Every year, right before Halloween, my mom took us door to door through our neighborhood with election leaflets. Then a few days later we returned for trick-or-treating. To this day, we are not entirely sure whether those leaflets had any bearing on the kind of treats we received. Maybe all that excess chocolate from certain neigh- bors was a coincidence. Millions of Americans have heeded a personal call to service: a voice of conscience that springs from vision, ideas, and values and urges participation. JOURNALISM AT A JUNCTURE An Interim Report to the National Press Club Membership on the Nationwide 2008 Centennial Forums Program. By Gil Klein Director, Centennial Forums Project January 16, 2009. For its 2008/9 centennial year, the National Press Club asked me to organize a nationwide series of forums to engage leading journalists, news media authorities, students and citizens in a conversation on “The First Amendment, Freedom of the Press and the Future of Journalism.” At each stop, we gathered a panel of print, broadcast and online journalists as well as a journalism academic or First Amendment scholar – about 130 in all -- to talk about where the news business is going and how to protect its core values as its underlying economic model changes. Crossing the Mississippi River a dozen times, I visited 24 states and the District of Columbia. The NPC president, former presidents and board members hosted events in another four states, and we held forums by live Webcast and two-way satellite communication from the Club to journalism school and public audiences in another six states. In all, the project reached thousands of people in audiences at 38 locations in 34 States and DC, usually at journalism schools, regional Press Clubs and civic auditoriums. Add in C-SPAN’s coverage of the New York City forum, broadcast on local community access television, university channels and public radio stations, as well as public radio interviews, and the project reached a nationwide audience of many thousands more. I bring you greetings from press clubs that co-sponsored our forums in Atlanta, San Diego, Denver, Milwaukee, New Orleans and Naples, Fla. -

WHAT WILL FOLLOW IN 1978 I surveyed 450 journalists who were in Washington to cover national government for American commercial news organizations: half completed an elaborate sixteen-page questionnaire; half were inter- viewed by telephone. The findings identified the press corps by sex, race, education, types of media, and experience and (through the telephone interviews) revealed a good deal about the reporters’ views on such mat- ters as political bias and disagreements with their home office. That was considerably more information than had ever been gathered before. Twenty-seven years later, when I became a professor at George Wash- ington University, I recruited my students and my interns at Brookings to help me search for the 450. We tracked them down in France, England, Italy, Australia, and nineteen U.S. states in addition to the Washington, D.C., area. In the end we located 90 percent of the original subjects and interviewed 283 of them (interviewers are identified in the endnotes). Eighty-seven of the original subjects had died before we found them, and we relied on their obituaries for information. This is not a “Class of ’78” in the sense of identifying a group of indi- viduals entering college together. Our respondents had an age spread of more than a half-century: Richard Strout became a Washington reporter when Warren G. Harding was president and retired when the president was Ronald Reagan; Charlotte Moulton became a Washington reporter when the president was Franklin D. Roosevelt and retired when Jimmy Carter was president; others were still working journalists when we closed the book in 2012, during the presidency of Barack Obama. -
