India Pavilion Is a Great Success at the Cannes Film Festival India Pavilion is a great success at the Cannes Film Festival Cannes, 19 May 2014: The India Pavilion at the 67 th Cannes Film Festival has been seeing spectacular success for the last three days. Organized by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, in association with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the packed pavilion was inaugurated on 15 th May by His Excellency Arun K. Singh, Indian Ambassador to France; Shri Bimal Julka, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India; Indian cinema legend Dr Kamal Haasan; veteran filmmaker and producer Ramesh Sippy; renowned filmmaker Sudhir Mishra; Uday Chopra, actor, producer, and CEO, YRF Entertainment; screenwriter Arash Amel; Jerome Paillard, Executive Director, Cannes Film Market; Dr A. Didar Singh, Secretary General, FICCI; and filmmaker and producer Bobby Bedi. The pavilion has seen a lot of interesting activity, with hoards of people jostling for space as they watch the interactive sessions. The inaugural day, 15 th May, saw a session on 'The Making of Grace of Monaco' – featuring Uday Chopra and Jonathan Reiman from YRF Entertainment – one of the producers of the opening film at the festival – and Arash Amel, the writer of the film. Anchored by Patrick Frater, Asia Bureau Chief of Variety, the discussion hinted at interesting growth and expansion for Indian cinema in the international space by means of collaboration and co-production. A very special session, 'The Journey to Cannes', was organized at the pavilion for 'Titli', India's official entry in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival. (Also selected to the festival's Critics Week section is another Indian film, Gitanjali Rao's 'TrueLoveStory'.) The cast and crew of 'Titli' – director Kanu Behl; actors Ranvir Shorey and Shashank Arora; writer Sharat Katariya; editor Namrata Rao; Avtar Panesar, VP, International Operations, Yash Raj Films; and Guneet Monga, Founder, Sikhya Entertainment, and CEO, Anurag Kashyap Films Pvt. Ltd – were felicitated by the Ministry of I&B, and spoke about their experience of making the film and being selected to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival. A remarkable feature of the activities at this year's India Pavilion at the Cannes Film Market was exclusive networking receptions co-hosted by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, and film bodies, producers and filmmakers from three countries: New Zealand, Australia and Germany. The New Zealand event was organized in coordination with the New Zealand Film Commission; the delegation was led by NZFC CEO Dave Gibson, and comprised filmmakers and producers from the country; Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason led the Australia contingent; and German Films organized the third event. The Indian guest list saw representation from filmmakers, producers and industry body members at Cannes this year. This new initiative is aimed at promoting and forging ties for co-production and partnerships between India and these countries. On the sidelines of these events were structured B2B meetings between Indian delegates and international stakeholders in order to facilitate business promotion and explore opportunities for partnership between the Indian film community and the global one. Also at the pavilion on 16 th and 17 th May were sessions on co-production with representatives from India and six other countries, and a discussion on Single Window Clearance, the Ministry of I&B's initiative for promoting hassle-free film shooting for the global film community in India; Dr Kamal Haasan interviewed by critic and anchor Anupama Chopra; filmmakers Ramesh Sippy, Sudhir Mishra and Bobby Bedi in conversation about Indian cinema today and going forward, and Indian films at Cannes over the years. The international presence at the India Pavilion comprised luminaries such as His Excellency Richard Wells, Amanda Nevill, Chief Executive, British Film Institute; Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director, Toronto International Film Festival; Dave Gibson, CEO, New Zealand Film Commission; Carolle Brabant, Executive Director, Telefilm Canada; Franck Priot, Deputy Director, Film France; Afghan filmmaker Atiq Rahimi; Karen Thorne-Stone, CEO-President, Ontario Media Development Corporation; Graeme Mason, CEO, Screen Australia; Benoit Ginistry, Director General, FIAPF; Australian producer Robyn Kershaw; Colin Burrows, CEO, Special Treats Productions; Cindy Shyu, CEO, Light House Productions, China; Pierre Assouline, Owner, Producer, Only Films, Paris, and Westeast Films, Mumbai; Poland Film Commission, and many others. Six years later, with her marriage in serious difficulty, Alfred Hitchcock offers her the chance to return to Hollywood to play the role of Marnie in his next film. But France is also threatening to annex Monaco, the tiny principality where she became the Princess. Grace is torn and forced to choose between the creative flame that still burns within her and her role as Her Serene Highness, Princess of Monaco. INTERVIEW WITH OLIVIER DAHAN “I was interested in telling how a torn woman finds it impossible – or at least very hard – to find the right balance between her life as a wife, a mother and a woman and her career” What did you find appealing about GRACE OF MONACO? Is it particularly difficult to direct an actress like her? Apart from anything else, it is the fact that she was an actress and an artist who had to give up on her career.

  • Koel Chatterjee Phd Thesis
Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

The authors wish to acknowledge the original publication context of this essay. See Geeta Kapur and Ashish Rajadhyaksha, ‘Bombay/ Mumbai 1992-2001’ in Iwona Blazwick (ed.), Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis, Tate Publishing, London, 2001 This publication accompanied a major exhibition at the Tate Modern, London (February- April 2001) titled Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis. The project set out to examine key moments of cultural creativity in nine cities across the world on the following premise: that at different times in different places through the twentieth century, the energy of the modern metropolis peaked to produce a cultural explosion, where the arts flourished in a dynamic and radical interchange. The reasons for these creative flashpoints are diverse, but each city, at its particular time, can be seen to have become a crucible drawing artists from the city and other regions into an artistic and intellectual ferment.

nos 006 alft 0025 “There was more glamour in 1979 in Delhi University than there is in the film industry today!” 3 - time National AwardWinning filmmaker alumnus Sudhir Mishra 2016 Atisha Jain Updated: Jan 30, 2016 09:01 IST Sudhir Mishra at the Crime Writer’s Festival in Delhi January 2016 alpix 0605 Photo: Virendra Singh Gosain The idea of meeting Sudhir Mishra, the three-time National Award-winning filmmaker with a 30-year career and a French equivalent of a knighthood is intimidating. The writer-director is known for his hard-hitting, realistic and richly political films. What sort of research do you do to create your characters? I never research. I never make films about things I don’t know. I had lived in Mumbai from 1982-83 till 1990 when I made Dharavi, which is possibly about my experiences in Bombay. I was around when the Emergency happened. I was 16-17 years old, starting college. I knew all the characters – that’s why I say they are my imaginary elder brothers – in the beginning of Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi; they were all 23-24 at that time. I didn’t have to ask anybody when I started writing Hazaaron... in 1998-99. Your films always have strong female characters… Because those are based on women I know! I grew up with a paternal grandmother who single-handedly took care of five sons. In our household, women were stronger. Even my cousin sisters are far more independent than the guys. Do you think filmmakers depend on a glamorous cast for box office success much more now? There was more glamour in 1979 in Delhi University than there is in the film industry today! A trend in Bollywood you detest.
