ABSTRACT: The aims of the present paper are to establish the specific structure of communities of prostigmatic and mesostigmatic mites in nests of the semi-collared flycatcher (Ficedula semitorquata) and to compare the fauna with the mites in nests of two other European flycatchers. For analysis of community structure of mites were used the indices: prevalence, relative density, mean intensity and dominance. Mite communities are strongly dominated by the species Dermanyssus gallinae and Ornithonyssus sylviarum, which were found with the highest frequency and dominance. The mite communities are characterized by a large number of subrecedent species. KEYWORDS: Acariformes, Parasitiformes, Nest of Bird, Community Structure INTRODUCTION The nests of different species of birds are an example of a fairly unstable and isolated habitat, with its own dependent on it specific fauna which involves different groups of invertebrate animals. One of the components of this fauna which demonstrates particular abundance is the arthropods, and more specifically, the mites. The studies of Parasitiformes show that mesostigmatic mites living in birds' nests vary both in terms of their species affiliation and the structure of their communities [4, 8]. Highly important with respect to veterinary science and medicine are a number of species, such as Ornithonyssus bursa, Ornithonyssus sylviarum, Dermanyssus gallinae harboured by birds, Ornithonyssus bacoti, harboured by rodents, etc. -

SHACHTER, DVM, Alameda, California Cheyletiella blakei, an ectoparasitic mite of domestic cats, can cause an extremely annoying, persis- tent and pruritic dermatosis of obscure origin (cryptic infestation) in susceptible persons having close contact with infested cats. Although the prevalence ofcheyletiellosis in humans andcats appears to be low, evidence of its occurrence in California is increasing. Cheyletiellosis is often underdiagnosed in both its natural host and in humans. The small size of the mite, lack of publicity about the disease, frequentabsence ofsymptoms in infested cats andfailure to recover the mite from humans contribute to its delayedrecognition. When C blakei or other mites are suspectedofbeing the cause ofa dermatosis, medical entomologists may help to hasten the diagnosis by examining the patient's physical surround- ings, potential vertebrate hosts and other sources for the presence of mites. After C blakei has been eliminatedfrom cats with an appropriate pesticide, the disease in humans is self-limiting. The genus Cheletonella Womersley within the family Cheyletidae comprises four species. This study presents the first record of the Cheletonella and C. vespertilionis Womersley for the fauna of Poland, and is based on mite specimens found in litter and detritus samples collected from the foot of wall of a tunnel used as shelter by bats, and found in litter and soil samples located close to the bat boxes in the city park. Cheletonella summersi Chatterjee and Gupta is considered here as a species inquirenda. It is also provided an updated list of cheyletid mites recorded from Poland. Chapter 1 The Magnitude and Diversity of Infectious Diseases “All interest in disease and death is only another expression of interest in life.” Thomas Mann THE IMPORTANCE OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN TERMS OF HUMAN MORTALITY According to the U.S. Census Bureau, on July 20, 2011, the USA population was 311 806 379, and the world population was 6 950 195 831 [2]. The U.S. Central Intelligence agency estimates that the USA crude death rate is 8.36 per 1000 and the world crude death rate is 8.12 per 1000 [3]. This translates to 2.6 million people dying in 2011 in the USA, and 56.4 million people dying worldwide. These numbers, calculated from authoritative sources, correlate surprisingly well with the widely used rule of thumb that 1% of the human population dies each year. How many of the world’s 56.4 million deaths can be attributed to infectious diseases? According to World Health Organization, in 1996, when the global death toll was 52 million, “Infectious diseases remain the world’s leading cause of death, accounting for at least 17 million (about 33%) of the 52 million people who die each year” [4]. Of course, only a small fraction of infections result in death, and it is impossible to determine the total incidence of infec- tious diseases that occur each year, for all organisms combined. Still, it is useful to consider some of the damage inflicted by just a few of the organisms that infect humans. Malaria infects 500 million people. About 2 million people die each year from malaria [4]. -

This clinical case report was performed to give information about canine cheyletiellosis in 45-days-old Poodle puppies showing mainly pruritus and dandruff symptoms. Mites were detected in stereo microscopic examination of hair and skin scraping samples collected from dogs brought to a private veterinary clinic in Kocaeli province of Turkey. All collected materials were preserved in eppendorf tubes containing 70% ethanol and sent to the parasitology laboratory for species identification. Mite preparations for microscopic examination were prepared, and the species causing infestations in puppies was identified asCheyletiella yasguri. This case is the first canine cheyletiellosis report in Kocaeli province of Turkey, and also the first C. yasguri infestation in Poodle breed dogs in Turkey. Symptoms of pruritus and dandruff were successfully resolved in a short time with the single dose spot-on formulation of selamectin administration, as well as routine combing of puppies and environmental cleaning.
