d WHAT WE THINK ABOUT WHEN WE THINK ABOUT THOMAS JEFFERSON Todd Estes Thomas Jefferson is America’s most protean historical figure. His meaning is ever-changing and ever-changeable. And in the years since his death in 1826, his symbolic legacy has varied greatly. Because he was literally present at the creation of the Declaration of Independence that is forever linked with him, so many elements of subsequent American life—good and bad—have always attached to Jefferson as well. For a quarter of a century—as an undergraduate, then a graduate student, and now as a professor of early American his- tory—I have grappled with understanding Jefferson. If I have a pretty good handle on the other prominent founders and can grasp the essence of Washington, Madison, Hamilton, Adams and others (even the famously opaque Franklin), I have never been able to say the same of Jefferson. But at least I am in good company. Jefferson biographer Merrill Peterson, who spent a scholarly lifetime devoted to studying him, noted that of his contemporaries Jefferson was “the hardest to sound to the depths of being,” and conceded, famously, “It is a mortifying confession but he remains for me, finally, an impenetrable man.” This in the preface to a thousand page biography! Pe- terson’s successor as Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor at Mr. Jefferson’s University of Virginia, Peter S. Onuf, has noted the difficulty of knowing how to think about Jefferson 21 once we sift through the reams of evidence and confesses “as I always do when pressed, that I am ‘deeply conflicted.’”1 The more I read, learn, write, and teach about Jefferson, the more puzzled and conflicted I remain, too. -

The Founders and Their World: histories (and historians) of the new republic History 441 Spring 2014 Thursdays 1:30-4:20 Shelby Cullum Davis Center Seminar Room (G-14, Dickinson Hall) Alec Dun 137 Dickinson Hall [email protected] Office hours: Mondays, 1:30-3:30 (use WASS to schedule) Overview: This seminar allows students to dig deeply into American history during the early national period, with a particular focus on the period between 1789 and 1808. This is a vibrant and crucial timespan, one in which the ideals of the recent Revolution met the realities of statecraft, when the social institutions of British America were strained through a new national American idiom, and when many of the issues that would prove vital to subsequent American history first cropped up. To explore it, we will read and talk about a diverse array of issues, ranging from the formation of the rules governing debate in the first Congress and George Washington’s social schedule to flaps over Alexander Hamilton’s Whiskey tax and the John Jay’s Anglo-American treaty. As we go, we will assess developments such as the American reaction to the French and Haitian Revolutions and the machinations of foreign diplomats and the outbreak of a little-known naval war in the Caribbean. Through it all, we will witness the birth of partisan politics and the so-called “first party system,” figuring out the divisions and developments and marking its workings in Presidential and Congressional elections. In sum, we will steep ourselves in the political culture of the new nation. -

Using eighty-one semi-randomly and diversely selected founders as case subjects to examine and trace how individual, group, and collective founder interest evolved over time, this thesis uniquely analyzes 20th and 21st Century Revolutionary American scholarship on the founders by dividing it five distinct periods, with the most recent period coinciding with “founders chic.” Using data analysis and topic modeling, this thesis engages three primary historiographic questions: What founders are most prevalent in Revolutionary scholarship? Are social, cultural, and “from below” histories increasing? And if said histories are increasing, are the “New Founders,” individuals only recently considered vital to the era, posited by these histories outnumbering the Top Seven Founders (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine) in founder scholarship? The thesis concludes that the Top Seven Founders have always dominated founder dissertation scholarship, that social, cultural, and “from below” histories are increasing, and that social categorical and “New Founder” histories are steadily increasing as Top Seven Founder studies are slowly decreasing, trends that may shift the Revolutionary America field away from the Top Seven Founders in future years, but is not yet significantly doing so. -

Dr. Segers SEMINAR IN POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY Fall 2018 21:790:408 CITIZENSHIP AND EQUALITY IN AMERICAN POLITICAL THOUGHT Tues. eve The United States was founded as a republic, to be governed by a patriotic, virtuous citizenry. But in 1776 and 1787, citizenship was restricted and political equality was circumscribed. Slaves, women, native peoples, and some religious minorities were excluded from citizenship or denied basic political rights such as the right to vote. Despite the emphasis of the Declaration of Independence on fundamental, inalienable rights, the country’s founders rationalized the denial of rights to these groups. This course examines three examples of such denial of rights. First, we consider slavery and its legacy of racial segregation and violence---a fundamental flaw in the character of the new nation. We will read Frederick Douglass’ narrative of his life as a slave in order to get a renewed sense of the cruelty and deprivation slaves faced. We shall also consider the anti-slavery reflections of the Framers and what they proposed as a solution to the dilemma of slavery. We shall see how later political leaders (presidents) such as Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson sought to mitigate the after-effects of slavery and end racial discrimination. Second, the course considers the status of women in 1776 and the long struggle for political equality and the right to vote. In addition to the suffrage movement, we will review the struggle of Second Wave Feminists who in the last 50 years used legal cases to challenge sexual discrimination and harassment in the workplace. -

Office hours: Tuesday and Thursday 11-noon, and by appointment. 369B RR; 273-2799 [email protected] Thomas Jefferson is an ideal focus for discussions of the range of subjects that fascinated him, from gardening to food, wine, women, education, politics, philosophy, architecture, and plantation management. He provides an exquisite example of Enlightenment culture during the age of revolutions, and of a Founding Father who, as Secretary of State, Vice President, and President attempted to implement the revolutionary and constitutional principles on which the United States was founded. His private correspondence and public papers, his published writings and private musings, give access to Jefferson’s inner landscape as well as the world in which he lived. Through films, non-fiction and fiction, and primary source documents relating to case studies—The Declaration of Independence and its contrast to Thomas Paine’s Common Sense; the Burr Conspiracy; and Jefferson’s relationship with his slave Sally Hemings—we will explore historical research and interpretation, both our own and that of other historians. In particular, we will look at some of the ways that historical research can go wrong, and how historical writing is always a reflection of perspectives rather than of gathered facts, of interpretations rather than recovery, of creativity rather than objective engagement with sources. Your grades will be based on attendance; active, knowledgeable participation in class discussions; and three papers that you will re-write after the first drafts are returned to you. -

The first,Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow, takes as its starting point the terrible injustice of the Supreme Court ruling in the Dred Scott case that no black person— free or enslaved—could ever be a U.S. citizen. The exhibition traces the story of African Americans’ struggle for citizenship, including not only the right to enjoy legal protections and privileges but also the right to be accepted and to feel safe. The second exhibition, Harry Potter: A History of Magic, draws on the global phenomenon of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels while dramatizing the historical context indispensable to the books’ success. Both exhibitions underscore the importance of institutions like ours, whose great repositories enable a better understanding of the past as they illuminate the present. Reflecting these exhibitions’ themes, our Bernard and Irene Schwartz Distinguished Speakers Series features discussions of citizenship, race, history, and law, with speakers including Eric Foner, Harold Holzer, U.S. Senator Doug Jones, Martha Jones, Randall Kennedy, Edna Greene Medford, Manisha Sinha, Brent Staples, and Sean Wilentz. The Mathew “Mike” Gladstein Lecture in Biography features New-York Historical Trustee David Blight in conversation with Eddie Glaude Jr. on Frederick Douglass. For Harry Potter, our Schwartz Series features Jim Dale, the narrator and voice of all of the Harry Potter characters in the American audiobooks. -

The American Founding and the Culture Wars Alan Gibson California State University, Chico In March, 2003, led by Marguerite Talley-Hughes, three teachers at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Berkeley, California spearheaded an effort to change the name of the school where they taught. Teachers at the school, the petition sent to the school board calling for change argued, had become “increasingly uncomfortable to work at a site whose name honors a slaveholder.”1 Jefferson’s wealth, political power, and prominence in American history were secured, Talley-Hughes argued, “because he owned slaves, not in spite of that fact.” Jefferson used the “threat of physical violence” to elicit forced labor from slaves. He also advertised rewards for the capture of his runaway slaves, ordered slaves flogged, and sold them away from their families.
