The ‘Gap Year’ is a strongly debated issue in schools, amongst parents and of course by Year 12 students these days. Will it add value? Will they actually return to study? Do they need a break after Year 12? Three of our most recent Old Collegians share their ‘Gap Year’ journey so far. Meg Dunne Class of ‘12 Meg Dunne’s dream of travelling to Italy has come true. After finishing Year 12 at Monivae as part of the Class of ‘12, Meg wanted to have a break before going to study at university. Meg, originally from Port Fairy, boarded at Monivae College and said the Gap Year gave her something to look forward to during Year 12. She arrived in Italy in mid-March and became an au pair for a family in Turin, with a five-year-old daughter and six-year-old son. “They learn English at school and have had English speaking au pairs prior to me so they are able to speak near perfect English with me, while also teaching me Italian,” Meg said. “In the short time I’ve been in Italy I have been Meg said she was very fortunate to have such a Molly Kent Class of ‘12 to Milan, Valle d’Aosta, Naples, Capri, Pompeii nice family, who treated her as part of the family. and Genova; I have also been to London and A Gap Year was always the plan for “I live with the family and I have my own section Switzerland,” she said.
