The Commander’s Action Line serves as a direct link for Tinker personnel to bring questions or concerns to the commander’s attention, in the case that a timely resolution of issues through facility management or unit chain of command doesn’t occur. Items of interest to the installation overall will be published in the Tinker Take Off to effect positive change across Tinker and lead to improvements in safety, working conditions, quality of life and a better understand- ing of base programs and processes. Below are some helpful telephone numbers to assist you in trying to resolve an issue. To submit an Action Line, send an email directly to [email protected] and a response should be received in a timely manner. Col. Kenyon K. Bell 72nd Air Base Wing Commander Q: I have noticed since the new entrance/exit has been put in (near the 76th Aircraft Maintenance Group) that a lot of cars when you enter through are parked the wrong direction. This happens every day. Who patrols that parking lot? I know they park like that so they can go out the new entrance but it is still a frustration. Why do people keep doing this? Can they be ticketed for parking the wrong direction? This happens throughout the whole parking lot but it is more prominent near the new entrance/exit.

A: Thank you for your inquiry into this matter. Without knowing the exact locations surrounding your concerns, we are unable to address your specific comments. Per AFMAN 31-116, Tinker AFB Supplement, backing into spaces where the vehicle will be facing the flow of traffic when diagonally parked is an infraction and may result in a parking ticket. We encourage personnel to refer possible parking violations to their facility’s designated Parking Warden for appropriate action. In addition to individual reporting, the Parking Wardens and Security Force Squadron conduct spot checks throughout the day. For further information, personnel can contact the 72nd SFS’s Operations Section at 734-6741 or by email at 72 SFS Operations. ’Tis the season for warmer weather. Warmer weather brings barbecues and swimming parties, summer activities and sporting events. It also means motorcycle season is ramping up. As more motorcycles get dusted off and moved out of garages, it’s important to remember the safety and precautions as a driver and a rider. Riding on Tinker Air Force Base also requires certain licensure, so if you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, listen up. According to Brent Williams, 72nd Air Base Wing Safety Officer and motorcycle safety program manager, all riders are required to have endorsements from their state license. They must also carry the state required insurance and wear personal protective equipment, which aligns with Air Force Instruction and regulations. For visibility, riders are encouraged to wear brightly colored and retro-reflective outer garments. “Department of Defense requires installation riders to wear approved (certified DOT or higher) helmets,” Williams said. “They’re also supposed to wear long- sleeved shirts or jackets, long pants, sturdy over-the- ankle footwear and full-fingered gloves.” Williams also serves as an instructor to train riders on Tinker AFB. With May kicking off National Motorcycle Awareness Month, Williams hopes many will take advantage of the courses offered to riders. “It doesn’t matter if you’re an expert or if you just like Dustin Harlan, a Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCoach, gives feedback to Hannah Jean-Marie, 960th Air- riding every once in a while for a hobby. Jillian Coleman DEFENDERS72nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs IN FUR The defenders who proudly embody U.S. Air Force Security Forces don the Airman Battle Uniforms and the recognizable blue beret, wearing gear that includes a 30-pound Level IV ballistic-plated vest, batons, handcuffs and magazines. They carry an M-4 and have an M-9 in their holsters, trained to secure the installation on which they’re stationed as well as protecting the country and its people they vowed to serve. Making up the largest career field in the Air Force, defenders are routinely trained to protect, defend and fight, whether that’s at home or across the globe. Though defenders are armed and capable of providing superior force protection, military law enforcement and ground defense, an elite part of the unit is represented by the nation’s four-legged warriors, who possess a different skillset not found in their human counterpart. The military working dogs are an asset to the Air Force, a threat to its suspects and enemies and a weapon whose capabilities and bite often surpass other pains. The mere intimidation of the K9 presence is enough. Gifted with a keen sense of smell, the K9 section ranges from German Shepherds to Belgian Malinois and a Labrador. The dogs innately have the desire to work and the ability to learn detection skills. Tech. Sgt. James Maloy, MWD trainer with the 72nd Security Forces Squadron, emphasized the dog’s ability to detect explosives, drugs and other weapons when a human is unable. “In being a handler, the passion and care for the MWD is of the utmost importance,” Maloy said. “Knowing a MWD’s change of behavior is critical in successfully finding the device, ultimately saving countless lives.” For the handlers who train and work with the dogs daily, their MWD is never considered part of the Air Force’s equipment. They are defenders, just without the ABUs and berets. Instead, their fur coats and harnesses are emblazed with warnings, “DO NOT PET,” and “Military Working Dog.” However, the handlers develop a relationship and bond unlike any human bond or interaction, which seasoned handler Staff Sgt. Meredith Jordan said is key in building and maintaining a strong team. “It’s important to invest physically and emotionally in order to have that strong, inseparable kind of bond with your dog, and it goes beyond the patrols and the training we do,” Jordan said. “They are defending the U.S. and its people and never ask or expect anything in return. They deserve our respect.” Jordan, who has been partnered with 7-year-old German Shepherd Duke, also strengthens that bond by putting in numerous hours on top of the normal work week when she’s “on the job.” Training is essential, but Jordan makes a point to play with Duke as much as she can, too. Military Working Dog Duke and his handler, Staff Sgt. Meredith Jordan, “He is still a dog, and he loves getting to run around and play. That’s fun for both of us and it’s scout the perimeter of the base. By using sound, sight and scent, the dogs an opportunity to spend more time together and build that trust with each other. Duke is the best, no can detect intruders to the base or act as a deterrent to keep the base question.” safe. (Air Force photos by Kelly White) Jordan and Duke are one of several pairs at the kennels, and she said that everyone puts in more than what is required to spend time working with their K9 teammate. You can’t just check boxes and do a bare minimum to get by. Military working dogs are able to stop aggressors, detect drugs and bombs, inflict an excruciating amount of pain and instill terror because of the high level of training and obedience their handler, trainer and kennel master spend doing. Beyond that, handlers clean their kennels, feed them, bathe them, brush their teeth, take them to routine veterinary appointments and take them on runs. Many handlers or previous handlers will adopt the MWD when their time to retire comes. Duke, who likely has a few more years left, is one of the more experienced dogs, too, which Jordan said

Staff Sgt. Sage Taylor works with MWD Fox by maneuvering the obedi- ence course in the yard behind the K-9 kennels. Not only does this give Airman 1st Class Marco Arroyo gives MWD Aruba his daily grooming at the K-9 Kennels. DEFENDERSalso factors into the partnership. IN Staff Sgt. James Stiegler, whoFUR is paired with the “black beauty” German Shepherd, Kali, agreed. Though you wouldn’t know by Kali’s size and stature, he is the youngest pup in the MWD section, arriving at Tinker last spring. Stiegler however, has been a handler for four years giving him the experience to help train the new arrival. “When I was with Timo (before Kali), he already knew what he was doing and what triggers and detectors to look for, he would lead me, which helped me become a better handler,” Stiegler said. “It can be challenging when you have a green dog because you want to get them spun up and build that relationship quickly so that you’re able to lead them and better train them. Every dog is different and every partnership is different. There are always challenges, but that makes both the dog and the handler better equipped to do their job.” With different challenges, the handlers and MWDs are continuously training and learning. Through various scenarios and obedience courses, the dogs are equipped to defend their nation and their handler, at any cost. “What you will allow will continue, and what you reward will continue,” Maloy added. There is benefit in repetition and in training that pushes both handler and K9 to achieve the desired result. Putting in the work is standard; but for the team at the kennels, the bar is always set high. “Standard” isn’t good enough.

Military Working Dog Syrius searches a warehouse on base looking for a hidden target. The MWD teams train daily in explosive and/or drug detection to keep the dogs proficient in detecting specific odors in which they are trained. By becoming proficient in their specialties, the dogs and their handlers are able to protect the personnel and resources assigned to Tinker AFB as well as high profile dignitaries worldwide.

Military Working Dog JoJo attacks Staff Sgt. Calvin Moore during an aggression session which is only one part of the dogs’ and handlers’ daily training routine. The aggression session follows six phases, or scenarios, in which teams train. These phases are shown routinely in demonstrations around base or in the surrounding communities. A misconception about the dogs is that they are all severely aggressive. The reality is that the dogs work and train simply for their favorite toy or for praise from their handler. Through rigorous training in scenarios such as a basic field interview with a person asking for directions, the dog teams can be approachable; or the handler can look for weapons on a suspect, but if the suspect Military Working Dog Kali and handler, Staff Sgt. James Stiegler perform shows aggression to the handler, the dog can attack without command to protect its handler and serve gate presence at the Air Depot Gate. The dogs act as a psychological as a force multiplier and physical and psychological deterrence. deterrence, adding another element of force protection to the base. 14 — www.TinkerTakeOff.com — May 18, 2018 18 ‘ fest fest (customer appreciation month) JUNE 2 I 11 am - 5 pm free food . live music . car show . games live dj . wacky olympics . prize money summer reading program while supplies 11 am - 5 pm i free shirt with registration last enter to win : Season pass to white water bay? car & bike show // wacky olympics car show: $250 best in show 405.734.5615 wacky olympics: over $1000 in prize money - tinkerliving.com/sf18
