It contains an introductory section on the program's history, descriptions of the program sites in Bataan(Philippines), Galang (Indonesia), and Phanat Nikhom (Thailand), notes on content standards, an activitiesguide, training guides, and resource materials for the culturalorientation component of the program. The section on contentstandards outlines the development of standards, a synopsis of contentby topic area, a topical list of content standards, additionalrecommended subtopics, and an alphabetical list of standards. The activitiesguide contains information concerning classroom orientation, time management, communication, housing, employment, consumerism andfinance, community and social services, health and sanitation,social roles, resettlement and sponsorship, the transit process, and anintegrated curriculum model. The training guides include materials forteacher training and classroom use concerning staff development,training techniques, and use of resource materials. A section on resource materials lists print materials used by all three sites,print materials developed by the sites, and audiovisual materialsused by all sites. The training emphaxises self.sufficiency. The different implementingsondes have been responsible for developing teem plans and classroom activities bated onregional curricula for ESL and CO and since August 1932 for Pre.employment Trainhig. The agencieshave also developed training programs for teaching and supervisory staff. The students In the 14 to 20 week program range in age from 16 to 55 years and come from the countries ofVietnam, Cambodia and Laos. They are placed in classes at one of five levels, A, 8, C, D orE, according to their English ability with A being the lowest and E the highest.* CO classes areconducted primarily in English and are interpreted into the various Indochinese langusges by specially trained refugee aides nailed Assistant Teachers or Ars. A 10% sample are given pm- and post. program tests to measure their knowledge of theCO competencies. The tests are given in the native language of the students. At present the program is offered at three sites bythe following agencies: Bataan, Philippines: International Catholic Migration Commission Galang, Indonesia: A consortium of: Save The Children Federation The Experiment in International Living Phanat, Nikhom, Thailand The Consortium: Save The Children Federation The Experiment in International Living World Education Previous sites and implementing agencies have included:Ban Vint:1i, Thailand: The Con- sortium; Nongkhal, Thailand: Pragmatics International; andHong Kong: Lutheran Im- migration and Refugee Service /American Council forNationalities Service. The camp programs are supported by the Refugee ServiceCenter with its offices in Manila, Philippines, staffed by the Center for Applied Linguistics. This centerprovides resources, services and coordination on a regional level for all theIntensive Program sites in Southeast Asia. Regional meetings are held to facilitate inter-siteexchange regarding program design, curricula, methods, materials and other issues related to theregional effort. Development in all areas is on-going. The primary goal of the Intensive Program is to assist U.S.-boundrefugees in coping with life in their new country and to facilitate their achievingself-sufficiency. To help in this effort, the Cultural Orientation component of the program provides refugeestudents with realistic, up-to-date information about life in the U.S. and the resettlement process.It focuses on important value and attitudinaldifferences and teaches students essential skills, e.g., handling of U.S. currency, use of the telephone, and how to find a job. Cultural Orientation also forms part of the Pre-employment TrainingProgram. See the Pre-employment Resource Manual for details of how morespecific employment CO is taught.
