This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007.

OGLICE (Under the Direction of Dwight Brooks) ABSTRACT The 1950’s was an era that welcomed Lucy Ricardo into their homes. The comedy I Love Lucy premiered on Oct. 15, 1951, on CBS. This study seeks to demonstrate and illustrate how Lucy Ricardo battled patriarchy, which was common among TV sitcoms of the era. Primarily, this study aims to analyze Lucy Ricardo’s role as a woman who pushes the limits of patriarchy in I Love Lucy, by examining her dual roles of someone who defies patriarchy, yet show’s allegiance to it as well. A textual analysis of 14 I Love Lucy episodes will address the established mode of domesticity in I Love Lucy, as well as opportunities for challenges that Lucy takes advantage of. This study reveals a woman who denied her husband’s wishes to control her. Lucy stepped outside of the typical portrayal of married women who were supposed to submit to their husbands and follow their every wish.     Mary Jane Croft Muncie, Delaware County February 15, 1916 – August 24, 1999 Mary Jane Croft was an American actress best known for her roles as Betty Ramsey on I Love Lucy, Ms. Daisy Enright on the radio and television versions of Our Miss Brooks, Mary Jane Lewis on The Lucy Show and Here’s Lucy, and Clara Randolph on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Mary Jane started her show business career on the stage with the civic theatre in her hometown of Muncie, Indiana. After briefly acting with the Guild Theatre in Cincinnati, Ohio, she joined the local radio station WLW and embarked on a career as a radio actress. She moved to Los Angeles in 1939 after her marriage to fellow actor, Jack Zoller. During the 1940’s and 1950’s, Mary Jane became one of a company of in- demand voice actresses. Her best-known pre-Lucille role was as Daisy Enright, the nemesis of Our Miss Brooks, which starred Eve Arden and Gale Gordon (both on radio and then on TV). After the death of her first husband, she got married for the second time in 1960, she began using her newly married name for her character on The Lucy Show (1962), which was produced by new husband, Elliott Lewis. By 1965, Mary Jane had replaced Vivian Vance, who retired from the show, as Lucy's neighbor.
