DIRECTORY 2019-2020 DIOCESE OF HARRISBURG 7 October 2019 Dear Friends in Christ, This past year has been on of many trials for our Diocese and the Church. We have pledged on many occasions to demonstrate the many changes our Diocese has seen throughout the past decades. While these challenges will be ongoing, we will soon enter a near new and with it, we have new opportunities to share the good news of Jesus Christ. I hope each of you will join me as we continue on this journey. This year I am pleased to present to you with this 4th edition of our Diocesan Directory. It is a comprehensive overview of our parishes, schools, diocesan ministries, apostolates and services. Communication is one of our perennial goals but also one of our perennial challenges and this new directory is just one of our efforts to keep the lines of communication open and making our diocesan leadership accessible to everyone. This Directory is also posted on our diocesan website (www.hbgdiocese.org), as a downloadable and searchable file. As changes may occur throughout the year, we will be updating the online version to keep it as current as possible. In addition, I am most grateful for the support provided by our advertisers, and I urge you to patronize their services. I hope you will find this information helpful as we continue our mission of evangelization in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ to all. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Ronald W. Gainer, D.D., J.C.L. GAINER, D.D., J.C.L. Eleventh Bishop of Harrisburg † Ordained to the priesthood on May 19, 1973 † Installed as Bishop of Harrisburg on March 19, 2014 ishop Ronald William Gainer was born on August 24, B1947 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania and educated in the town’s Catholic Schools. He attended Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, completing his studies in 1973. Bishop Gainer was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Allentown on May 19, 1973. In 1986, he earned a licentiate degree in Canon Law and a diploma in Latin Letters from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He served in various ministries in the Diocese of Allentown, including pastor of Holy Trinity Church (1986-1999); Judicial Vicar (1986); and Secretary of Catholic Life and Evangelization (1999). On December 2, 2002, he was named the Second Bishop of Lexington, Kentucky and had his Episcopal Ordination on February 22, 2002. After serving Lexington for 12 years, Gainer was named the Eleventh Bishop of Harrisburg on January 24, 2014. His Episcopal Installation was March 19, 2014. Bishop Gainer is a member of the Canon Law Society of America and currently serves as the President of the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference. The Coat of Arms for Bishop Gainer is composed of a shield with its symbols, a motto scroll, and the external ornaments. By tradition, the arms of the bishop of a diocese are joined to the arms of his jurisdiction – in this case, the Diocese of Harrisburg, seen on the left side of the shield. The personal arms of Bishop Gainer, seen on the right side of the shield, reflect his life and heritage. These arms include a red field on which is displayed a silver (white) bard, encircled by a golden (yellow) ring. This is the dominant configuration, honoring Saint Catherine of Sienna, of the arms of the Bishop’s home, The Diocese of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Above the bar is a silver pine tree and below are three silver hills with the golden double- crossmember, known as the “Cross of Lorraine.” These eastern European (Baden and Slovak) charges are used to honor Bishop Gainer’s heritage. For his Episcopal Motto, Bishop Gainer selected - From His Fullness Grace Upon Grace – taken from the Gospel of Saint John (John 1:16).
