Tom Hanks: A Tribute November 8-14 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters Screening Schedule Toy Story. 1995. USA. Directed by John Lasseter. Screenplay by Joss Whedon, Andrew Stanton, Joel Cohen, Alec Sokolow. Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is the toy that Andy plays with the most, but when he gets a Buzz Lightyear action figure for his birthday, Andy’s favorite becomes intensely jealous of the clueless spaceman. In the first completely computer-animated feature film, Lasseter and company created two utterly believable, computer-generated worlds—one real, one toy—in a timeless story of friendship and loyalty. 81 min. Hanks proved his range—and nabbed his first Academy Award nomination—with the role of Josh Baskin, a 12- year-old whose wish to be a grown-up is granted by a haunted carnival game. As the “adult” Josh, Hanks mixes physical humor with genuine glimpses of the vulnerability of adolescence. The biggest success of Hanks’s career to that point, the film also made Penny Marshall the first woman director to surpass $100 million at the box office. • Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Dafina McMillan February 5, 2014 [email protected] 212-609-5955 New from TCG Books: Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley NEW YORK, NY – Theatre Communications Group (TCG) is pleased to announce the publication of John Patrick Shanley’s Outside Mullingar, a compassionate and delightful romantic comedy from the Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award and Oscar-winning author of Doubt. The play is currently enjoying its world premiere, helmed by the Tony Award-winning director, Doug Hughes, at Manhattan Theatre Club, starring Debra Messing and Brían F. O’Byrne. “In the work of John Patrick Shanley, the truth is as charming as it is painful, reality as touched with magic as it is factual and existence as absolute as it is illusory.” — BOMB magazine Outside Mullingar tells the romance of Anthony and Rosemary, neighbors in rural Ireland who are nearing their middle years. It is by turns poetic, uplifting, dark and funny as hell. Anthony is an introverted farmer and Rosemary is the woman who vows to have him at all costs. When Anthony’s father threatens to disinherit his son, Rosemary steps into the middle of a land feud and family eccentricities beyond what one might imagine. On the brink of romantic catastrophe, this one-of-a-kind Irish heroine fights against time and mortality in hopes of securing her dream of love. “Mr. Shanley’s finest work since Doubt…give[s] such consistent pleasure.” — New York Times John Patrick Shanley’s plays include Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Savage in Limbo and Dirty Story.

  • Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini November 3, 1500 – February 13, 1571
Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini November 3, 1500 – February 13, 1571 I ALL men of whatsoever quality they be, who have done anything of excellence, or which may properly resemble excellence, ought, if they are persons of truth and honesty, to describe their life with their own hand; but they ought not to attempt so fine an enterprise till they have passed the age of forty. This duty occurs to my own mind now that I am travelling beyond the term of fifty-eight years, and am in Florence, the city of my birth. Many untoward things can I remember, such as happen to all who live upon our earth; and from those adversities I am now more free than at any previous period of my career-nay, it seems to me that I enjoy greater content of soul and health of body than ever I did in bygone years. I can also bring to mind some pleasant goods and some inestimable evils, which, when I turn my thoughts backward, strike terror in me, and astonishment that I should have reached this age of fifty-eight, wherein, thanks be to God, I am still travelling prosperously forward. II IT is true that men who have laboured with some show of excellence, have already given knowledge of themselves to the world; and this alone ought to suffice them; I mean the fact that they have proved their manhood and achieved renown. Yet one must needs live like others; and so in a work like this there will always be found occasion for natural bragging, which is of divers kinds, and the first is that a man should let others know he draws his lineage from persons of worth and most ancient origin.

Monday, November 16, 2020 | No. 142 Jack Elam was one of the most widely recognized character actors working in film and television during his five- decade career beginning in the 1950’s. Born in Arizona 100 years ago on 11/13/1920, after graduating high school Elam moved to Los Angeles and enrolled in Santa Monica Junior College. After serving two years in the US Navy during WWII, he embarked on a career as an accountant. By chance, Samuel Goldwyn was one of his bookkeeping clients, and Elam was able to parlay the connection into his first role in acting. Elam became well-known for playing villains in dozens of Westerns and gangster stories popular during that period. He played his desperados with an air of crazy, accentuated by his physical appearance. As a youth, Elam lost the use of his left eye after being stabbed in it with a pencil during a fight with another Boy Scout from his troop. Later in his career, Elam played a wider range of roles, including comedic performances in films such as Support your Local Sheriff, Support your Local Gunfighter and The Cannonball Run. The contribution of character actors is often overlooked in Hollywood’s paparazzi culture, lost in the shadow of the bright lights trained on headliners. However, good character actors are highly regarded by their fellow actors, and often enjoy long careers that span decades. • Prodigal Son By John Patrick Shanley
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACTS: Gus Schulenburg [email protected] g | 2126095941 May 9, 2016 New from TCG Books: Prodigal Son by John Patrick Shanley NEW YORK, NY – Theatre Communications Group (TCG) is pleased to announce the publication of Prodigal Son by John Patrick Shanley. The play premiered in January of 2016 and is currently in production Off Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club in New York. "A keen, passionate portrait of the author as a poetryspouting romantic punk torn between literary dreams and his roots in the Bronx... Prodigal Son is pure, splendid Shanley: shaggily idealistic and always scratching a philosophical itch underneath jokes and banter." —David Cote, Time Out New York When a troubled but gifted boy from the South Bronx arrives at a private school in New Hampshire, two faculty members wrestle with how to help him adjust to his new environment. The boy is violent, brilliant, alienated, and on fire with a ferocious loneliness. As with his Pulitzer Prizewinning play, Doubt, John Patrick Shanley has drawn on his personal experiences to create an explosive portrait of a young man on the verge of either salvation or destruction. “Closely modeled on Mr. Shanley’s experiences as a student, Prodigal Son is a hymn to the impossible, combustible and brilliant young thing he once was.” —Ben Brantley, New York Times John Patrick Shanley is the author of Doubt: A Parable (Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Tony Award for Best Play), Outside Mullingar (Tony nomination for Best Play), Defiance, Storefront Church, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Dirty Story, and many other plays.
