  • Honors & Awards
2009-10 WCHA MEN’S YEARBOOK HONORS & AWARDS THE HOBEY BAKER MEMORIAL AWARD HISTORY OF THE AWARD he Hobey Baker Memorial Award is presented annually to the college hockey player who best exemplifies the qualities that Princeton University’s Hobey Baker himself demon- Tstrated as an athlete and as a servant of his country in the early 1900’s. Hobey Baker was a pure sportsman and despised foul play. As a player, he opened up the game with his speed and skills, setting new standards for the way the game was played. Prior to the announcement of the winner, there is an announcement of the Top 10 Finalists and then a Hobey ‘Hat Trick’ of the top three finalists. The first recipient of the award in 1981 – Neal Broten of Minnesota – was from the WCHA. Other Hobey Baker winners from the WCHA have been Tom Kurvers, D, UMD, 1984; Bill Watson, F, UMD, 1985; Tony Hrkac, F, UND, 1987; Robb Stauber, G, UM, 1988; Chris Marinucci, F, UMD, 1994; Brian Bonin, F, UM, 1996; Jordan Leopold, D, UM, 2002; Peter Sejna, F, CC, 2003; Junior Lessard, F, UMD, 2004; Marty Sertich, F, CC, 2005; Matt Carle, D, DU, 2006; and Ryan Duncan, F, UND, 2007. Duncan became the WCHA’s sixth consecutive Hobey winner and 13th overall. THE HOBEY BAKER STORY Hobey Baker had all the attributes of a fabulous athlete: a great physique, fantastic reflexes, instant coordination of hand and eye, iron discipline, blazing courage. But he was different. Hobey Baker was the college athlete supreme: The gentleman sportsman, the amateur in the pure sense, playing the game for the sport, who never fouled, despised publicity and refused professional offers.

Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-19477-8 - Dropping the Torch: Jimmy Carter, the Olympic Boycott, and the Cold War Nicholas Evan Sarantakes Excerpt More information introduction Miracle on Ice Mike Eruzione as the team captain stood on the platform, hand over his heart, with his Olympic gold medal hanging from his neck, as a series of cables attached to the roof of the arena pulled the U.S. flag in the air ahead of those of Finland and the Soviet Union. He was singing words to the “Star Spangled Banner,” leading the crowd in the song, as the music played during the medal ceremony. It is difficult to overstate what he and his nineteen teammates on the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team had done to reach this moment. Just in athletic terms, their victory was astonishing. They had defeated a Soviet team that had won the gold medal of the last four Olympiads. During that run, the goal differential between the Soviets and their opponents had been 175–44. After 1980, the Soviets would not lose to another U.S. team for another eleven years. In fact, they would not lose any game in international play for another five years.1 As impressive as the hockey team’s success was in athletic terms – and it was extraordinary – their gold medal was far more significant to the psyche of the nation. “It was what America needed in troubled times,” an official of the U.S. Amateur Hockey Association explained a few weeks later. Their win pro- duced “a release of emotion and national pride that swept a country searching for something to bolster its pride.”2 Their triumph was also of immense importance to the international Olympic movement.

Politics on Ice: The United States, the Soviet Union, and a Hockey Game in Lake Placid Donald E. During a snowy afternoon in Lake Placid, New York, on 22 February 1980, the US Men’s Hockey Team, coached by the legendary Herb Brooks, defeated the heavily favoured Soviet Union 4–3, setting the stage for the US gold medal victory against Finland. Considered a long shot for a medal before the XIIIth Winter Games began, the US Hockey Team captured the imagination and harnessed the spirit of an entire nation. • 2012/2013 ANNUAL REPORT USA HOCKEY Provides the Foundation
2012/2013 ANNUAL REPORT USA HOCKEY provides the foundation for the sport of ice hockey in America; helps young people become leaders, even Olympic heroes; and connects the game at every level while promoting a lifelong love of the sport. Key Partners in Hockey A YEAR WITH MUCH TO CELEBRATE The most exciting times in our organization are in front of us as hockey continues to evolve all across our great nation. The 2012-13 season added another chapter to the rich history of USA Hockey. It was a year that included significant accomplishment with so many reasons to celebrate. We were moved by the smiles on the faces of kids and parents found coast-to-coast in 2012-13 as the implementation of our player Ron DeGregorio development initiative – the American Development Model – continued in President earnest. Endorsed by the National Hockey League, U.S. Olympic Committee, International Ice Hockey Federation and College Hockey, Inc., to name a few, the ADM has – and will – continue to give kids of all ability levels the best chance to reach their full potential in a fun and safe environment. As Mike Richter, one of our nation’s most successful goaltenders and now a youth hockey parent recently said, “Why in the world would a kid want to play hockey if they’re not having fun?” At the heart of the ADM is fun, and Dave Ogrean that will result in kids staying in the game longer and ultimately being better Executive Director players. Coaches are the lifeblood of our organization and we’re proud to say President our coaching education program continues to be recognized as the gold Ron DeGregorio standard in amateur sports.
