Each calls the other into being. The world is a puzzling place. Like Alice in Wonderland, people rush to go nowhere, too many things don’t make sense, and the threat of losing one’s head is ever present. It seems as if humanity has fallen down the rabbit hole and cannot find a way out. Yet, there is hope. If we can understand how we got here and what keeps us here, we can go forward. Society is divided into two groups of people: a few who wield immense power and the rest who feel vary- ing degrees of powerlessness. As a result, conflicts over power dominate life. Between individuals, the struggle for power kills intimacy. On a social level, competition drives down living standards. On a global scale, the battle for dominance threatens human survival. Power over others and lack of power are both corrupting. However, power — the ability to control events — can also liberate. Power is not the problem; the problem is unequal access to power. For more than a hundred-thousand years, our ancestors lived in cooperative, power-sharing societies. This book explains how the rule of reciprocity was overthrown and how it can be re-established. My experience as a physician compelled me to write this book. As the sister of a disabled child, I thought that doctors had the power to end suffering, and I wanted that power. After I graduated from medical school, I learned how powerless doctors actually are. Most of my patients’ problems were rooted in family dynamics, financial difficulties, and conflicts at school and at work. I studied psychotherapy in the hope that combining mind and body skills would be more useful. It was — I could help people move from uncommon misery to common misery. The problems created by alienation, oppression, and exploitation remained beyond my control. After listening to thousands of people’s stories, I have concluded that social power is necessary for human health. Most people lack the happy, healthy, fulfilling lives they deserve because they are kept powerless and mistakenly accept this state of affairs as natural or self-inflicted. In fact,most human suffering is preventable. This book reveals what must be done. Part One explains that society does not arise from human nature. On the contrary, current social ar- rangements violate human nature. Part Two shows how power is divided by class. Part Three investigates how power and powerlessness are perpetuated. Part Four reveals how powerlessness can be transformed into power. Knowing that the material in this book would be controversial, unbelievable to some, I carefully refer- enced every fact, every quote, and every contentious statement. To my dismay, the final draft contained more than 1,400 references spanning 70 pages. To make the book shorter and more affordable, I cut out most of these references; however, I will be happy to provide specific references on request. A just world is possible. Human beings create society, and we can change it. The need for change is ur- gent. Everywhere, there is injustice, anguish, and anger. This book explains how society shapes people, how people shape society, and how powerlessness can be converted into the power to transform the world. ii | Part One What’s Going On? Many Americans, we know, are horrified by the posture of their government but seem to be helpless. Harold Pinter The 21st century is young and already drips with blood. Washington has launched wars against Afghanistan and Iraq and backed Israel to destroy Lebanon. When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, the most pow- erful government in the world abandoned its poor to die. Ordinary Americans have lost jobs, pensions, and health care, while oil profiteers reap billions in tax cuts. Secret prisons, systematic torture, and domestic spy- ing confirm the corruption at the heart of the system. Why is this happening? The usual explanations blame human nature, as if nothing can be done. The inability to change society is an extension of the powerlessness that most people feel every day at the hands of supervisors, bosses, and bureaucrats, at home, at school, in the market, on the street, and at work. How can justice be achieved when so many people feel powerless in so many ways? Do we have the world we deserve, or is there another explanation? Part One addresses these questions. • Chapter 1. Does Anybody Really Care provides evidence that people do care about one another. • Chapter 2. Compassion Isn’t Cost-Effective shows how capitalism blocks compassion. • Chapter 3. Who Needs a Heart When a Heart Can Be Broken explains how dissociation helps people en- dure what they cannot change. • Chapter 4. Nature’s Youngest Child reveals how capitalism prevents people from solving social problems. | 1 Chapter 1 Does Anybody Really Care? Bill Moyers recalls looking at photos of his grandchildren and thinking, We are stealing their future. Betraying their trust. Despoiling their world. And I ask myself: Why? Is it because we don’t care? Because we are greedy? Because we have lost our capacity for outrage, our ability to sustain indignation at injustice? What has happened to our moral imagination?1 Such questions demand answers. Every day, crowds of people stream past homeless beggars. Few respond to their pleas for help. One cold Christmas morning, I watched two men walk up to a bank machine. A homeless woman lay sleeping in front of it. They stepped over her to withdraw some money and, as they turned to leave, they stepped back over her again without interrupting their conversation. Events like these reinforce the belief that people are naturally selfish and that social problems result from “original sin” or hu- man nature. Is this true? Let’s examine the evidence. Are people heartless? A poster campaign to raise money for charity shows a half-naked toddler sitting in a pile of garbage with the caption, “How young do they have to be before we give a damn?” The poster implies that people are so indifferent to suffering that they must be shocked or shamed into caring.

It examines how Beijing’s growing presence is affecting political, economic, and security trends in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region. The bipartisan group was comprised of senior experts, former policymakers, and retired diplomats. India is likely to defer much-needed military modernization and maritime expansion into the Indian Ocean – which would impair its ability to compete strategically with China. • In contrast, China incurred only marginal material costs; it was probably more concerned with the prospect of continued deterioration in its relationship with India.

Chinese officials and media projected confidence that these goals would be completed despite the impact of COVID- 19. Achievements over the past year included new hardware and operational “firsts.” • Chinese media and officials note that there is much ‘unfinished business’ left for the PLA to accomplish. Major challenges include delayed reforms, outdated weapons and equipment, corruption in the officer corps and defense industry, human capital weaknesses, and the lack of updated operational doctrine. The PLA aspires to continue progress on these and other areas through 2035 and mid-century. • Chinese military operations in Asia in 2020 continued a careful balancing act of developing friendly relations with neighbors while pressing China’s territorial claims. "Once you gain access to the directory of user names and passwords, in minutes you can take over a network," said George Kurtz, worldwide chief technology officer for McAfee, a Silicon Valley computer security firm that has been working with more than half a dozen of the targeted companies. Kurtz and others said hackers are mounting ever more sophisticated and effective attacks that often begin with a ruse familiar to many computer users -- a seemingly innocuous link or attachment that admits malicious software. The attacks were publicized in January when Google, one of the world's most advanced tech firms, announced that intruders had penetrated its network and compromised valuable intellectual property. Google asserted that the attacks originated in China; Chinese officials say they are investigating. The New York Times reported on its Web site Monday that the Google theft included source code for a password system that controls access to almost all of the company's Web services. But the cyber-espionage campaign went far beyond Google, targeting companies with apparently strong intrusion- detection systems, including Adobe, Northrop Grumman and Yahoo, industry sources said.

He obtained his PhD in Environmental Sciences at the University of Barcelona (Spain). Introduction The present growth without precedent of the Chinese economy has modified its relative world position in various fields. This is particularly true of its scientific development, so much so that in the mass media, China is often presented as the “red dragon” that will one day gobble up the rest of the world. This brief paper tries to evaluate the strength of the scientific sector and its potential to consolidate into what I have described elsewhere (1) as an “industrial network”, that is to say, towards a structure that is characterized in the capitalist countries by its strong bonds and synergies between the economic actors of the nation, its military, its agents (such as domestic multinational), and the academic and research world (e.g. universities, institutes of research, etc…). High-tech sweatshops or indigenous scientific development? It is well know that China is the factory of the world. Indeed, it is currently the world’s biggest OEM (original equipment manufacturer). Exports of Chinese high- tech goods have grown from 0.9% of the world production in 1980 to 5.5% in 1999 and 8.7% in 2001. In 2004, China overtook the United States as the world’s largest exporter of a broad range of electronic goods, including computers, mobile phones and digital cameras.

    Josef Joffe The Default Power Foreign Affairs, Sept/Oct 2009 The False Prophecy of America's Decline EVERY TEN years, it is decline time in the United States. In the late 1950s, it was the Sputnik shock, followed by the "missile gap" trumpeted by John F. Kennedy in the 1960 presidential campaign. A decade later, Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger sounded the dirge over bipolarity, predicting a world of five, rather than two, global powers. At the end of the 1970s, Jimmy Carter's "malaise" speech invoked "a crisis of confidence" that struck "at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will." A decade later, academics such as the Yale historian Paul Kennedy predicted the ruin of the United States, driven by overextension abroad and profligacy at home. The United States was at risk of "imperial overstretch," Kennedy wrote in 1987, arguing that "the sum total of the United States' global interests and obligations is nowadays far larger than the country's power to defend them all simultaneously." But three years later, Washington dispatched 600,000 soldiers to fight the first Iraq war--without reinstating the draft or raising taxes. The only price of "overstretch" turned out to be the mild recession of 1991. Declinism took a break in the 1990s. The United States was enjoying a nice run after the suicide of the Soviet Union, and Japan, the economic powerhouse of the 1980s, was stuck in its "lost decade" of stagnation and so no longer stirred U.S. paranoia with its takeover of national treasures such as Pebble Beach and Rockefeller Center.
