June 23, 2016 Offensive against the Syrian City of Manbij May Be the Beginning of a Campaign to Liberate the Area near the Syrian-Turkish Border from ISIS Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighters at the western entrance to the city of Manbij (Fars, June 18, 2016). Overview 1. On May 31, 2016, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-dominated military alliance supported by the United States, initiated a campaign to liberate the northern Syrian city of Manbij from ISIS. Manbij lies west of the Euphrates, about 35 kilometers (about 22 miles) south of the Syrian-Turkish border. In the three weeks since the offensive began, the SDF forces, which number several thousand, captured the rural regions around Manbij, encircled the city and invaded it. According to reports, on June 19, 2016, an SDF force entered Manbij and occupied one of the key squares at the western entrance to the city. 2. The declared objective of the ground offensive is to occupy Manbij. However, the objective of the entire campaign may be to liberate the cities of Manbij, Jarabulus, Al-Bab and Al-Rai, which lie to the west of the Euphrates and are ISIS strongholds near the Turkish border. For ISIS, the loss of the area is liable to be a severe blow to its logistic links between the outside world and the centers of its control in eastern Syria (Al-Raqqah), Iraq (Mosul). Moreover, the loss of the region will further 112-16 112-16 2 2 weaken ISIS's standing in northern Syria and strengthen the military-political position and image of the Kurdish forces leading the anti-ISIS ground offensive. -

Tenney Cornell University [email protected] Abstract To date, servility and servile systems in Babylonia have been explored with the tradi- tional lexical approach of Assyriology. If one examines servility as an aggregate phe- nomenon, these subjects can be investigated on a much larger scale with quantitative approaches. Using servile populations as a point of departure, this paper applies both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore Babylonian population dynamics in general; especially morbidity, mortality, and ages at which Babylonians experienced important life events. As such, it can be added to the handful of publications that have sought basic demographic data in the cuneiform record, and therefore has value to those scholars who are also interested in migration and settlement. Mesopotamia Before History Began In prehistoric times, small bands of people roamed the hills to the North and East of the Fertile Crescent. They slept in temporary camps and hunted for food. Around 7000 B.C.E. they started to build towns. Life was easier for babies and children in the new settlements and more people lived to be adults. Eventually, there were not enough fields to support the people. They had to search for more land and they found a fertile plain bordered by two rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates. The name Mesopotamia comes from two Greek words that mean “middle” and “river”. It was located between the forest region of northern Europe and Asia. Mesopotamia is a land surrounded by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The Euphrates is about 600 miles longer than the Tigris, but the Tigris carries more water. In ancient times, both were used for fishing, transportation and irrigation. The plain that became Mesopotamia had good farmland. The rivers carried soil down from the mountains and there was plenty of sunshine. However, there was not much rain. Plants need water to grow. There was plenty of water in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Sumerian farmers learned to dig ditches and make water flow into the fields. This caused enough wheat and barley to grow to feed hundreds of people. This was one of the first uses of irrigation in the world. People began making pottery for carrying water, storing seed and preparing food. In Mesopotamia, building houses was difficult because there was little wood or stone so they learned how to make mud bricks. -

Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering, Lulea University, Sweden Abstract The Iraqi marsh lands, which are known as the Garden of Eden, cover an area about 15000- 20000 sq. km in the lower part of the Mesopotamian basin where the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers flow. The marshes lie on a gently sloping plan which causes the two rivers to meander and split in branches forming the marshes and lakes. The marshes had developed after series of transgression and regression of the Gulf sea water. The marshes lie on the thick fluvial sediments carried by the rivers in the area. The area had played a prominent part in the history of man kind and was inhabited since the dawn of civilization by the Summarian more than 6000 BP. The area was considered among the largest wetlands in the world and the greatest in west Asia where it supports a diverse range of flora and fauna and human population of more than 500000 persons and is a major stopping point for migratory birds. The area was inhabited since the dawn of civilization by the Sumerians about 6000 years BP. It had been estimated that 60% of the fish consumed in Iraq comes from the marshes. In addition oil reserves had been discovered in and near the marshlands. The climate of the area is considered continental to subtropical. -

The few studies on the Orontes have two main theoretical and empirical shortcomings. First, there is a lack of critical hydropolitics studies on this river. Second, those studies focus on either the Turkish–Syrian or Lebanese–Syria relations rather than analysing the case in a holistic way. Gathering both primary (international agreements, government documents, political statements and media outlets) and secondary sources, this paper seeks to answer how could Syria, as the basin hydro-hegemon, impose its control on the basin? This study argues that the lack of trilateral initiatives, which is also refected in academic studies, is primarily due to asymmetrical power dynamics. Accordingly, Syria played a dual-game by excluding each riparian, Turkey and Lebanon, and it dealt with the issue at the bilateral interaction. Syria has used its political infuence to maintain water control vis-à-vis Lebanon, while it has used non-cooperation with Turkey to exclude Tur- key from decision-making processes. The paper also argues that the historical background and the political context have strongly informed Syria’s water policy. Finally, given the recent regional political developments, the paper fnds that Syria’s power grip on the Orontes Basin slowly fades away because of the changes in the broader political context. -

Map of the Assyrian empire up to the reign of Sargon II (721–705 BC) Neo-Assyrian period 934–612 BC The history of the ancient Middle East during the first millennium BC is dominated by the expansion of the Assyrian state and its rivalry with Babylonia. At its height in the seventh century BC, the Assyrian empire was the largest and most powerful that the world had ever known; it included all of Mesopotamia, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt, as well as parts of Anatolia and Iran. Ceramics with very thin, pale fabric, referred to as Palace Ware, were the luxury ware of the Assyrians. Glazed ceramics are also characteristically Neo-Assyrian in form and decoration. The Black Obelisk Excavated by Austin Henry Lanyard in 1845 at Nimrud (ancient Kalhu), the black limestone sculpture known as the Black Obelisk commemorates the achievements of the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III (858–824 BC); a cast of the monument stands today in the Dr. Norman Solhkhah Family Assyrian Empire Gallery (C224–227) at the OI Museum. Twenty relief panels, distributed in five rows on the four sides of the obelisk, show the delivery of tribute from subject peoples and vassal kings (a king that owes loyalty to another ruler). A line of cuneiform script below each identifies the tribute and source. The Assyrian king is shown in two panels at the top, first depicted as a warrior with a bow and arrow, receiving Sua, king of Gilzanu (northwestern Iran); and second, as a worshiper with a libation bowl in hand, receiving Jehu, king of the House of Omri (ancient northern Israel). -

Sissakian1,2, Nadhir Al-Ansari3, Nasrat Adamo4, Mukhalad Abdullah5 and Jan Laue6 Abstract Most of the Mesopotamian Plain is covered by Quaternary sediments among which the flood plain sediments of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers are the most dominant parts. Aeolian sediments; however, also cover considerable areas at different parts of the plain in forms of sand dunes, sand sheets and Nebkhas. The dunes are the most common form and they are creeping as well as sand sheets in vast areas causing desertification. The main reasons causing this is climate change, abandoning of agricultural areas. Salinization is another significant problem in the plain whereby the affected areas are growing in size and the concentration of the salt in the soil, as well as the groundwater is increasing rapidly. The increase in salinization is due to miss- management of water resources, and the increasing salinity of the surface and ground water which due to the use of irrigation water supplied from Al-Tharthar Depression (lake) and the Main Outfall Drain.
