Now, thirty-four years later, after fourteen years of study in the Academy of Shem and Ever and twenty years with Laban, Esau's hatred Bereishit 32:4 – 36:43 Hertz Chumash pp. 122-134 Artscroll, pp. 170 remained strong. As Jacob advanced toward Israel with his family, Esau advanced toward Haftorah Ovadyah Hertz Chumash, pp. 137 Artscroll, pp. 1141 him with an imposing army, determined to carry out his threat. The confrontation between the two brothers is recorded to show how G-d sent an angel to save Jacob from the stronger enemy, Esau. Jacob did not rely on his DAILY SERVICES own righteousness, but strove mightily to ensure his safety through practical measures. G-d saw this and blessed his efforts.     Rabbi's Message "Sucker Sermon" September 28, 1967 Elul 23, 5727 Fifth Avenue Synagogue Vol. X, No. 1 The high holy day season induces mixed feelings in most rabbis. On the one hand they rejoice that so many of their co-religionists attend services and fill pews that are usually vacant. At the same time, however, they are de-pressed that the beautiful prayers of the traditional liturgy do not move congregants as they were wont to in days of yore. Alas, that too often it is like the rendering of magnificent symphonic music to audiences that are tone deaf! Indeed, when one considers how few are the Jews in the modern age to whom the prayers ax*e truly meaningful, one has reason to exclaim that Jews are very loyal, long-suffering people. They crowd into their synagogues, give handsomely of their resources in order to do so, and then patiently suffer through hours of ritual which neither quickens their hearts nor stimulates their intellects. Apparently they do all of this because they want to be counted among their people and thus identify themselves with the fate and destiny of their brethren. This, in and of itself, is commendable and is to be encouraged. Yet rabbis want to do more to make this manifestation of the sense of Jewish solidarity a rewarding experience. May I offer a few suggestions? If we Jews were not so sophisticated, perhaps our prayers could be made simple — as simple as nursery rhymes. However, we are sophisticated and we ought not act as retardates in religion when we are cultured persons in our appreciation of poetry generally.

Rabbi Meir Goldwicht, a prominent Israeli scholar and educator, is the Joel and Maria Finkle Visiting Israeli Rosh Yeshiva and a rosh yeshiva at the Yeshiva Program/Mazer School of Talmudic Studies at Yeshiva Uni- versity. He is also head rosh yeshiva at the Irving I. Stone Beit Midrash Program. Rabbi Goldwicht received semikha from the renowned rabbinic authorities Rabbi Zalman Nehemia Goldberg, former Chief Rabbi of Jeru- salem HaRav HaGaon Betzalel Zolti and Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, HaRav Harashi of Israel. Rabbi Goldwicht delivers Hebrew and English lectures extensively across the metropolitan area, throughout the United States and in Israel, including weekly evening shiurim in 5 New York area communi- ties.     Jewish Communal Fund GIVING 2020 REPORT ABOUT JEWISH COMMUNAL FUND Jewish Communal Fund (JCF) is the largest and most active network of Jewish funders in the nation. JCF facilitates philanthropy for more than 8,000 people associated with 4,100 funds, totaling $2 billion in charitable assets. In FY 2020, our generous Fundholders granted out $536 million—27% of our assets—to charities in all sectors. The impact of JCF’s network of funders on the Jewish community and beyond is profound. In addition to an annual unrestricted grant to UJA-Federation of New York, JCF’s Special Gifts Fund (our endowment) has granted more than $20 million since 1999 to support programs in the Jewish community at home and abroad, including kosher food pantries and soup kitchens, day camp scholarships for children from low-income homes, and programs for Holocaust survivors with dementia.
