Heald ABSTRACT According to the current copyright statute, in 2018, copyrighted works of music, film, and literature will begin to transition into the public domain. While this will prove a boon for users and creators, it could be disastrous for the owners of these valuable copyrights. Accordingly, the next few years will witness another round of aggressive lobbying by the film, music, and publishing industries to extend the terms of already-existing works. -

a Utopia during the progressive era the helicon home colony 1906-1907 lawrence kaplan From early October, 1906, until the middle of March, 1907, when it was completely destroyed by fire, a Utopian community known as the Helicon Home Colony (and also called Helicon Hall) operated successfully on the fashionable east hill of Englewood, New Jersey. Prominent persons associated with the experiment in one capacity or another, like Upton Sinclair, John Dewey, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Jo Davidson, Sinclair Lewis, William James and others contributed to its reputation. Although largely ignored by historians of the period and barely remembered, except by a handful of local residents, Helicon Hall provided lively copy for the media. Stories about the colony regularly appeared in contemporary newspapers and magazines, shocking and titillating a readership just beginning to question the mores and values of the Victorian age. The Victorian frame of mind, which dominated the American public consciousness during the late nineteenth century, offered a whole range of universal "truths" for the conduct of life and thought. Starting from assumptions regarding an unpleasant and unchanging "human nature," the American Victorians held particularly dogmatic views about middle class behavior which attained the sanctity of absolute laws. Thought to be basic to every other institution was the family unit, whose stability supposedly determined the very health of society.1 And essential to family 0026-3079/84/2502-0059$0l .50/0 59 life remained the submissive role of women. As the weaker and more sensitive sex, females were trained from childhood to be full time wives and devoted mothers. -

Readers of both volumes may note that in this later volume criticism has tended to supplant history. Only in writing of dead authors can the critic feel that any considerable portion of his task is done when he has arranged them in what he thinks their proper categories and their true perspective. In the case of living authors he has regularly to remember that he works with shifting materials, with figures whose dimensions and importance may be changed by growth, with persons who may desert old paths for new, reveal unsuspected attributes, increase or fade with the mere revolutions of time. -

FISHER 151 Pages The Committee on Public Information (CPI) was the official propaganda agency of the United States during the First World War, seeking to homogenize American public opinion and spread American ideals across the globe. Through a case study of Edwin Björkman’s work among Swedish Americans, this thesis illuminates how the CPI approached its work among immigrants, engaging questions of Americanization and transnationalism. Through an analysis of the John Ericsson League of Patriotic Service and the Scandinavian Bureau—both its domestic and foreign operations—this thesis argues that Edwin Björkman and the CPI promoted cultural pluralism rather than assimilation to a dominant Anglo-American culture.
