BMC Evolutionary Biology 2012, 12:201 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/12/201 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Evidence for 5S rDNA Horizontal Transfer in the toadfish Halobatrachus didactylus (Schneider, 1801) based on the analysis of three multigene families Manuel A Merlo1, Ismael Cross1, José L Palazón2,3, María Úbeda-Manzanaro1,2, Carmen Sarasquete2 and Laureana Rebordinos1* Abstract Background: The Batrachoididae family is a group of marine teleosts that includes several species with more complicated physiological characteristics, such as their excretory, reproductive, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Previous studies of the 5S rDNA gene family carried out in four species from the Western Atlantic showed two types of this gene in two species but only one in the other two, under processes of concerted evolution and birth-and-death evolution with purifying selection. Here we present results of the 5S rDNA and another two gene families in Halobatrachus didactylus, an Eastern Atlantic species, and draw evolutionary inferences regarding the gene families. In addition we have also mapped the genes on the chromosomes by two-colour fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Results: Two types of 5S rDNA were observed, named type α and type β. Molecular analysis of the 5S rDNA indicates that H. didactylus does not share the non-transcribed spacer (NTS) sequences with four other species of the family; therefore, it must have evolved in isolation.

Mhaisen1, 1 Tegnervӓgen 6B, 641 36 Katrineholm, Sweden 2 Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources, College of Agriculture, University of Basrah, Basrah, Iraq e-mail: [email protected] , Abstract. Reviewing the literature on all the acanthocephalans parasitizing freshwater and marine fishes of Basrah province, Iraq indicated the presence of 14 acanthocephalan taxa. Seven taxa belong to the class Eoacanthocephala and seven to the class Palaeacanthocephala. All these acanthocephalans, except Serrasentis spp. are adults living in the intestine of their fish hosts. Five species of such acanthocephalans were recorded from freshwater localities, seven from marine localities and two taxa from both freshwater and marine localities. The total number of acanthocephalan species recorded for each fish host species fluctuated from a minimum of one acanthocephalan species in 18 fish hosts to a maximum of six acanthocephalan species in Liza abu only. Number of fish hosts reported for these acanthocephalans fluctuated from one host in case of seven species to a maximum of 21 hosts in case of Neoechinorhynchus iraqensis. Key words: Acanthocephala, freshwater fishes, marine fishes, Basrah province, Iraq. Since the work of C. Niebuhr, a Danish biologist in the 18th century, the number of valid species has increased significantly and the systematic status of many of the species has changed, and reorganization and updating of the published information has become essential. Here we take the opportunity to provide a new and updated checklist of fishes of Persian Gulf based on literature and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history and new fish collections. The total confirmed fish species of Persian Gulf comprise 744 species, 131 families, 445 genera and 27 orders. In the class Chondrichthyes, the most diverse family is Charcharhinidae with 23 species (41.89%), followed by Dasyatidae with 15 species (31.08%). Within the class Actinopterygii, Gobiidae with 65 species (9.70%), Carangidae with 45 species (6.27%), Serranidae with 25 species (3.73%), Apogonidae with 25 species (3.73%), Lutjanidae with 23 species (3.43%) and Blenniidae with 23 species (3.43%) are the most diverse families in the Persian Gulf.
