Imogen Volkofsky ii Abstract This thesis deals with the representation of prayer in literary texts from early Anglo- Saxon England, investigating the role of reading in the life of prayer and the various ways in which literary texts from the eighth and ninth centuries attest to cultures of prayer in this period. Chapter One looks at writings about saints, especially Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People and a number of early saints’ lives, to identify the features most common to early Anglo-Saxon prayer. Prayer, in these texts, is most frequently ascetic and extra-liturgical, with an emphasis on the night vigil as the most important form of private devotion and a keen interest in the sanctification of time and space through prayer and communion with the saints. The representation of prayer in these texts represents both ideal and reality and, as this chapter argues, part of the purpose of these texts was to teach people how to pray. Chapter Two looks to the prayers of the ninth-century Mercian tradition, preserved in four private prayer books: Cambridge, University Library Ll.I.10 (The Book of Cerne), B.L., Harley 2965 (The Book of Nunnaminster), B.L., Royal 2.A.XX (The Royal Prayer Book), B.L., Harley 7653 (The Harley Fragment). This chapter investigates the way in which these books encourage meditative engagement with the Gospels through reading. These books focus on penance, the person of Christ, the Incarnation, the Passion and Judgment, themes that also emerge in Old English literary volumes. Chapter Three turns to the Old English poems of Junius 11, suggesting that prayer is central to the purpose of Junius 11’s construction. This chapter argues that the manuscript as a whole is centred on the theme of moral behaviour and the appropriate response to God, on the one hand, and the rejection of God and judgment, on the other. Thus, the manuscript frequently juxtaposes the prayers of the Old Testament figures and, in Christ and Satan, the prayers of the saints with the ‘anti-prayers’ of God’s enemies. In this way, the volume is preoccupied with the contemplation of judgment as well as with redemption. Furthermore, the volume bears witness to some aspects of the practice of prayer contemporary with the composition of each poem. Finally, Chapter Four dicusses the Old English poem The Dream of the Rood in light of the ascetic, penitential and iii Christological focus of eighth- and ninth-century Anglo-Saxon prayers discussed so far in this thesis. This chapter argues that The Dream of the Rood is a poem about prayer and that its setting draws on conventional descriptions of the night vigil, which are discussed at length in Chapter One, and that the visionary experience of the dreamer represents a sustained poetic reflection on the kinds of meditative contemplation to which the Mercian prayer books bear witness. iv Acknowledgements I would like to thank the University of Sydney and the Australian government for their financial support of this research.     ABSTRACT Jesus Christ Warrior-King: Analysis of the Old English Poem Christ and Satan Hannah L. Schwartz Director: Ginger Hanchey, Ph.D. The Old English poem Christ and Satan is an interesting and important work of literature, but various circumstances have left it without the widespread scholarly attention or fame of other Old English poems. This thesis begins by demonstrating the ways in which Christ and Satan makes use of traditional, Germanic-heroic literary practices to tell its distinctly Christian story and how this intermingling of traditions casts Christ into several distinctly heroic roles within the poem, including that of the warrior- king. Subsequent chapters compare specific scenes from the narrative of the poem, those of Christ’s descent into hell and his temptation by Satan in the desert, to similar scenes from other poems in the Old English and Old Saxon poetic canons. These comparisons are made in search of increased understanding of both the poetic inner-workings of Christ and Satan and how and why it was composed within its unique historical, literary, and religious context. Genesis A, Genesis B, Elene and Juliana explore the figure of Satan with re- course to shared imagery that goes down to the patristic tradition of early medieval church as well as to the Germanic poetic tradition. The representations of the devil that found their way to old english poetic compositions are pervasively influenced by the early medieval redemption theories on the one hand. on the other, the poems in questions draw upon the formulaic exile theme that they share with a number of other old english poems, like The Seafarer and The Wanderer, to counterpoint their central soteriological themes. The devil is not only often evoked in old english poetry, but also constitutes one of the most recurrent heroes in a number of poems written in anglo-Saxon england. These poems fall into two groups. The first group is made up of the biblical epics, which present Satan’s fall and exile from heaven. in this group of poems, Satan is invariably depicted as a hero, if not actually an anti-hero, and the poets who composed these works devoted much attention to characterising Satan in typically heroic terms. The second group is formed by hagiographic poems, especially those belonging to the Cynewulf group.

  • Abstract Old English Elegies: Language and Genre
    ABSTRACT OLD ENGLISH ELEGIES: LANGUAGE AND GENRE Stephanie Opfer, PhD Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2017 Dr. Susan E. Deskis, Director The Old English elegies include a group of poems found in the Exeter Book manuscript that have traditionally been treated as a single genre due to their general sense of lament – The Wanderer, The Seafarer, The Riming Poem, Deor, Wulf and Eadwacer, The Wife’s Lament, Resignation, Riddle 60, The Husband’s Message, and The Ruin. In this study, I conduct a linguistic stylistic analysis of all ten poems using systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and a variety of computational and linguistic tools: Lexomics, Voyant, and Microsoft Excel. My results focus on three characteristics of the poetry: (1) the similarity of the linguistic style within the poems, measured by Lexomics; (2) an oscillation between first- and third-person clausal Themes, measured using SFL analysis; and (3) themes in the lexical categorization, measured through detailed lexical analysis. In the end, my methodology creates a new and more nuanced definition of the elegy: a relatively short reflective or dramatic poem, similar in style and content to other elegiac poems, that alternates between first- and third-person perspectives and includes (1) themes of exile; (2) imagery of water or the sea, the earth, and/or the weather; and (3) words expressing both joy and sorrow. Ultimately, I argue for a recategorization of only five poems as “Old English elegies”: The Wanderer, The Seafarer, Wulf and Eadwacer, The Wife’s Lament, and The Riming Poem.     volume 2 - 2006 Bede and the Augustine’s Oak conferences: implications for Anglo-British ecclesiastical interaction in early Anglo-Saxon England Martin Grimmer Abstract In Bede’s representation of relations between the British church and the Roman church of the Anglo-Saxons, one of the defining events concerns Augustine of Canterbury’s two meetings, c 602-604, with a group of British bishops at ‘Augustine’s Oak’ on the border of the West Saxons and the Hwicce. The Augustine’s Oak conferences are the first of Bede’s ecclesiastical ‘set pieces’ which marshal Roman against British and Irish Columban practice. Bede is the only source for these meetings, and because of his distance both in time and in location from the events, his description has been labelled as an ‘ecclesiastical saga’ of uncertain authenticity. However, there are indications that Bede’s account was not simply an imaginative reconstruction. Bede appears to have relied on both Anglo-Saxon and British sources in his rendering of the meetings. Although some of the details may be dubious, he reveals a plausible picture of ecclesiastical interaction between Anglo-Saxons and Britons, which saw the Britons branded as schismatic by the Roman church, and which memorialised a pattern of distrust and isolation. The aim of this paper is to analyse Bede’s presentation of the events surrounding the Augustine’s Oak conferences and the implications for Anglo- British ecclesiastical interaction during the early Anglo-Saxon period.
