  • Lessons from the British Paper Pound, 1797-1821 ∗
Fiscal Sustainability and the Value of Money: Lessons from the British Paper Pound, 1797-1821 ∗ Pamfili Antipa y Banque de France July 2014 Preliminary Abstract This article explores the determinants of price level fluctuations in Britain during the first suspension of the gold standard over the 1797-1821 period. I find that the contemporary price level was determined by world gold prices and expectations regarding the resumption of the gold standard at the pre-war parity. As the latter hinged on market participants’ expectations concerning the financial burden of the Napoleonic Wars, my contribution establishes the importance of fiscal factors for the determination of the price level. Keywords: Fiscal Theory of the Price Level, debt monetization, structural breaks. Over the 1797-1821 Restriction Period, Britain under George III suspended the convertibility of Bank of England notes into gold in order to finance the Napoleonic Wars.

  • Constructing Mythologies of the Germanen
Constructing Mythologies of the Germanen in Nineteenth- and Twentieth- century Germany Iain Boyd Whyte Casting its gaze broadly across the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, this essay investigates the construction of a pre-history of German visual art and architecture rooted in the ancient practice of theGermanen . After the Congress of Vienna created the framework in 1815 for the modern European nation states, art and architecture assumed a new role in defining and giving form to the national character, with museums and public institutions designed to serve the public domain. Accordingly, art history was structured according to national schools, which were seen to exemplify national character. In Germany this process of mythologisation through the reinvention of ancient art practice was nurtured as a powerful emotional antidote to the modernisation, internationalisation, and secularisation of German society. As Claude Lévi-Strauss once noted, myths are ‘machines for the suppression of time’.1 It was also a highly promiscuous activity, ranging in its search for possible sources across all the visual and decorative arts, architecture, archaeology, ethnology, linguistics, literary history, and material culture. This short essay explores the diversity of this compulsion to invent and construct mythologies of nation, memory, and tradition, and its recurring iterations over the 19th and 20th centuries. Definitions and adoptions The Germanen are defined not by geographical location but by language and ethnology, with tribal groupings coalescing around three main groupings: the North Germanic, essentially the modern Scandinavian nations; the East Germanic based 1 Claude Lévi-Strauss, The Raw and around the Oder and the Vistula; and the West Germanic the Cooked: Introduction to a Sci group, made up of Elbe Germanen (Lombards, Bavarians and ence of Mythology (New York: Harper & Row, 1969), 16.

  • Napoleonic Wars 1803 - 1815
Camden Remembers – Napoleonic Wars 1803 - 1815 NAPOLEONIC WARS 1803-1815 The Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815) were a series of major conflicts pitting the French Empire led by Emperor Napoleon I against an array of European powers formed into various coalitions. They revolutionized European armies and played out on an unprecedented scale, mainly owing to the application of modern mass conscription. The wars are traditionally seen as a continuation of the Revolutionary Wars, which broke out in 1792 during the French Revolution. Initially, French power rose quickly as the armies of Napoleon conquered much of Europe. In his military career, Napoleon fought about 60 battles and lost seven, mostly at the end. The great French dominion collapsed rapidly after the disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812. Napoleon was defeated in 1814 and once more in 1815 at Waterloo after a brief return to power. The Allies then reversed all French gains since the Revolutionary Wars at the Congress of Vienna. Before a final victory against Napoleon, five of seven coalitions saw defeat at the hands of France. France defeated the first and second coalitions during the French Revolutionary Wars, the third (notably at Austerlitz), the fourth (notably at Jena, Eylau, and Friedland) and the fifth coalition (notably at Wagram) under the leadership of Napoleon. These great victories gave the French Army a sense of invulnerability, especially when it approached Moscow. But after the retreat from Russia, in spite of incomplete victories, France was defeated by the sixth coalition at Leipzig, in the Peninsular War at Vitoria and at the hands of the seventh coalition at Waterloo.
