These centres are a base from which the Eastern Health Board's medical, nursing.. Counselling"outreac~ and community welfare staff operate. . , ~.

They provide: Information for pa~nt~, community groups',: and schools '-' ' Education and HIV prevention services Primary care, addiction counselling, com'munlty welfare . Methadone dispensing and 'aftercare rehabilitation SATELLITE, CLINICS Satellite clinicS are smaller treatment fadlities established within local are'as for local drug·misusers. This is the fourth edition of the Directory and, as in previous editions, it has been published as a comprehensive resource for health care professionals when making referrals to alcohol and drug treatment services.

Those familiar with earlier editions will know that there is a constant development within the addiction services. To address this and provide the latest current information, centralised phone numbers have been given. This is particularly the case with addiction centres, satellite clinics, needle exchange services and local Drug Task Forces.

Further information on alcohol and drug services can be obtained by contacting any of the Health Promotion Offices, listed on the outside of the back cover.

Care has been taken to reflect the number of new addiction services established since the last publication to deal with the increasing incidence of drug misuse, some of which include alcohol as a secondary addiction. However, it is important to be aware of the large number of treatment programmes, which continue to be available, that are primarily concerned with alcohol misuse.

For convenience in using the Directory, treatment centres are listed under the Health Board area in which they operate. Other addenda to aid the reader include maps showing the boundaries of the Health Boards and the Community Care Areas of the Eastern Health Board, an alphabetical Index and a Glossary of some of the terms used in the methods of treatment.

With increased efforts to deal with the growing problem of drug misuse there have been, and will continue to be chaI1ges and additions to treatment centres and other involved agencies. Thus it is inevitable that there will have been such changes or additions since the printing of this Fourth Edition of the Directory.

The Ministerial Task Force was set up by the Government in 1996 to identify changes or new measures needed. Local Drugs Task Forces were set up to provide a strategic, locally based response by the statutory, voluntary and community sectors ..

The membership of each task force includes representation from the relevant Health Board, the, Garda Siochana, the Probation and Welfare Service, the relevant Local AuthOrity, the Education/Youth Service and FAS, and from the local community.

Each Task Force provides a profile of all existing or planned services and resources dealing with drugs misuse in their areas and the coordination of those services and agencies concerned.
