Magadh Mahila College : A Brief Profile

The Magadh Mahila College, a multi faculty undergraduate and post graduate college for women. The college began as a Government College and today holds the pride of place as a constituent unit of University, teaching a vastly diverse number of subjects and disciplines. Located in a beautiful campus on the edge of the holiest river in , it stands tall in its achievements in providing quality education in an exclusive campus for women, providing myriad facilities. The college is permanently affiliated under session 12 B of U.G.C. act since 1952. The college has been accorded CPE status by the UGC in September 2011 and reaccredited with A grade by the UGC NAAC in January 2013. Magadh Mahila College, the oldest girls‟ college in was established in the year 1946 with 49 students. The number of students has increased many-fold since then. The college currently imparts education to more than 3500 girl students in various disciplines in the faculty of Humanities, Social Science, Science, Computer Science, Management and Commerce. The college has a large campus with an adequate green belt located at the heart of the city. The location of the college with its quality teaching, Computer education, facility for extracurricular activities including sports, music, NSS, NCC and hostel accommodation inside the campus make this college the most desired institution for girls throughout Bihar and neighboring states. The students of Magadh Mahila College have excelled in academics, as well as in sports and music for the last six decades. They have also brought accolades for the college with their extra ordinary performances in software engineering and I.T sectors. Alumni of the college are holding responsible positions in many public and private sectors organizations as Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers, Academicians, Bankers, and Software Developers etc. Some of them are successful entrepreneurs too. Our alumni also represented as members of the Lokh shabha, Legislative Assembly, and Legislative Council. Dr Kiran Ghai an alumna of this college has been elected as a member of Bihar Legislative Council for the second term (2010-2015). Dr. Sukhada Pandey, Former Principal has won as an MLA in 2010 election and joined as the Minister of Youth and Cultural Affairs, Government of Bihar. Along with the Bachelor (Honours) degree courses in nine (09) disciplines in Humanities, six (06) in Social Science, five (05) in Science and B.Commerce, the college also offers Post Graduate courses in six (04) subjects –M.A. in Economics, M.A. in Psychology, M.A. in Home Science and M.Sc. in Chemistry. M.A. in Music is introduced from this academic session (2010). Our college is also the only centre in Patna University where a Honours degree course in Music is being taught. The demand for the professional courses is ever increasing. The college administration is sensitive to the need of the society and introduces new vocational courses in each academic session. College offers a number of professional courses under self financing scheme including Bachelor course in Computer Applications (BCA), Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA), Bachelor in Business Administration (B.B.A.) and Bachelor in Social Work (B.S.W.). We also offer various Post Graduate Diploma courses in Social Sciences e.g. PGD in Women & Child Welfare and PGD in Population Education. A new building is under construction from the internal resources for Commerce and Management Study centre at the North-East corner of the College premises. College has received grant from the UGC for constructing a new Women‟s hostel. The project is under progress. The new hostel is coming up just beside Gargi Chhatrawas (hostel no.–I) in the north-west corner. As part of introduction of Add-on courses, the college has been running the Certificate Course in Computer Applications (C.I.C.). Large numbers of students, faculty members as well as support staff of the college are getting benefited from this course. The course is running on No-Profit-No- Loss basis. The college conducts career counseling sessions regularly and many students got selected for various positions in reputed MNCs e.g. TCS, IBM, Wipro, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank etc. through campus placements. Career Management and Counseling Cell (CMCC) was functioning for the last few years for the benefit of the students. The cell was rejuvenated and restructured in December 2009 with the support of U.G.C. under the merged scheme of Career Counseling Cell (CCC). Prof. Dr Asha Singh, Head, Department of Economics is the Coordinator of the cell and Dr Surendra Kumar Prasad, Lecturer, Department of Botany, is the Assistant Coordinator. The college administration is well aware of special needs of the less privileged sections of the society including the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, OBC (non-creamy layer) and Minorities. In order to fulfill the Indian Constitution‟s obligation for inclusiveness which aims to ensure that the under-privileged, the poor and the minorities, get equal opportunity, the college administration launched various special schemes with U.G.C‟s assistance. General candidates holding BPL Cards (Below Poverty Line) issued by the Central Government /State Government are also enrolled and availed benefits of these coaching classes. The important among these are: Scheme of Remedial Coaching at Undergraduate Level for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBC and Minority Communities Students (RCC) and Coaching Scheme For Entry Into Services For Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBC And Minority Communities Students (CES). Dr Telani Mina Horo of Political Science Department and Dr Kamlesh Kumari are the Coordinator of the RCC and CES respectively. Both the schemes are supported by the U.G.C. The college library is well stocked with more than one lakh books in various languages – English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Bengali, Maithili, Persian, Urdu and on various other subjects. Apart from the Central Library, the College has eight (08) departmental libraries. During the year 2012-2013 3542 new books and 25 journals have been added in the library. Many departments maintain their own Seminar Libraries. The library services are computerized. The library subscribes to a large number of journals, magazines, periodicals and news papers. Some valuable reports such as Reserve Bank of India Report, Economic Survey, Currency and Finance Reports are available in e-book form in the Commerce Departmental Library. Books were also authored by our faculty members. Dr. Aruna Choudhary, Department of Maithili authored a book titled “NIBANDH PIYUS & VAANI VIDHAN” in Press.

Our teachers are guiding many research students perusing PhD programme. Quite a number of them have already obtained their PhD degree under the supervision of our teachers. The thrust areas of research are – Nanoscience, Environmental Chemistry, Biotechnology, Herbal chemistry, Women Studies, Microfinance, Gender Studies etc. Dr Dolly Sinha, the present Principal of the college was awarded and worked on Nano-Materials as a teacher fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore at the prestigious S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata. Two PhD students are working under her supervision - one on nano- ferroelectrics and the other on nano- magnetic materials. Dr. Rani Azad, Head, Department of Chemistry is working on a U.G.C. sponsored major project on Herbal Medicine.

Though the college is primarily for undergraduate studies, it had the distinction to conduct many U.G.C. Refresher courses: one in Chemistry, one in Home Science and seven in IT and e-learning in the past. It has been the only centre in Bihar where Refresher course in IT and e-learning is conducted. The college has conducted two Refresher courses in IT and e-learning during the period 2010. Many senior faculty members of the college work as resource person for the Orientation and Refresher courses conducted by the Academic Staff College, Patna University. The college functions in a democratic way. Its Students’ Central Society is a body of students, which organizes and manages students‟ activities. The Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer and other members of this body are elected every year, usually in the month of February by the students of the college. Ms Mriduwala was elected as the General Secretary in February 2012. She discharged her duties efficiently during the academic session 2012-13. Ms Neelima Jee has been elected as the General Secretary for the session 2013-14. The General Secretary and the two A.G.S. are also members of the Discipline cum Students’ Grievance Cell, which takes care of students‟ grievances including ragging and also manages discipline inside the campus. There are several Committees to assist the Principal to manage the activities and affairs of the college in a democratic manner. The important few are the Advisory committee, the Development cum Finance committee, Building committee, Library committee, Magazine committee, Technical Advisory Committee, Students‟ Grievance Redressal Cell, Grievance Redressal Cell for teachers and staff etc.

8. Study Tour / Field Trip: i. An educational progrmme was conducted by International School of Management, Patna on the 13th of January, 2012 for all the Final year students aspiring to pursue higher studies in the field of management. A first hand experience was given to all the participants about a typical day of good business school. A part from that a session on “Harnessing Human Resource” was conducted by Ms. Malvika Chatterjee, Former Head, Conezant Technology. The second session on “Marketing to the Bottom of the Pyramid” was conducted by Prof. A.K. Haldar, Dean, International School of Manageme. I. Extracurricular: (Academic) i. On 1st January, 2012 Essay Competition on “Relevance of messages of Swami Vivekanand on Youth of Today” organized by Department of History. Ms Amrita Kumari, BBA Part – III, Roll No.22, Won the 2nd Prize & Ms Priya, Roll No. 51 was declared 3rd Prize. ii. On 2nd February, 2012 One day FDP on Data Analysis Using SPSS was organized by International School of Management, Patna. This software training will not only enhance the quality of research and data analysis but also improve the quality of teaching of the faculty members. Dr. S. K. Khandelia, Dr. M.S. Gupta, Ms Vinita Mishra, Mrs. Trishna, Ms Reena Prasad and Mrs. Zarin Fatima of the department of the Economics attended this programme and they got certificate of participation also. iii. On 15th February, 2012 the Department of BBA cooperation with the Department of Economics and B.Com. organized a Debate on the was “Innovation is the Central Issue in Economic Prosperity”. The programme was a part of the productivity celebration of National Productivity council and Bihar State Productivity Council. Dr. T. R. Gandhi introduced the guests and the subject matter. Prof. Dolly Sinha, Principal welcomed the guests. Prof. Asha Singh, Head, Department of Economics threw light on the subject matter and enlightened the students. Prof. Meera Verma, Coordinator, Department of BBA Proposed Vote of thanks. All the faculty members including Dr. S. K. Khandelia, Dr. P. K. On 3rd to 8th September 2012 the Department of BBA organized a 6 days Training Programme on Entrepreneurship Development for students. The Programme was in collaboration with the Bihar Industries Association. Prof. Dolly Sinha, Principal welcomed the guests. The chief guest on this occasion was Mr. Sanjay Srivastava, Director NIFT, Patna lauded the programme and said that after this type of training the girls should not go for jobs but create jobs in the society. Mr. Sanjay Goyanka, Secretary General, Bihar Industries Association will always helps girls to establish entrepreneurship. Mr. M. K. Sinha, Coordinator of the Programme gave a brief account of the programme and Ms Jyoti Patodia presented the session programme. Prof. Meera Verma, Coordinator of BBA extended vote of thanks. v. On 6th October, 2012 the Department of BBA organized a Power Point Presentation on “How Product Diversification is Profitable for Business” for all BBA – I students. Six group participated in this progrmme and one group was selected as the winner. vi. On 8th December, 2012 the Department of Mathematics celebrated “National Mathematics Year‟ 2012. College) vii. On 23rd August, 2012 a Distinguished Lecture was organized by the Department of Physics in collaboration with the Department of Physics, B. S. College, Danapur, Magadh University. The keynote address was given by Dr. Sandeep sahdev, Prof. of Physics, IIT Kanpur on “Indigenous Technology in a Globalize World for Quality Teaching in Science”. viii. On 6th October, 2012 a Poster Competition on “Discovery of Higg‟s Boson, God Partuicle” . A large number of students from various department of the college participated and won the prize. ix. On 5h February , 2013 a Distinguished Lecture on “Nano-Science, Nanotechnology and Nano Medicine: Promises and Challenges” by Prof. Ratnesh Lal, was organized by the Scient & IT Society. Prof. Ratnesh Lal is Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Bio Engineering and Material Sciences Co-Director, Centre for Multiscale Imaging of Living Systems, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Bio Engineering, University of California at Sandiego (UCSD), USA. The theme was “Nano-Sciences, Nanotechnology and Nano-medicine : Promises and Challenges”. The main focus was set on the use of Nano Technology in the following fields: Harnessing solar energy using smart materials, Designing Batteries, Treatment of Pollutants, purification of water, Diagnosis, Designing Clothing, food products etc.

II. Extracurricular (Cultural) Regular competitions and programmes are held to develop and encourage the talented ones in the fine arts. Students perform on Independence day (Patriotic song competition), Republic day, Annual college day, Farewell function, „Basant Utsab‟ (celebrations during Swaraswati Puja and Holi festival), „Sawan Mahotsab‟ (celebrations during Rainy season), Alumnae get- together etc. On these occasions students present dance drama, group dance, solo dance, music – both vocal and instrumental. Some of our students also perform on public stages. The students of Music department are very much on demand as Music teachers for Kendriya Vidalaya (Central Schools) and other reputed schools. Our college is the only college under Patna University which offers Music (Hons) course and Post Graduation in Music. The students of Magadh Mahila College do perform in the Independence Day and Republic Day Cultural fest organized by the Patna University. Following are different important events: i. On 8th February, 2013 Farewell cum Annual Day organized by Department of BBA Judges was Dr. P.K. Agarwal, HOD of M.Com, B.D. College, Patna, Dr. M. S. Gupta, Reader, R.K.D. College, Patna and Dr. S.K. Khandelia, Visiting Faculty, Department of BBA, Magadh Mahila College, Patna. Ms Ajita Mishra was elected Miss B.B.A. , Ms Soni Sharma was 1st Runner Up and Ms Ruhi was 2nd Runner Up. ii. On 8th November, 2012 the Department of BBA under the aegis of Student‟s Central Society organized an Inter Department Dandia Dance Competition. The theme of the competition was the worship of NAVDURGA, the Goddess of Shakti. Prof. Dolly Sinha, Principal and distinguished guests inaugurated the function by lighting of the lamp. The B.Com. Department was won the First Prize, BCA & BBA Department was won the Second Prize and Department of English was won the Third Prize.

iii. On 10th Novmber, 2012 Diwali Fest 2012 was organized by the Department of Commerce. 19 stalls in which all the department of college was participated. Fest was formally inaugurated by the Coordinator, Prof. Bharti Bagchi.

iv. On 05 September, 2012 The Teacher’s Day was celebrated & Organized by Darshan Parishad. The programme began with teachers of the college paying homage to Dr. Sarvapalli Radha Krishnan and by lighting the lamp.

v. On 04 September, 2012 Students Central Society organized Miss Fresher Day for the newly admitted students of the B.A., B.Sc. B.Com, B.C.A. and BSW courses 2012 – 2015. Prof. Dolly Sinha, Principal inaugurates the programme.

vi. On 03 September, 2012 BCA 1st year and the PGDCA students of department of Computer Applications celebrated Fresher’s Party, organized by the students of 3rd year and 2ns year of the department.

vii. On 01 August 2012 Sawan Mahotsava was celebrated. The programme was organized by Rajniti Parishad. An Inter Departmental group folk dance competition was organized on this occasion. Ten Departments took part in this competition – B.Com., BCA, English, Economics, History, Hindi, Home Science, Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology.

viii. On 6th March, 2012 Student‟s Central Society organized Common Farewell & Miss Magadh Mahila Contest 2012. Chief Guest was Monika Rai, Bandhani Boutique, Prof Jaya Mehta (NIPT) and Sugandha Sinha, CLU, Chanakya Law University.

III. Extracurricular (Sports) i. Ms Barkha Dutta and Ms Shreya of BBA Part – III, Member of Bihar team which took part in the 25th Senior National Korfball Championships held at Jaipur in Rajasthan during 8th to 12th February, 2012.
