    Ecotourism in southwest Messinia, Greece - Visitation sites around Navarino bay Helena Berglund Helena Berglund Abstract Ecotourism has become popular during the most recent decades since its first introduction in the 1960’s by Hetzer. There have subsequently appeared several definitions of the term, but most seem to agree on the point that it should benefit the environment and its belonging ecosystems, habitats and species, and simultaneously promote the well-being of the local people and their economy. The coasts of the Mediterranean Sea attracts millions of tourists each year and this generally produces negative consequences in the shape of soil erosion, habitat destruction, scattering of litter, stressing of endangered species and a higher vulnerability to forest fires. Ecotourism has been developed as an alternative approach to tourism to ensure the sustainability of the environment in cooperation with tourism. The area around Navarino Bay in south-western Messinia, Greece, has numerous nature locations that tourists visit. Ten of the locations were examined by observational field work, interviews and literature to investigate if they are ecotourism attractions and what possible conflicts there are between tourism and nature conservation interests. The examination showed that there are conflicts and the more notable ones are on Divari beach where the only European population of African chameleon (Chamaeleo africanus) lives and on Romanos beach where a population of the endangered loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nests. The Ottoman-Russian joint naval expedition (1798-1800) to the Ionian Islands under the French occupation provides the framework for an examination of the Ottoman willingness to join the European system of alliance in the Napoleonic age which brought the victory against France in the Levant in the War of Second Coalition (1798-1802). Collections of the Ottoman Archives and Topkapı Palace Archives in Istanbul as well as various chronicles and treatises in Turkish supply most of the primary sources for this dissertation. Appendices, charts and maps are provided to make the findings on the expedition, finance and logistics more readable. The body of the dissertation is divided into nine chapters discussing in order the global setting and domestic situation prior to the forming of the second coalition, the Adriatic expedition, its financial and logistical aspects with the ensuing socio-economic problems in the Morea, the Sublime Porte’s relations with its protectorate – The Republic of Seven United Islands, and finally the post-war diplomacy.

We were so disappointed that so many of you were unable to travel with us in 2020. Our greatest pleasure is to share the destinations we have grown to love so deeply with you our wonderful guests. I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with many of you personally during the 2020 season. I was warmed and touched by your support, your understanding, your patience, and your generosity. Three major surges of sediment formed a series of barrier-island chains. The sites of Kleidhi (ancient Arene), along a former strategic pass by the sea, and Epitalion (Ho- meric Thryon), built on a headland at the mouth of the Alpheios River, now lie 1 and 5 km inland, respectively, and other ancient sites have been similarly affected. Diversion of the Peneus River has led to cycles of delta progradation and retrogradation that have both buried and eroded archaeological sites. Coastal changes continue in Elis today, resulting in areas of both erosion and deposition. INTRODUCTION Three great sandy strandlines extend for more than 100 km along the coast of Elis in the western Peloponnese, Kiparissia to Katakolon, to Chle- moutsi, to Araxos (Fig. 1). Fed by sediments eroding from the uplands of Elis via the deltas of the Peneus, Alpheios, and Nedon rivers and numer- ous smaller streams, littoral processes have created a sequence of lagoons, marshes, barrier accretion plains, coastal dune fields, swamps, and deltas.

The Venetians encouragedmigration to the cities in an attempt to create an urban society that would support their administra- tion. They failedto achievethis aim, as this studyofVenetian Navarinoshows, not only for lack of an urbantradition, but also because their policies for land distributionand taxation did not providepolitical or economic incentives for moving to the city. As a result, the settlement pattern in the Peloponnese remained remarkablystable throughout the Venetian occupation. Chapter Four The Stone-Built Palaiomaniatika of the Mani Peninsula, Greece Rebecca M. Seifried The Mani peninsula, the southernmost projection of the Peloponnese in Greece, is the location of over 170 settlements with preserved stone-built architecture from the premodern era (Figure 1). These remarkable places are known locally as palaiomaniatika (old Maniat settlements) or palaio- chores (old villages). The settlements are small, comprising between 10 and 50 houses, and they were built and occupied by local residents of the Mani peninsula. The vernacular architecture of the houses is relatively ho- mogenous, constituting the typical one- or two-story rectangular layout (i.e. the “longhouse”) that is common throughout rural landscapes in the Peloponnese (Sigalos 2004a, 2004b:66; Stedman 1996:185–186). Roughly half of the settlements are still inhabited today, with the same houses that were built centuries ago serving as the foundations for modern homes and newer buildings constructed in the spaces between to form the nucleated settlement layout that is typical of modern Greek villages.
