P.O. Box 174,m Ba*emans Bay, NSW, 2536 THE "GREATER" I&IJZ4t1&MS1L14LW[II NATIONAL PARK

The current Murramarang National Park stretches from Batemans Bay north along the coast to , on the NSW South Coast. It encompasses magnificent beaches, forests and coastal waterways, and an abundance of wildlife. It is also a popular tourist and holiday destination - it is the most heavily visited coastal national park in NSW south of the Royal National Park.

These environmental and recreational values are under threat -44 km long, and yet an average of only 366 metres wide, the Park is not viable for protection of its extremely high environmental values, or to sustain its current heavy level of recreational usage. The "Greater" Murramarang area is also threatened by logging and woodchipping in the State Forests east of the , right up to the Park boundary. The Friends of Durras are proposing an expansion to the Park across these State Forests and the bed of Durras Lake - a "Greater" Murramarang National Park - to protect its special values.

Residents and 'friends' of the local Durras area - surrounded by Murramarang National Park and the "Greater" Murramarang area - have been actively working towards full protection of this area since 1985. Investigations for the area's protection go back to 1940 when Myles Dunphy began the process for the creation of the current Murramarang National Park,

The "Greater" Murramarang National Park would leave a legacy for future generations and for the environment, one that was lasting and sustainable, in the creation of one of the finest coastal National Parks in NSW. The "Greater" MurramarangNational Park would expand the current Park across Durras Lake and all areas of State Forest and vacant Crown Land west to the Princes Highway. This expanded area would make the Park viable, and would encompass a large number of environmental features of high conservation value: I • There are three seperate National Estate Listings for the area, in recognision of its exceptional I environmental values, by the Commonwealth Government's Heritage Commission. • The area contains 207 species of birds and 39 u I species of native terrestrial mammals, and over 400 flora I species. Present in Greater Murramarang are over a quarter of Australia's bird species and almost 15% of its mammals, C H • There are 26 animal species considered as I 'threatened' by NSW legislation living in these forest, - I lake and coastal environments. I • Durras Lake is considered the most pristine 'large, slow-turnover lake' on the South Coast. • There are highly significant rainforest pockets in Greater Murramarang, including rare stands of subtropical/warm temperate rainforest and littoral rainforest, and over 20 rainforest species at the edge of their known range. I • There are also highly significant Aboriginal values I in the area, with 392 Aboriginal sites recorded there, 01 including artifacts and middens. I • Murramarang National Park is a focal point for regional tourism. With an estimated 690, 000 visitors in 1990, Tourism NSW considered it a "feature of State significance." I Name Address

PLEASE PROTECT GREATER MURRAM ARAN

Dear Mr Car,

I write to ask you to protect the 'Greater Murramarang' area, to make the current Murramarang National Park viable for environmental protection and recreation. Extending the Park across the Lake and State Forest areas to the Princes highway would help protect over two hundred bird species, 39 mammal species, and 26 threatened animal species, along with high conservation value eucalypt forests, rainforests and one of the most important coastal lakes in Southern NSW.

Proposals for protection of the "Greater" Murramarang area go back to the mid 1970s, and with the area threatened by logging, woodchipping and heavy recreation, now is the time to protect this beautiful and important area.

Creation of a "Greater" Tvlurramarang National Park would give the South Coast one of the finest Coastal National Parks in NSW.

Yours sincerely,

(signed) N) I I AFFIX THE HON. BOB CARR STAMP OOr BERE I PREMIER OF N.S.W. I I
