Publications: The Emergence Quarterly. Books include The Reappearance of the Christ and the Masters of Wisdom, Maitreya’s Mission, Messages from Maitreya, the Christ and Transmission: A Meditation for a New Age. HISTORY Benjamin Creme was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1922. During his early years Creme studied art and esoteric philosophy, and eventually became known both as a modernist painter and an expert in the teachings of Helena Blavatsky and Alice A. Bailey.1 While he came to believe in the existence of the “Masters of Wisdom” (i.e., great teachers who have evolved to a higher level of existence) through the writings of the Theosophists, he was nonetheless surprised when he was contacted by one of the Masters in 1959. The Master prophesied that the Christ would return in twenty years, and that Creme would play a role in the Christ’s activities.2 In 1972, the Master began training Creme for his role as forerunner to the Christ.3 From 1975–1979, Creme spoke throughout Europe about the coming Christ who would fulfill all religions’ prophecies concerning a coming savior. This activity became increasingly important when the Christ, known as Maitreya, left his refuge in the Himalayas in July of 1977, and particularly when he began appearing to London’s Indian-Pakistani community in March of 1978.4 Maitreya’s most significant appearance allegedly occurred in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1988.

    The Encyclopedia of New Religions Bibliography The following bibliography has been constructed to enable readers to explore selected topics in greater depth. Rather than present a long uncategorized list, which would have been unhelpful and potentially confusing, the classification of literature mirrors the format of the book. (Classifying new religions and spiritualities is a notoriously difficult problem, and it should not be thought that groups that have been bracketed together do not have important differences.) In a few instances a movement may be relevant to more than one section; hence readers are advised to look in other sections if they cannot instantly locate the sought material. Anyone who compiles a bibliography on new spiritualities has to make choices, since there is a vast array of literature available. While endeavouring to include a good range of material and viewpoints, we have omitted material that we consider to be badly inaccurate or misleading. However, some religious movements have been virtually neglected by writers and hence the material indicated below is the best available. For some groups there is virtually no literature apart from their own writings. While we have aimed to incorporate material on the grounds of accessibility, quality, up-to-dateness, popularity and prominence, inclusion here does not necessarily imply endorsement by the editor or individual authors. Para psychology in Crisis New•~?apers often print predictions from 10 "clairvoyants" and people claiming paranormal powers to see into the future. A: Here is a modified definition of the New Age Movement from Walter Martin's book "The New Age Cult": A loose organization of people, who believe the world has entered (or will soon enter) the Aquarian Age when peace on earth and one-world government will rule. They see themselves as advanced in consciousness, rejecting Judeo-Christian values and the Bible in favor of Eastern philosophies and religion.
