June-Oct 2021 JUNE-OCT FREE & BENEFIT 2021 PERFORMANCES SUMMERSTAGE.ORG SUMMERSTAGE NYCSUMMERSTAGE SUMMERSTAGENYC SUMMERSTAGE IS BACK More than a year after the first lockdown order, SummerStage is back, ready to once again use our city’s parks as gathering spaces to bring diverse and thriving communities together to find common ground through world-class arts and culture. We are committed to presenting a festival fully representing the city we serve - a roster of diverse artists, focused on gender equity and presenting distinct New York genres. This year, more than ever before, our festival will focus on renewal and resilience, reflective of our city and its continued evolution, featuring artists that are NYC-born, based, or inextricably linked to the city itself. Performers like SummerStage veteran Patti Smith, an icon of the city’s resilient rebelliousness, Brooklyn’s Antibalas, who have married afrobeat with New York City’s Latin soul, and hip hop duo Armand Hammer, two of today’s most important leaders of New York’s rap underground. And, as a perfect symbol of rebirth, Sun Ra’s Arkestra returns to our stage in this year of reopening, 35 years after they performed our very first concert, bringing their ethereal afro-futurist cosmic jazz vibes back to remind us of our ongoing mission and purpose. Our festival art this year also reflects our outlook -- bold, bright, powerful -- and was created by New Yorker Lyne Lucien, an award-winning Haitian artist based in Brooklyn. Lucien is an American Illustration Award Winner and a finalist for the Artbridge - Not a Monolith Residency. She has worked as a photo editor and art director at various publications including New York Magazine, The Daily Beast and Architectural Digest. Her drawings are rooted in community engagement and are influenced by the detals she noticed around her in the US and Haitian cities where she lived as a youngster. The complexities of color, form, and texture she uses in this year’s SummerStage design articulate the vivacity and diversity of NYC. This summer will certainly be different, and we will be somewhat pared-down, but we will be no less vibrant. Our shows will be staged in four parks: Rumsey Playfield in Central Park, in Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park, in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, and at the Coney Island Amphitheater along the boardwalk and will, as always, feature both iconic performances and newfangled buzz artists. The words and rhymes of hip hop identify what has arguably become the one cultural institution that urban youth rely on for honesty (keeping it real) and leadership. In 1996, there were 19 million young people aged 10-14 years old and 18.4 million aged 15-19 years old living in the US (1996 U.S. Census Bureau). According to a national Gallup poll of adolescents aged 13-17 (Bezilla 1993) since 1992, rap music has become the preferred music of youth (26%), followed closely by rock (25%). Though hip hop artists often rap about the range of adolescent confusion, desire and angst, at hip hop’s core is the commitment and vision of youth who are agitated, motivated and willing to confront complex and powerful institutions and practices to improve their 2 world.

  • 3 Feet High and Rising”--De La Soul (1989) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Vikki Tobak (Guest Post)*
“3 Feet High and Rising”--De La Soul (1989) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Vikki Tobak (guest post)* De La Soul For hip-hop, the late 1980’s was a tinderbox of possibility. The music had already raised its voice over tensions stemming from the “crack epidemic,” from Reagan-era politics, and an inner city community hit hard by failing policies of policing and an underfunded education system--a general energy rife with tension and desperation. From coast to coast, groundbreaking albums from Public Enemy’s “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” to N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton” were expressing an unprecedented line of fire into American musical and political norms. The line was drawn and now the stage was set for an unparalleled time of creativity, righteousness and possibility in hip-hop. Enter De La Soul. De La Soul didn’t just open the door to the possibility of being different. They kicked it in. If the preceding generation took hip-hop from the park jams and revolutionary commentary to lay the foundation of a burgeoning hip-hop music industry, De La Soul was going to take that foundation and flip it. The kids on the outside who were a little different, dressed different and had a sense of humor and experimentation for days. In 1987, a trio from Long Island, NY--Kelvin “Posdnous” Mercer, Dave “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur, and Vincent “Maseo, P.A. Pasemaster Mase and Plug Three” Mason—were classmates at Amityville Memorial High in the “black belt” enclave of Long Island were dusting off their parents’ record collections and digging into the possibilities of rhyming over breaks like the Honey Drippers’ “Impeach the President” all the while immersing themselves in the imperfections and dust-laden loops and interludes of early funk and soul albums.

  • Ani Difranco – Revolutionary Love Biography
Ani DiFranco – Revolutionary Love Biography The transcendent new album from Ani DiFranco, Revolutionary Love marks the latest proof of one of her most powerful gifts as an artist: a rare ability to give voice to our deepest frustrations and tensions, on both a personal and political level. “My songs have always reflected an acute connection between my personal life and the life of my society,” says the trailblazing musician and activist. “As I started to come out of dealing with years of personal hardship, I saw that my entire country was struggling with the same problems: the same themes of how much damage we do to each other and how much pain we’re carrying, and the same question of how to keep going when we’re so broken.” As her 22nd studio album in an iconic career—one that’s included winning a Grammy and countless other accolades, collaborating with legends like Prince, and breaking ground as one of the first artists to launch her own label, Righteous Babe Records— Revolutionary Love first began taking shape in the final weeks of winter 2020. After returning from a West Coast tour with a new batch of songs she’d written on the road, DiFranco laid down those tracks at her New Orleans home studio with bassist Todd Sickafoose and drummer Terence Higgins (her longtime touring bandmates), but then felt compelled to keep on writing. Before long, she’d amassed a body of work whose urgency felt undeniable. “I suddenly decided I need to push this record out by fall,” she recalls.

  • Three Waves of Feminism
01-Krolokke-4666.qxd 6/10/2005 2:21 PM Page 1 1 Three Waves of Feminism From Suffragettes to Grrls e now ask our readers to join us in an exploration of the history of W feminism or, rather, feminisms: How have they evolved in time and space? How have they framed feminist communication scholarship in terms of what we see as a significant interplay between theory and politics? And how have they raised questions of gender, power, and communication? We shall focus our journey on the modern feminist waves from the 19th to the 21st century and underscore continuities as well as disruptions. Our starting point is what most feminist scholars consider the “first wave.” First-wave feminism arose in the context of industrial society and liberal politics but is connected to both the liberal women’s rights movement and early socialist feminism in the late 19th and early 20th century in the United States and Europe. Concerned with access and equal opportunities for women, the first wave continued to influence feminism in both Western and Eastern societies throughout the 20th century. We then move on to the sec- ond wave of feminism, which emerged in the 1960s to 1970s in postwar Western welfare societies, when other “oppressed” groups such as Blacks and homosexuals were being defined and the New Left was on the rise. Second-wave feminism is closely linked to the radical voices of women’s empowerment and differential rights and, during the 1980s to 1990s, also to a crucial differentiation of second-wave feminism itself, initiated by women of color and third-world women.

#EndTheWarOnDrugs April 9, 2013 President Barack H. Obama The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W. Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, Your hard work and leadership on issues affecting the unrepresented classes of people in our nation have served as an inspiration to many of us who hope for brighter futures for all Americans. In that spirit, we believe the time is right to further the work you have done around revising our national policies on the criminal justice system and continue moving from a suppression-based model to one that focuses on intervention and rehabilitation. We are proud of your accomplishments around these issues, specifically your leadership on gun control, your investments in "problem solving courts," your creation of the Federal Interagency Reentry Council, your launching the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention and your prosecution of a record number of hate crimes in 2011 and 2012. We certainly hope that this type of leadership is appreciated by all members of Congress, regardless of political affiliation, and you are joined by members of all parties in your pursuit of a more perfected union. Mr. President, it is evident that you have demonstrated a commitment to pursue alternatives to the enforcement-only "War on Drugs" approach and address the increased incarceration rates for non-violent crimes. Your administration has moved in the right direction by committing increased funds to drug prevention and treatment programs and supporting state and local re-entry grants. We encourage you to continue your efforts to revamp the policies of the last 30 years that have seen the prison population skyrocket.

For fans of guitarist-singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco, the identification with a subjective reality experienced in her music is powerful and pleasurable enough to inspire them with ardent devotion. Ani DiFranco's influence may not be simply reduced to her media image as a bisexual feminist, with fanatically obsessive and possessive fans, who has achieved stunning financial success completely independent of any major recording label.
