Issue 30: Women in the Medieval Church Women in the Medieval Church: Did You Know? Jeannette L. Angell is a doctoral candidate in history and liturgics at the School of Theology, Boston University. The first autobiography in the English language was written by a Christian woman, Margery Kempe, who lived in the early 1400s. In the early Middle Ages, it was not uncommon for an abbess (the female head of a religious community) to rule “double” communities of both men and women. One who did so was Hilda of Whitby (614–680), whose abbey became famous for its learning and libraries. Five future bishops were trained in her community, and kings and rulers sought her advice. Many women joined the Crusades. They began to be required to gain their husbands’ consent before leaving. Christian women often corresponded with—and gave advice to—the most prominent leaders of their day. Heloise (better known for her relationship with famous philosopher Peter Abelard) maintained a significant exchange with Peter the Venerable, the influential abbot of Cluny. The two discussed theology and spirituality at length. Anselm, later Archbishop of Canterbury (1093–1109), corresponded with Queen Matilda on matters of religion. Of all the recognized saints between 500 and 1200, about 15 percent were women. Some Anglo-Saxon queens appointed bishops. Queen Emma of Normandy, one of the most powerful people in England in the early eleventh century, clearly did so. So did Edith, wife of Edward the Confessor, the English king who built Westminster Abbey. Brigid of Ireland was said to have been consecrated a bishop. -

Metaphor and Metamorphosis in the Ovide moralisé and Christine de Pizan’s Mutacion de Fortune Suzanne Conklin Akbari Although it may seem hard to believe, there was a time when the works of Christine de Pizan were not widely read. These days, any survey of medieval literature that omits her works would be considered conspicu- ous and unusual. In part, of course, the awakening of interest in the writings of Christine is the result of a desire, which developed first during the early 1970s, to seek out women writers who might afford a different perspective on the familiar territory of medieval culture. Not surprisingly, the work of Christine’s that is almost invariably assigned to students is the Livre de la cité des dames,orBook of the City of Ladies.This book is not only authored by a woman, but is also explicitly devoted to the effort to promote the reputation of women in world history; as a classroom text, therefore, this is what we might call “hitting two birds with one stone.” When other selections from the writings of Christine de Pizan are provided, they are almost always the autobiographical passages that appear in her LivredelamutaciondeFortuneand in her Avision-Christine.1 Once again, the life of the medieval woman – here, Christine herself – is the focus of study, rather than the broader cultural milieu in which the works were produced. This article includes a close examination of one of these famous passages: namely, Christine’s autobiographical description of how she was transformed, at the hands of Fortune, from a woman into a man. -

Mann: Christine de Pizan and Sacred History Christine de Pizan and Sacred History Vickie Mann Indiana University Southeast MLS Student Interdisciplinary Studies Christine de Pizan was an author living in 15th century France whose writings highlighted the courageous actions of women that helped to strengthen their society. Living under the shadow of misogynist writers, she illuminated the female’s right to equality long before other French writers would broach the subject. Particularly enlightening in this respect is her book The City of Women, presenting the positive attributes of women. Globally speaking, Jeffrey Richards has interpreted the book as a treatise on religious doctrine. I will seek to demonstrate what I believe to be her true intent: to lay a foundation of equality of the sexes for future generations to debate. My goal is to refute, as an interpretive error, Richards’s vision of The City of Women as something entirely different: an attempt to “assign eschatological significance both to current events and to the history of women” (15), and as such to establish The City of Women as a metaphor for redemption. -

Far from signalling the obsolescence of feminist investigations into the Middle Ages, the posing of such a question reflects the extent to which feminist scholarship, and in particular the study of medieval women, has consolidated its position within the larger field of Medieval Studies. -

Books as a Source of Medical Education for Women in the Middle Ages MONICA H. ABSTRACT The development of philosophical medicine in the high and late Middle Ages brought with it a powerful association of medical knowledge with the written word. To possess books, or at least to have access to books, was both a prerequisite for and a symbol of the kind of theoretical learning that distinguished the learned practitioner from the empiric. This study examines evidence for women’s access to medical books, raising the question of what difference gender made. I argue that, for the most part, women did not own medical books, whether they were laywomen or religious. I suggest that this was largely due to the limits on advanced education for women, a factor that would have effected both laywomen and nuns. Chism, Co-Chair Professor Lowell Gallagher, Co-Chair This dissertation uncovers an overlooked history of women’s utopian thought that has its foundations in the medieval period. Challenging scholarly narratives that position Thomas More’s Utopia (1516) as the foundation of utopian thought, I argue that medieval and early modern women’s writing produced and/or read in English contexts engaged in unrecognized forms of utopianism that reemerge in contemporary conversations about gender and sexuality. I thus trace an earlier lineage of what Mary Louis Pratt calls “feminotopias,” idealized worlds of female self-realization and social harmony, from the fifteenth to mid-seventeenth centuries. But I also expand Pratt’s notion of feminotopia by showing how writers from French author Christine de Pizan to religious leader Mary Ward extended utopia beyond its narrow generic definition as an ideal world into a heuristic for imagining the world otherwise. Through such utopian thinking, women generated gynocentric models of identity, friendship and community. Writing at moments of social and political tensions, the women in my project collectively imagine ways for communities to negotiate difference— between individual women, between the past and future, humans and nature, and religious and ii secular life.
