Coaches Corner with Joel McInnes

Coaches Corner..... I’m Back! After missing last month's Coaches Corner, I’ve been flooded with requests. Where were you Doc? Unfortunately I missed the cutoff date but I’m back to give you the juice on what’s happening with coaches on the GC. First up, any coaches who are looking to get their level one coaching course done, need to contact me at [email protected] I will be organising a session very soon once I get enough numbers. Coaching sessions We are looking at holding some information sessions on Friday night at Carrara during club games. This seems to be the best time to get everyone there; I will be holding a variety of sessions, just check the GCCRBA website for more information shortly. Today’s Corner is in regards to Tournament basketball. Lots of our rep teams have Classics coming up in a few weeks and I want to touch on a few things. Preparation – After playing on the weekends it is a very different scenario to classics where you may be playing two games a day for four days straight. Some games can be as early as 9am. Some coaches will have training sessions early in the lead up to classics, but it is important for players to do some individual training or scrimmage to prepare themselves. Diet – You need plenty of fuel to play so many games in close proximity. Carbs are usually the best way to energy load the night before games, so lots of pasta and rice should put you in good shape. Bananas are always great for quick energy, and some people go for chocolate as a late, last resort, but you should be more prepared than that. Lots of fluids throughout the classics and good sleep. Stretching – Warmups and Warmdowns are essential. After the game, go for a walk to get the lactic acid out of your body. When you get back to your room, get your feet up and relax. Mental Toughness – Everyone gets tired, it’s the best players who rise above it. Feed off the energy of your team mates, be positive and supportive of others. Play with great body language, don’t let your opponent know you are tired. Enjoy the experience – all the training sessions throughout the season are preparation for your team to be ready for this. Play as hard as you can, listen to your coaches and have your team mates back and you will have a great time. Massive swings – I’ve seen many games that looked like blowouts turn into massive comebacks. Momentum is everything in junior basketball, keep working hard and things will turn your way. Likewise, if you are in front and

Gold Coast C i t y Regional Basketball Association Issue 45 March 2014 playing well, don’t let off the pressure.. Bench players step up! – Injuries and tired players mean more opportunities for bench players. When you get your turn to step in, play with confidence, don’t worry about when you are getting subbed out. Play with aggression, you might only be out there for 4 minutes, so crash the boards, dive for loose balls and take a charge.

Did you know??? Carrara stadium used to only be the two middle courts. The two long extra courts were added about 20 odd years ago. Joel McInnes DOC
