AWARDS INTERNATIONAL AWARDS • Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions made in the field of Kala-azar (Visceral Leishmaniasis) Research, at the 6th World Leishmaniasis Congress held under the aegis of DNDi, a WHO backed organization, on 20th May 2017, at Toledo old capital of Spain. Three persons were selected and invited for this award, Dr. C. P. Thakur from Asian Continent, Dr. Rahman from African Continent and Dr. Rio from the Continent of Europe. Dr. Rio died 10 days before the award was given and his son got the award. Dr. C. P. Attended 53rd Annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTMH) held at Miami, Florida, USA from 7th – 11th Nov., 2004 and received "Outstanding Clinical Investigator Award for advancement of Paromomycin as Clinical trial in VL cases in Bihar" by the Institute for One World Health (iOWH), San Francisco, USA 4. Attended Principal Investigators meeting of Paromomycin phase IV drug trial, organized by iOWH, San Francisco, USA in Atlanta from 12-15 Nov. 2006. 5. Dr. C. P. Thakur, as Chairman of the Balaji Utthan Sansthan participated in the conference of 55th American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, held at Atlanta, USA and delivered a lecture on treatment of kala-azar. (12-16 November 2007). 6. Dr. C. P. Thakur, as Chairman of the Balaji Utthan Sansthan, participated in the conference of 56th American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, held at Philadelphia USA and gave a presentation on the treatment of kala-azar and co- chaired a Session on Treatment of Leishmaniasis. (04-08 November 2007). 7. He also participated in Principal Investigators meeting of Miltefosine, at Philadelphia, USA which was held under the auspices of World Health Organization, Geneva and reviewed the progress of research work done on miltefosine in India, Bangladesh and Nepal in the treatment of PKDL, 7th Nov. 2007 at Philadelphia, USA. 8. Attended “Workshop on kala-azar control” which was held from 8th to 16th June 2009 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The workshop was organized by the ICDDR, B and was jointly supported by the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Disease (TDR), and GTZ-Germany. 9. Attended Third Meeting of the Regional Technical Advisory Group (RTAG) on Elimination of Kala-azar at Dhaka, Bangladesh, 8-11 December 2009. 10. Attended as member, a WHO sponsored meeting held at Kathmandu on 30th October to 02nd November 2006. This Second Regional Technical Advisory Group (RTAG) meeting was on Elimination of Kala-azar. 11. Attended as member, a South East Asia WHO sponsored meeting at Kathmandu in July 2007 to review the situation of kala-azar in Bihar, Bangladesh and Nepal and a plan was formulated to eliminate kala-azar from this region. Members from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, WHO Geneva WHO Delhi, England and United States attended this meeting. 12. Attended First meeting of the WHO (South East Asia) of the Regional Technical Advisory group on Kala-azar which was held on 20-23 December 2004 at New Delhi. This meeting discussed the steps which will be taken in implementation of elimination of kala-azar from India, Nepal and Bangladesh. 13. Attended Meeting at Kathmandu from 12-15 July 2011 of the Regional Technical Advisory Group on elimination of Kala-azar from India, Nepal and Bangladesh. 14. Attended Meeting at Bhutan from 17-19 September 2013 of the Regional Technical Advisory Group on elimination of Kala-azar. 15. Attended Meeting at Italy on Workshop on Leishmaniasis Vaccine on 18 Nov. 2013 at Catania, Italy. 16. Attended Meeting at New Delhi on March 2014 to formulate Regional Strategic framework for elimination of Kala-azar from South East Asia. 17. Attended Meeting at New Delhi on 25th to 27th March, 2015 to formulate Regional Strategic framework for elimination of Kala-azar from South East Asia. 18. Attended Meeting of Dr.J.C.Ray Oration for the year 2015 on 9-10th of April, 2015 at CSIR-IICB, Kolkata. NATIONAL AWARDS FROM GOVT. Seal Award, Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI), for outstanding Public Health Work, 2001 as a Professor Emeritus in Patna Medical College. • Honorary fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India), 2001 as a Emeritus Professor of Medicine & Social worker. • Honorary Fellow, Indian Association of Epidemiologist 2001. • B. He was instrumental in the field of Kala-azar. • Ranbaxy Research Award in Medical Science (Clinical) for outstanding contribution towards Kala-azar Research, Ranbaxy-2004 as a research worker in a major health problem of country organizing convocation after a gap of 16 years. • Life Time Achievement Award, HIV Congress-2008, Mumbai. 5. Still working for elimination of kala-azar and tackling social problem of Bihar. • Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha 2008 - 2014 • Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, 2014 – 2020 CABINET MINISTER • On 22nd Nov, 1999 became Union Cabinet Minister for Water Resource, Government of India. Organized water resources department fought for the maximum height of Sardar Sarowar Dam in Gujrat. • On 27th May 2000 became Union Cabinet Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. Opened a Medical College in Safdarjang Hospital for 100 students Trauma Centre in AIIMS and in 9 states. Bihar in still struggling to give a lead to it. • Between 29.01.2003 to 12.06.04 held the portfolio of Union Cabinet Minister for Small Scale Industries & Development of North Eastern Region, Govt. of India Wanted to Change the compiling in Small Scale Industries in different part of the country including Bihar. • Chairman of Task force for elimination of Kala-azar and Malaria in Bihar in the rank of Cabinet Minister of Bihar Government and pushed up the momentum for kala-azar elimination.
