The Australia Women's Basketball Team will be on the Gold Coast for their first pre World Championship Camp from the 13th-18th April. (Please see more information in the newsletter regarding this). Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/GoldCoastBasketball Gold Coast C i t y Regional Basketball Association Issue 45 March 2014 Honourable Mentions Congratulations to the following athletes that have been named in the Qld South U16 State Squads prior to the official team announcements at the conclusion of State Champs: Flynn Cameron, Tobias Cameron, Callum Dalton, Levi Frankland, Cody Gager, Campbell Green, Oliver Hill, Phoebe Johnston, Ellen McVeigh, Jalen Patton- Croker and Morgan Riley. From these players, two teams will be selected, the Under 15 Emerging team will compete in the Nunawading Spectres Queen’s Birthday Tournament June 7-9, 2014 in Melbourne. The Basketball QLD South Under 16 State team (boys & girls) will compete at the 2014 Australian Junior Championships in Geelong VIC, from the 5th – 12th July 2014. Good luck to all the athletes involved. Congratulations to Sarah Glazebrook for her progression as a referee this season. Sarah has been confirmed as a State Grade Referee (Level 2) To attain a level 2 grade the referee must demonstrate the following: • High judgment of all situations • Excellent rule knowledge and application • A sound understanding of player and team intent • Strong player/coach behaviour management and game management High Performance Coach Development Thirteen coaches from around the state are about to embark on a two-year program aimed at developing them into the next group of high performance coaches. Following a successful inaugural run in 2012-13, the Basketball Queensland Advanced Coach Development Program has this year seen an increase in applications and successful applications. The program forms a key part of Basketball Australia’s national coach performance pathway, seeing coaches commit to two years of mentoring and development programs in the aim of becoming potential Queensland state team and national level coaches. The program focuses on providing Queensland coaches with a two-year Gold Coast C i t y Regional Basketball Association Issue 45 March 2014 development opportunity to extend and refine their skills, improve their knowledge, develop leadership skills and create experiences to deliver results consistently within high performance sport. Participants within the Advanced Coaches Development program will be exposed to specialists from the worlds of business, academics, sports and coaching to assist in their development and initiate thought, and encourage them to seek out mentors and link with coaches at elite levels to further their development. The coaches who complete the program will have an improved understanding of the dynamics of high performance coaching and increased competency levels through experience, networking and mentoring opportunities. Part of the program involves two residential workshops a year, in July and September, where coaches take part in intensive workshop sessions and network with other coaches. With many coaches based regionally, the program provides an opportunity for coaches to meet with their peers and discuss ideas and philosophies, and ultimately pass on their knowledge and experiences to their local associations. The program culminates in a study tour of the United States, with the group visiting basketball colleges and professional teams, the first of these tours in November 2013 receiving high praise for its content and networking opportunities with elite coaches in the USA. 2014-15 Advanced Coach Development Program Inductees. More than 500 players and officials took to the courts at Hibiscus Sports Complex, Mt Gravatt in a jam-packed day of finals action, with a total of 24 finals games across four divisions taking place. More than 2,500 people passed through the gates during the day to cheer on teams. Southern Districts Basketball Association took home a total of six championship titles in Premier League, and securing the Harold Peacock Shield for the association with the highest overall competition points during the season. Entry nominations are open to all Basketball Queensland affiliated associations, with season champion teams from BQJBC, QNJBC and CDC competitions gaining automatic entry into the annual State Championships events. Each tournament is segmented by age group (Under 12s, Under 14s, Under 16s, Under 18s) with separate events and venues for boys and girls in the Under 14 and Under 16 age groups. Teams are also designated into divisions to allow for strong competition in an even playing field. Each tournament runs for four to five days, with Basketball Queensland affiliated associations able to nominate to host an event each year. The QBL is a State-wide competition with teams stretching from Cairns in the north to the Gold Coast in the south.
