Digraphs in Sava Mrkalj's Writing System
Digraphs in Sava Mrkalj’s Writing System Shuko Nishihara Abstract Sava Mrkalj is known for his role in the reformation of the writing sys- tem of the Serbian literary language, as he proposed the new Cyrillic writing system in his work Salo debeloga jera libo azbukoprotres [Fat of the Thick Jer, or Alphabet Reshuffling](henceforth, Fat of the Thick Jer) (1810). Compared to the system established by Vuk Karadžić, Mrkalj’s writing system is imperfect and transitional, because its alphabet system retains four digraphs (дь, ль, нь, and ть) against the phonemic principle of his reform. This article discusses how Mrkalj’s alphabet system main- tains consistency, reflecting his order of priority. Keywords: Serbian language, Cyrillic letters, Sava Mrkalj, language standardization, orthographic reform. 1. Introduction Modern standard Serbian orthography is based on the principle of one sound corresponding to one letter, and although exceptions exist, the language may be “read as it is written,” to use the words of Johann Christoph Adelung.1 Nineteenth-century Serbian linguist, folklorist, and 1 Johann Christoph Adelung (1732–1806), German grammarian and philolo- gist. This article will show how Mrkalj’s writing system, put forth in Fat of the Thick Jer (1810), was linked to Karadžić’s orthography. -

Slovenian Alps
SLOVENIAN ALPS Mangart, Photo by Bor Rojnik Slovenian Alps are truly remarkable, easily discovered by road as well as by trails suitable for hikers and cyclists. Marvellous panoramas, blooming meadows, alpine pastures and forests are surely never to be forgotten and are one of the most fascinating tourist spots in Slovenia. The high summits of the Julian Alps, the Karavanken chain and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, open up amazing panoramas of the surrounding territory. It is hardly to find such a blooming meadows, alpine pastures and forests, elsewhere in the world within easy reach. The Julian Alps are a mountain range of the great Alps that stretches from northeastern Italy to Slovenia. They cover an estimated 4400 km², of which 1542 km² lies in Slovenia, and rise to 2,864 m at Mount Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia. The entire mountain range constitutes about 150 mountains and is divided into two sections - the Western Julian Alps and the Eastern Julian Alps. 1 The Triglav National Park, boasting a number of peculiarities, is the largest and the earliest protected natural heritage site in the country. It is located in the north-west of Slovenia, more precisely in the Julian Alps. The park was named after the highest mountain of Slovenia, the Triglav, which is located nearly at the center of the park. It is the only National Park in Slovenia and among the earliest European parks. Pokljuka, is the southernmost highland marsh in Europe and a natural habitat of sphagnum moss. Near Kranjska Gora you can find nature reserve, the Zelenci, whom lakes provide Sava Dolinka with its source. -

Prihvaćeno: 05.01.2014. This paper examines the memory practices of the memorial complex at Mrakovica at the Kozara National Park in the Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The original concept of the memorial site, founded in 1972, was to keep the Kozara-epos alive. The erected monument, the memorial wall and the museum were built to remember one of the biggest battles during the Second World War on Yugoslav soil during which more than ten thousand Partisan fighters and civilians lost their lives. During the communist era the memorial site fit into the official memory frame: the high number of casualties, especially civilians, was put into the foreground and the Partisans in their struggle for liberation were glorified. The key component of the official narrative was the slogan brotherhood and unity. After the armed conflict in the 1990s, the site underwent several transformations. New memorial frames were set by nationalists; thus history and memory were thereby de- and reconstructed. The new narrative included not only victims of the Second World War but exclusively those victims belonging to the ethnic group of Serbs of the First World War and the conflict in 1992-95. -

Uvod ALLIUM metafazni test je test za ugotavljanje splošne celične strupenosti (citotoksičnosti) in ravni genotoksičnosti v vodnih, kopenskih in zračnih ekosistemih, kjer dokazujemo potencialne genotoksične snovi. Test je kratkotrajen in pokaže usklajen in celokupen učinek onesnaževanja in medsebojno delovanje med testno rastlino (Allium cepa L.) in potencialnimi genotoksiki, nato se še rezultati statistično ovrednotijo. Rezultate raziskav s statistično kalkulacijo prikazuje Fisher’s Exact Test. V 2x2 frekvenčnih tabelah dvosmerna p-vrednost determinira statistično značilnost ali neznačilnost dveh kategoričnih vzorcev. Biološki test ALLIUM ali čebulni test razkriva celosten vpliv na rast in razvoj živih celic ali organizmov ter zaznava prisotnost škodljivih snovi v koncentracijah, ki so bistveno nižje od 1 ppb (part per billion – en del snovi na eno milijardo raztopine ali 1 µg na liter ali kilogram). Od približno 700 prepoznavnih snovi, ki se lahko znajdejo na primer v pitni vodi, jih z običajnimi fizikalno-kemijskimi analizami nadzorujemo le okrog 10 odstotkov (Vir: EU Chemical Bureau, Natural Resources Defence Council: Think before you drink). -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The bio-chemical and physical characteristics of a river are directly affected by water temperature, which therefore affects the overall health of aquatic ecosystems. In this study, long term variations of river water temperatures (RWT) in Kupa River watershed, Croatia were investigated. It is shown that the RWT in the studied river stations in- creased about 0.0232–0.0796ºC per year, which are comparable with long term observations reported for rivers in other regions, indicating an apparent warming trend. RWT rises during the past 20 years have not been constant for different periods of the year, and the contrasts between stations regarding RWT increases vary seasonally. Additionally, multi- layer perceptron neural network models (MLPNN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS) models were implemented to simulate daily RWT, using air temperature (Ta), flow discharge (Q) and the day of year (DOY) as predic- tors.
