Download PDF Booklet www.zerecords.com UNDERCOVER Adapting someone else’s composition is a heady challenge and an almost obli- gatory step in an artist’s career but one which is not without risk in certain cases. The stimulation may come from a sort of gauntlet of style being thrown down or from the great pleasure of reworking, reviewing a work that one has loved. Whatever the trigger, adaptation is always a test of an artist’s taste and the limits of his or her creativity and talent even. Certain new versions become even more famous than their originals, pushing the initial artist into obscurity. A recent example of this is the adaptation of Torn by NATALIE IMBRUGLIA which immediately became an international hit. But who remembers the original ver- sion by EDNASWAP on their “Wacko Magneto” album? Covering is often an opportunity to play with the style of a composition, which proves that the original was a good song and that with the injection of different talent, it can be adapted to any given style. A famous example of this is the exceptional adventure of « My Way ». It was written by French man Jacques Revaux under the title « For Me », it was then presented to Claude François who adapted it with Gilles Thibaut to produce « Comme d’Habitude ». The song was relatively successful in France in 1967 but then PAUL ANKA heard it and adapted it into English two years later under the title of « My Way ». He offered the song to « THE VOICE », Mister FRANK SINATRA himself. This was the start of the song’s fabulous international career. Over one thousand versions of « My Way » have since been recorded, the best known being those by EL- VIS PRESLEY, EDDIE COCHRAN, TOM JONES, THE PLATTERS, LUCIANO PAVAROTTI, RAY CHARLES, NINA HAGEN… the version by NINA SIMONE is, in my opinion, one of the best covers while SID VICIOUS’ atomic production perfectly illustrates the theory of a good song being adaptable to any style. All the artists that record for ZE Records have made at least one cover version. It was a natural step forward to bring them together on this compilation. COATI to my Head, also interpreted famously by Billie Holiday, her version though MUNDI has adapted Tropical Hot Dog Night, one of the most joyous songs ever remains fresh and visionary even. The newcomers to ZE in 2004 also rose to written by Don Van Vliet for his band CAPTAIN BEEFHEART. RUEBEN BLADES the challenge with pleasure. Miss OD backed by Gentleman’s League pour is present as a Latino guest star. ALAN VEGA pays a tribute to GENE VINCENT out a very smooth version of Dindi by Jobim, originally interpreted by Astrud with his version of Be Bop a Lua. The historic recordings of the song Desafinado: Bossa Nova development and change in the international scene1 Liliana Harb Bollos Universidade Federal de Goiás, Brasil [email protected] Fernando A. de A. Corrêa Faculdade Santa Marcelina, Brasil [email protected] Carlos Henrique Costa Universidade Federal de Goiás, Brasil [email protected] 1. Introduction Considered the “turning point” (Medaglia, 1960, p. 79) in modern popular Brazi- lian music due to the representativeness and importance it reached in the Brazi- lian music scene in the subsequent years, João Gilberto’s LP, Chega de saudade (1959, Odeon, 3073), was released in 1959 and after only a short time received critical and public acclaim. The musicologist Brasil Rocha Brito published an im- portant study on Bossa Nova in 1960 affirming that “never before had a happe- ning in the scope of our popular music scene brought about such an incitement of controversy and polemic” (Brito, 1993, p. 17). Before the Chega de Saudade recording, however, in February of 1958, João Gilberto participated on the LP Can- ção do Amor Demais (Festa, FT 1801), featuring the singer Elizete Cardoso. The recording was considered a sort of presentation recording for Bossa Nova (Bollos, 2010), featuring pieces by Vinicius de Moraes and Antônio Carlos Jobim, including arrangements by Jobim. On the recording, João Gilberto interpreted two tracks on guitar: “Chega de Saudade” (Jobim/Moraes) and “Outra vez” (Jobim). The groove that would symbolize Bossa Nova was recorded for the first time on this LP with ¹ The first version of this article was published in the Anais do V Simpósio Internacional de Musicologia (Bollos, 2015), in which two versions of “Desafinado” were discussed.

  • Outsiders' Music: Progressive Country, Reggae
CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s Chapter Outline I. The Outlaws: Progressive Country Music A. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, mainstream country music was dominated by: 1. the slick Nashville sound, 2. hardcore country (Merle Haggard), and 3. blends of country and pop promoted on AM radio. B. A new generation of country artists was embracing music and attitudes that grew out of the 1960s counterculture; this movement was called progressive country. 1. Inspired by honky-tonk and rockabilly mix of Bakersfield country music, singer-songwriters (Bob Dylan), and country rock (Gram Parsons) 2. Progressive country performers wrote songs that were more intellectual and liberal in outlook than their contemporaries’ songs. 3. Artists were more concerned with testing the limits of the country music tradition than with scoring hits. 4. The movement’s key artists included CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s a) Willie Nelson, b) Kris Kristopherson, c) Tom T. Hall, and d) Townes Van Zandt. 5. These artists were not polished singers by conventional standards, but they wrote distinctive, individualist songs and had compelling voices. 6. They developed a cult following, and progressive country began to inch its way into the mainstream (usually in the form of cover versions). a) “Harper Valley PTA” (1) Original by Tom T.
