Emergent Stops John J. Ohala University of California, Berkeley Two of the most fundamental distinctions between classes of speech sounds is that between sonorants and obstruents and between continuants and non-continuants. Sonorants are characterized as sounds which have no constriction small enough to impede the flow of air to the point of creating any audible turbulence; obstruents, as sounds which have a constriction which does impede the flow of air to the point of creating turbulence a stop burst. Continuants are sounds which could be extended indefinitely whereas non-continuants involve a momentary and abrupt attenuation of the speech signal amplitude. This being the case, it is a rather remarkable phonological event when a stop, which is an non-continuant obstruent, appears as it were, “out of nowhere” surrounded by speech sounds which are either sonorants and/or continuants. Typically these are referred to in the phonological literature as ‘epenthetic’ or ‘intrusive’ stops, terms which reflect the belief that they were introduced by some external cause. Glossary of Key Terms accent: a pronunciation variety used by a specific group of people. allophone: different phonetic realizations of a phoneme. allophonic variation: variations in how a phoneme is pronounced which do not create a meaning difference in words. alveolar: a sound produced near or on the alveolar ridge. alveolar ridge: the small bony ridge behind the upper front teeth. approximants: obstruct the air flow so little that they could almost be classed as vowels if they were in a different context (e.g. /w/ or /j/). articulatory organs – (or articulators): are the different parts of the vocal tract that can change the shape of the air flow. articulatory settings or ‘voice quality’: refers to the characteristic or long-term positioning of articulators by individual or groups of speakers of a particular language. aspirated: phonemes involve an auditory plosion (‘puff of air’) where the air can be heard passing through the glottis after the release phase. assimilation: a process where one sound is influenced by the characteristics of an adjacent sound. back vowels: vowels where the back part of the tongue is raised (like ‘two’ and ‘tar’) bilabial: a sound that involves contact between the two lips. breathy voice: voice quality where whisper is combined with voicing. cardinal vowels: a set of phonetic vowels used as reference points which do not relate to any specific language. central vowels: vowels where the central part of the tongue is raised (like ‘fur’ and ‘sun’) centring diphthongs: glide towards /ə/. citation form: the way we say a word on its own. close vowel: where the tongue is raised as close as possible to the roof of the mouth. -

Minimal Pair Approaches to Phonological Remediation Jessica A. Barlow, Ph.D.,1 and Judith A. Gierut, Ph.D.2 ABSTRACT This article considers linguistic approaches to phonological reme- diation that emphasize the role of the phoneme in language. We discuss the structure and function of the phoneme by outlining procedures for de- termining contrastive properties of sound systems through evaluation of minimal word pairs. We then illustrate how these may be applied to a case study of a child with phonological delay. The relative effectiveness of treat- ment approaches that facilitate phonemic acquisition by contrasting pairs of sounds in minimal pairs is described. A hierarchy of minimal pair treat- ment efficacy emerges, as based on the number of new sounds, the number of featural differences, and the type of featural differences being intro- duced. These variables are further applied to the case study, yielding a range of possible treatment recommendations that are predicted to vary in their effectiveness. A phonetic and phonological analysis of the consonants of Arabic and English can be useful in overcoming the hindrances that confront the Arab EFL learners. The larger aim is to bring about pedagogical changes that can go a long way in improving pronunciation and ensuring the occurrence of desirable learning outcomes. Introduction Cannorn (1967) and Ekundare (1993) define phonetics as sounds which is the basis of human speech as an acoustic phenomenon. It has a source of vibration somewhere in the vocal apparatus. According to Varshney (1995), Phonetics is the scientific study of the production, transmission and reception of speech sounds. It studies the medium of spoken language. On the other hand, Phonology concerns itself with the evolution, analysis, arrangement and description of the phonemes or meaningful sounds of a language (Ramamurthi, 2004). -

CHAPTER 3 CUMULATIVE FAITHFULNESS EFFECTS IN FIRST -LANGUAGE ACQUISITION 3.1 Introduction This chapter introduces and analyzes cumulative faithfulness effects (henceforth CFEs) in first-language acquisition. As discussed in Chapter 1, CFEs occur when multiple markedness constraints outrank or outweigh multiple faithfulness constraints, which themselves are differentially ranked or weighted, forcing the grammar to choose between multiple unmarked (and thus unfaithful) mappings. L1 acquisition is thus a prime source for CFEs—most researchers agree that in the initial state, markedness constraints outrank faithfulness constraints, thus setting up the type of grammar in which CFEs are likely to be found. The four examples discussed in this chapter come both from normally developing and delayed phonologies, showing that CFEs are naturally occurring and not uncommon phenomena. The normally-developing examples come from the famous case study of Amahl (Smith, 1973). The phonologically-delayed examples are drawn from the Developmental Phonology Archive at Indiana University (Gierut, 2008). The Archive includes data on more than 200 children with phonological delays who were participating in a larger descriptive and experimental investigation of phonological development. The chapter begins with a general discussion of the study of first-language phonological acquisition and the assumptions that are made here (§3.2). §3.3 illustrates 56 two nearly identical CFEs in which segmental deletion is used to avoid a two-feature repair; §3.4 discusses a CFE in which deletion of one segment is used to avoid a two-step repair which consists of deletion of another segment plus a featural repair. §3.5 introduces a CFE in which featural deletion is used to avoid a two-feature repair. -

THE PHONEME 1. The phoneme When we speak, we produce a continuous stream of sounds. In studying speech we divide this stream into small pieces that we call segments . The word ‘man’ is pronounced with a first segment mmm, a second segment æææ and a third segment nnn. Just as there is an abstract alphabet as the basis of our writing, so there is an abstract set of units as the basis of our speech. These units are called phonemes , and the complete set of these units is called the phonemic system of the language. Free variation & complementary distribution The phonemes themselves are abstract, but there are many slightly different ways in which we make the sounds that represent these phonemes, just as there are many ways in which we may make a mark on a piece of paper to represent a particular (abstract) letter of the alphabet. Whenever we hear, for example, two different ways of making a bbb, we speak of two different realisations of the phoneme. Since one can be substituted for the other without changing the meaning; the two realisations are said to be in free variation . On another hand, when we talk about different realisations of phonemes, we sometimes call these realisations allophones . For example, we find that the realisation of ttt in the word ‘tea’ is aspirated (as are all voiceless plosives when they occur before stressed vowels at the beginning of syllables). In the word ‘eat’, the realisation of ttt is unaspirated (as are all voiceless plosives when they occur at the end of a syllable and are not followed by a vowel).
