Thirty-degree temperatures did not stop a group of local pilgrims from walking from a church in Legal to St. Jean Baptiste “On Saturday a handful of us pilgrimages were on the road in the best at 30 de- grees,” said organizer Pierre Rousseau, adding they left Legal at 8:15 and were wel- comed along the way by Florence Quagebheur who offered the pilgrims a rest place and access to her house. Rousseau said he and his family often walked a popular pilgrimage from City to Ste-Anne Basilica. “There is something very special about walking,” he said “It takes time and is an invitation to withdraw from the continuous distraction and solicitations of our daily lives.” Rousseau also wants the pilgrimage to be linked to St. Jean Baptiste Day, a very popular French-Canadian Festival on June 24. Rousseau and 14 pilgrimages did the first walk last year on 28 June and he hoped then this would be an annual event the first Saturday after Ste. Jean Baptiste Day. The departure point could vary but the St.-Jean Baptiste Church would remain the Pierre Rousseauand his fellow pilgrims pose for a photo on the steps of final destination. Museum gets higher profile

The old St. Jean Baptiste Park sign was removed a couple weeks ago and replaced June 20 with a 9 foot by 7 foot metal Musée Morinville Museum sign manufactured by Craig’s Welding. Town of Morinville employees assisted Craig’s Welding with the early morning installation. The sign was part of the museum’s hope to raise its profile in the community. Although existing in the convent building for several years, many residents and visitors were unaware of the museum’s existance. In addition to the new museum sign, a blue travel sign has been placed on the light post in front of St. Jean Baptiste Park to let people know where the historical facility is located.

As in previous years, groups of volunteers blanketed Morinville overnight with miniature Canadian flags at the end of driveways. Last Wednesday’s park activities included a hot dog lunch, cake and ice cream, live entertainment, and the welcoming open doors of the Mornville Museum, who put on a display of Canada’s past flags. The annual event is organized by the Morinville Historical and Cultural Society. The day concluded with a fireworks display, set off from the Morinville Public School field.
