Virtual Musical Field Trip with Maestro Andrew Crust
YOUR PASSPORT TO A VIRTUAL MUSICAL FIELD TRIP WITH MAESTRO ANDREW CRUST Premier Education Partner Za The Conductor Today, you met Andrew Crust, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s Assistant Conductor. He joined the VSO this season in September of 2019. He grew up in Kansas City, and his main instrument is the trumpet. He studied music education and conducting, and has worked with orchestras in Canada, the United States, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Chile, and many other exotic places. The conductor keeps the orchestra in time and together. The conductor serves as a messenger for the composer. It is their responsibility to understand the music and convey it through movements so clearly that the musicians in the orchestra understand it perfectly. Those musicians can then send a unified vision of the music out to the audience. Conductors usually beat time with their right hand. This leaves their left hand free to show the various instruments when they have entries (when they start playing) or to show them to play louder or softer. Most conductors have a stick called a “baton”. It makes it easier for people at the back of large orchestras or choirs to see the beat. Other conductors prefer not to use a baton. A conductor stands on a small platform called a “rostrum”. To be a good conductor is not easy. It is not just a question of giving a steady beat. A good conductor has to know the music extremely well so that they can hear any wrong notes. They need to be able to imagine exactly the sound they want the orchestra to make. -

Geoffrey Brown 3 This thesis is dedicated to Agnès Calatayud, an inspirational teacher, who reconnected me to French cinema after a long carence, and who, crucially, first introduced me to the films of Claire Denis. 4 Abstract This thesis argues that the interest which the films of Claire Denis display in the ever-shifting modes of relations between people is illustrated through analysis of how music is used throughout her corpus of feature films. Denis draws on an extremely eclectic palette of musical styles, and the thesis proposes that these varying musical modalities are central to her treatment of relational issues, as are the ways in which she deploys her chosen musical selections. -

101 TIPS for WOMEN TRAVELERS ® ® SM Since 1978 1 “ I am not the same having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” —Mary Anne Radmacher Artist & author A woman who has dedicated herself to inspiring and celebrating greatness in women, Mary Anne Radmacher is herself inspired by travel, as these words show. 2 Dear Traveler, When did travel first touch your life? For me, travel has been at my core since I was a little girl, sneaking a look at travel books under the covers when I was supposed to be sleeping. In the many years since, I’ve been privileged to visit countries on every continent, meeting wonderful people along the way. Today, my husband Alan and I own and co-chair the Grand Circle family of travel companies: Overseas Adventure Travel, Grand Circle Cruise Line, and Grand Circle Travel (see page 84 to learn more about our different types of travel). And I continue to realize that we can always learn from others when it comes to travel experience and advice. In these pages, you’ll find the best-of-the-best tips offered by OAT and Grand Circle female travelers, our online Travel Forum and Facebook followers, and associates and guides around the world. We are so grateful to all who contributed thoughts and ideas. I hope that this edition of 101 Tips for Women Travelers gives even the most experienced travelers new ideas for making the most of their trips. At the back of this volume, you’ll also find a number of resources that can help you prolong the joy of travel, including travel-related books, films, and Internet resources and apps. -
STYLE and IDEA
STYLE and IDEA by ARNOLD SCHOENBERG PHILOSOPHICAL LIBRARY New York CoPYRIGHT, 1950, BY PHILOSOPHICAL LIBRARY, INC. 15 EAsT 40TH STREET, NEw YoRK, N. Y. Printed in the United States of America editor's foreword ARNOLD ScHOENBERG, as an author, has his own personality and ideas, not only in German but also in English. Several of the essays now composing Style and Idea were originally written in German. In translating these, I have, at the author's wish, adhered as literally to the original style as English usage allows. Thus there should be a certain con sistency of expression between these and the later essays which were written in English but which still bear the earmarks of Schoenberg's individual Ger man style. Schoenberg himself has elucidated his attitude towards his own manner of writing in English as follows: ". I do not plan to hide the fact that I am not born in this language and I do not want to parade adorned by stylistic merits of another person." Obe dience to this viewpoint has governed editorial ac tivities throughout. It may also be stated that, of set purpose, no at tempt has been made to eliminate any possible in consistencies in the points of view expressed in the different essays. It should be remembered that they represent the product of nearly forty years of Schoenberg's intellectual activity, and hence reflect the growth and development of his ideas during that time. What they do not present is a fixed dog ma and no such thing should be sought for in them. -
Women Singer-Songwriters As Exemplary Actors: the Music of Rape and Domestic Violence
Women Singer-Songwriters as Exemplary Actors: The Music of Rape and Domestic Violence KATHANNE W. GREENE At the 2016 Oscars, Lady Gaga, joined onstage by fifty rape survivors, performed the song “Til It Happens to You.” The Oscar-nominated song by Lady Gaga and Diane Warren was written for The Hunting Ground, a documentary film about campus sexual assault. Over thirty-one million people viewed the Oscar performance, which brought some in the audience to tears, and the video on Vevo has received over twenty-nine million views with another twenty-eight million views on YouTube. The film, video, and performance are the result of a growing political and social movement by young high school and college women to force schools, universities, and colleges to vigorously respond to rape and sexual harassment on campus. In response to complaints filed by more and more young women, the Obama Administration and the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) in the Department Education began investigating claims that schools, colleges, and universities were not actively and adequately responding to claims of sexual assault and harassment despite passage of the Clery Act of 1990. The Clery Act requires colleges and universities to report data on crime on campus, provide support and accommodations to survivors, and establish written policies and procedures for the handling of campus crime.1 Since 2011, the OCR has expanded its efforts to address sexual assault on campuses as violations of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination -
