Simon Donaldson and Andrew Wiles will serve as editors-in-chief, while I will serve as managing editor. Associate editors are Brian Conrad, Ingrid Daubechies, Charles Fefferman, János Kollár, Andrei Okounkov, David Morrison, Cliff Taubes, Peter Ozsváth, and Karen Smith. The Monograph Series publishes Letter from the president selected expositions of recent developments, both in emerging areas and in older subjects transformed by new insights or unifying ideas. The next volume in the series will be Ricci Flow and the Poincaré Conjecture, by John Morgan and Gang Tian. Their book will appear in the summer of 2007. In related publishing news, the Institute has had the complete record of the Göttingen seminars of Felix Klein, 1872–1912, digitized and made available on James Carlson. -

Speech at the Conference on Conformal Geometry and Riemann Surfaces October 27, 2013 Ravi S. Kulkarni October 29, 2013 1 Greetings I am very happy today. I did not know that so many people loved me enough to gather at Queens College to wish me a healthy, long, and productive life over and above the 71 years I have already lived. It includes my teacher Shlomo Sternberg, present here on skype, and my \almost"-teachers Hyman Bass, and Cliff Earle. Alex Lubotzky came from Israel, Ulrich Pinkall from Germany, and Shiga from Japan. If I have counted correctly there are 14 people among the speakers who are above 65, and 5 below 65, of which only 3 in their 30s to 50s. There are many more in the audience who are in their 50s and below. I interpret this as: we old people have done something right. And of course that something right, is that we have done mathematics. The conference of this type is new for the Math department at Queens College, although it had many distinguished mathematicians like Arthur Sard, Leo Zippin, Banesh Hoffman, Edwin Moise, ... before, on its faculty. I find this Conference especially gratifying since I already went back to In- dia in 2001, enjoyed several leaves without pay, and finally retired from Queens College, in Feb 2008. However I keep coming back to Queens college and Grad- uate Center twice a year and enjoy my emeritus positions with all the office and library/computer advantages. For a long time, I felt that people here thought that I was an Indian in America. -

An Algebra Teacher I could Understand Emmy award-winning journalist and bestselling author Cokie Roberts once said: As long as algebra is taught in school, there will be prayer in school. 1.1. An Object of Pride. Mathematician’s relationship with the general public most closely resembles “bipolar” disorder - at the same time they admire us and hate us. Almost everyone has had at least one bad experience with mathematics during some part of their education. Get into any taxi and tell the driver you are a mathematician and the response is predictable. First, there is silence while the driver relives his greatest nightmare - taking algebra. Next, you will hear the immortal words: “I was never any good at mathematics.” My response is: “I was never any good at being a taxi driver so I went into mathematics.” You can learn a lot from taxi drivers if you just don’t tell them you are a mathematician. Why get started on the wrong foot? The mathematician David Mumford put it: “I am accustomed, as a professional mathematician, to living in a sort of vacuum, surrounded by people who declare with an odd sort of pride that they are mathematically illiterate.” 1.2. A Balancing Act. The other most common response we get from the public is: “I can’t even balance my checkbook.” This reflects the fact that the public thinks that mathematics is basically just adding numbers. They have no idea what we really do. Because of the textbooks they studied, they think that all needed mathematics has already been discovered. -

HITCHIN CONNECTION ON THE VEECH CURVE SHEHRYAR SIKANDER Abstract. We give an expression for the pull back of the Hitchin connection from the moduli space of genus two curves to a ten-fold covering of a Teichm¨ullercurve discovered by Veech. We then give an expression, in terms of iterated integrals, for the monodromy representation of this connection. (USA) Online ISSN: 2249-4626 & Print ISSN: 0975-5896 Comments on the 2011 Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences - - An Analysis of Collectively Formed Errors in Physics By C. Y. Lo Applied and Pure Research Institute, Nashua, NH Abstract - The 2011 Shaw Prize in mathematical sciences is shared by Richard S. Hamilton and D. Christodoulou. However, the work of Christodoulou on general relativity is based on obscure errors that implicitly assumed essentially what is to be proved, and thus gives misleading results. The problem of Einstein’s equation was discovered by Gullstrand of the 1921 Nobel Committee. In 1955, Gullstrand is proven correct. The fundamental errors of Christodoulou were due to his failure to distinguish the difference between mathematics and physics. His subsequent errors in mathematics and physics were accepted since judgments were based not on scientific evidence as Galileo advocates, but on earlier incorrect speculations. Nevertheless, the Committee for the Nobel Prize in Physics was also misled as shown in their 1993 press release. Here, his errors are identified as related to accumulated mistakes in the field, and are illustrated with examples understandable at the undergraduate level. Another main problem is that many theorists failed to understand the principle of causality adequately. It is unprecedented to award a prize for mathematical errors.
