience the joy of music, to as large as locating permanent housing for a family which provides stability and gives them hope. Every superhero action, no matter its size, contributes towards the success of every person in Frederick County. The well-being of Frederick County and its residents is evidenced by the grants list beginning on page 27, and the scholarship list beginning on page 41. Our superheroes, in FY2014, created a total of $2.5 million in grants, and $520,000 in post-secondary scholarships and vocational training. Like our comic book superhero friends who can leap tall buildings in a single bound, the variety of grants is astounding. Equally as impressive are the scholarships and the number of students pursuing higher education in an effort to become superheroes themselves someday by giving back to the community. As you read the quotes from some of our scholars, we are sure you will be inspired by their dedication and appreciation. The Community Foundation is blessed with extraordinary superheroes, and we are grateful for the hero in every donor who places their trust in us to carry out their charitable dreams and goals. Tregoning, P.C. 28th Annual Report Pichon, LLP 5 FY2014 TO THE COMMUNITY STRATEGIC GRANTSMAKING, YEAR THREE “Superheroes in Action” is an apt description of the Community Foundation’s strategic grant initiatives. There are a multitude of superheroes throughout the nonprofits providing services to those who need assistance and a helping hand when times are tough. These superheroes help people obtain treatment for chronic illnesses, and guide them through a maze of resources that is often difficult to navigate alone. Superheroes find temporary and permanent housing for people who need it, and support services to help get them back on their feet. Another group of superheroes pay heroic attention to children who are in their critical formative years of emotional, social, and cognitive development. Every child who enters kindergarten “ready-to-learn” increases their chance of becoming a successful adult by huge leaps and bounds. The Community Foundation’s long-term commitment in August 2011 to support the areas of accessible and affordable health care, housing, with emphasis on those who are precariously housed and newly homeless, and school-readiness for children birth through age 5, is halfway through year three (FY2013–2014) and will be entering its fourth year with its FY2014–2015 strategic grants. This report is based on FY2013–2014 mid-year reports received from grantees in June 2014. These grantees will use their funding by December 31, 2014. The funding for strategic grants is made possible by the superheroes who have so generously contributed to various funds supporting these areas. Funding for year three increased by 9.3 percent, from $219,000 to $239,308. Progress is being made in all areas, thanks to the extraordinary powers of all the superheroes that play a role. Great need still exists that will challenge even the most powerful of superheroes, but perseverance and persistence will allow progress to be achieved. The Community Foundation applauds the outstanding efforts of the strategic grantees who are working daily to improve lives in Frederick County. THE FREDERICK COUNTY HUMAN NEEDS ASSESSMENT /// released in August 2011, with the Board of Trustees identifying The Community Foundation’s strategic grant journey began three strategic areas of focus within the health, children and youth, in 2009, when one of the Board of Trustee’s three-year strategic and basic human needs: affordable and accessible health care, planning initiatives was to conduct a community-wide human needs ensuring children are “ready-for-school” at age 5, and housing, assessment, with this information to be used to create measurable, with emphasis on the newly homeless and precariously housed. positive community impact through its grantsmaking program.
