Half-truths, innuendos, and personal attacks are being spread in the name of God. As long as we’ve had organized religion, we’ve also had politics. Unfortunately that means degrading and negative campaigning also rears its ugly head inside the doors of our churches. Perhaps you have heard the personal attacks and deception at the Baptist church Ð or know your church leaders are being pressured to make decisions based on outrageous and untruthful accusations made against The Baptist General Conven- tion of Texas. Whatever your situation may be, Texas Baptists of good faith all over the state are rising up in righteous indignation over this blatant, crude attempt to polarize our historic Baptist faith, divide us as brothers and sisters in Christ and fulfill a political agenda. We ask your prayers for Baptist leaders across Texas as we keep our focus and continue the work we are called to do. And may we ask you to help us call a halt to these un-Christian attacks. Guiding principles of The Baptist General Convention of Texas: ¥ We believe the Bible is inspired and true Ð all of it. ¥ We are committed to the Bible as our only creed. ¥ We make missions a priority Ð always have, always will. ¥ We affirm reverence for human life and oppose abortion. ¥ We have spoken clearly and acted decisively in opposing homosexual behavior. ¥ We support religious freedom and the separation of church from government control or favoritism. ¥ We affirm the autonomy of the local church Ð its responsibility and accountability to God alone Ð not a denomination. ¥ We always seek to assist any Baptist who shares our vision. Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness Against Thy Neighbor. No matter how many times some people hear this basic rule of Christianity they still cannot live by its simple lesson. If you are a concerned Texas Baptist you probably have heard about the disagreement some are having with The Baptist General Convention of Texas. We want you to be aware of the half-truths and personal attacks that are being used to divide and deeply trouble all Texas Baptists of good faith. This deception reminds us of the negative campaigning we continue to see in politics. For years, BGCT member churches have endured attacks with patience and humility, but enough is enough. In many instances The BGCT has been given no opportunity for defense. It is time the plain and simple, undistorted truth be made public. May we ask all who live by this rule to help us call a halt to the bearing of false witness against this God-directed organization that historically has brought Baptists together for the work of our Lord.
