The funeral service and wake of David John Bowman (1946 - 2018) would have to be one of the most attended such services in the history of the township of Coober Pedy.

The funeral cortege itself comprised of some 200-300 vehicles, and was so long that, as vehicles were entering the road to Boot Hill Cemetary, vehicles were still leaving the carpark at the Catacomb Church.

In fact, the event was so well attended by DCCP employees that Council was unable to open it's doors for business at either the Admin Office or the Works Depot. SAPOL provided the procession with a full police escort and even did road closures.

The church service was conducted by outgoing Pastor Geoff Piggott. As many people were outside the Catcomb Church, as were able to cram inside the church itself, all listening to the service on speakers that were kindly provided.

Dave was farewelled at the service by his daughter Renee, who spoke movingly of her strong bond with the incredible man that was her father. The next speaker, Andy McDougal, shared an abridged but intimate, first hand account of Dave's time in military service in Vietnam. Margaret Mackay © Pastor Geoff Piggott of the Underground Catacombe Church farewells Coober Pedy son Dave Bowman The final speaker, Michael Beelitz gave an emotional and heartfelt account of the mentoring, supportive role that Margaret Mackay © Dave had in the time they got to work together in the Mines Rescue Department here in Coober Pedy.

Michael related his recollections with those present, but perhaps most memorable was when he told us that, whenever they attended an rescue incident and someone was required to "go down the hole", that it would always be Dave who stepped forward first and said he was going down.

Bryce Tickner kicked of precedings at the wake, which was appropriately held at the Coober Pedy R.S.L. Many people came into town from far afield, as well as a great many locals. Margaret Mackay ©

Page 12 Coober Pedy Regional Times Thursday 19 April 2018 Rainbow Wrack - opal formed by seaweed Scientists have discovered a completely new type of opal formed by a common seaweed which harnesses natural technology by self-assembling a nanostructure of oil droplets to control how light reflects from its cells to display a shimmering array of colours that until now, has only been seen in the gem stone.

The findings, published in Science Advances and led by Drs Heather Whitney and Ruth Oulton from the University of Bristol, show that the bright blue and green iridescent sheen from the brown algae seaweed, also known as "rainbow wrack" (Cystoseira Tamariscifolia) and commonly found throughout the European costal region including the UK, arises from a complex nanostructure that controls how light reflects from its cells containing chloroplasts.

Even more remarkable, is how these seaweeds can switch this self-assembly on and off, creating changing opals which react to the changing sunlight in tidal rockpools.

Such structures arise from nanosized spheres packed tightly in a regular way and are known to optics experts "Rainbow wrack" (Cystoseira Tamariscifolia) a completely new type of opal formed by a common seaweed to reflect different colours from incoming white light into different directions.
