A LETTER FROM FAS LEADERSHIP

Dearest Friends,

We head into the new calendar year with a sense of profound gratitude to Hashem: for the new COVID-19 vaccine that we hope will soon be accessible to all of us; and for the continued dedication of our community to our beloved Shul, even as we approach a full year since the pandemic began.

Please take time to peruse the bulletin closely. We have included information about where to find vaccine pro- vider locations, as well as a wonderful chesed project initiated by Ramaz sixth grader Harry Honig, who has of- fered to help FAS members navigate the technology involved in scheduling a vaccine appointment. There is also information about the incredible schedule of speakers who have and will be participating in our Sunday evening zooms: international figures, including Harry Macklowe; Alan Dershowitz; Mem Bernstein; Dr. Larry Norton; and Dore Gold, among others. We look forward to hearing their insights on the latest events in Israel, medical innovation, Philanthropy, and political and cultural affairs as they impact our community and the Jewish people. We are deeply appreciative of the participation of all of these outstanding speakers, and you can find recordings of past programs on our website at www.5as.org.

Baruch HaShem, our doors have been open since September for thrice-daily minyanim, as well as Shabbat services. We encourage those of you who are able to join for minyan so that we can support those in our community who are in need of saying Kaddish. We continue to maintain strict protocols in relation to COVID-19, including social distancing and required use of masks.

The silver lining of the pandemic has been increased opportunity for prayer, learning, and reflection. We hope you will find a warm and welcoming home at Fifth Avenue Synagogue in all of these areas. You and your families are always in our thoughts and prayers, and we hope that you will call us if we can ever be of assistance to you.

With great affection,

Rabbi Eli Babich Chairman Walter Molofsky, M.D. President Jacob D. Gold Vice-President Shaun Honig, M.D. Chief Operations Officer Rachel Akrongold

PLEASE HELP US SUPPORT THE FAS MINYAN!

Baruch Hashem, FAS is open for daily minyanim. Due to the COVID pandemic, it is more important than ever that we support the daily minyan, particularly those who are reciting Kaddish. Your attendance is greatly appreciated!

If you are interested in committing to a certain day of the week, please contact Rabbi Babich ([email protected]) or Jacob Gold ([email protected]). Our minyan meets each morning at 8:00 a.m. Please consult the monthly calendar for Mincha/Ma’ariv times.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON THE COVID-19 VACCINE

Dearest Friends:

New York City is now offering the COVID-19 vaccine to those individuals who are 75 years and older, in addition to other eligible groups.

As of today, the vaccine is being provided to the following groups:

· People 75 and older; · Teachers and education workers; · First responders; · Public safety workers; · Public transit workers; · Healthcare providers and staff with direct patient contact; · Home health aides; · Long-term care staff and residents, among others.

Fifth Avenue Synagogue is very proud to share that our own member, Harry Honig, will be available to assist anyone who needs help in making an appointment or navigating any of the technical aspects of locating a vaccine provider. Harry, a sixth-grade student at Ramaz, will be working on this chesed project as part of his Bar Mitzvah preparations. He will be assisted by his father, FAS Vice-President Dr. Shaun Honig, Site Chair of the Department of Radiology at Mount Sinai Brooklyn.

If you would like Harry's assistance, you may email him at [email protected] or leave a phone message with Sheila Montgomery or Rachel Akrongold at 212-838-2122, and Harry will call you back.

We express the deepest gratitude to Hashem for the blessing of this vaccine and we pray to Hashem that the vaccine will allow our community to be together safely once again at Fifth Avenue Synagogue in the very near future.

With our greatest affection,

Rabbi Eli Babich Chairman Walter Molofsky, M.D. President Jacob D. Gold Vice-President Shaun Honig, M.D. Chief Operations Officer Rachel Akrongold

Message from Harry Honig, Sixth-Grader at Ramaz

My name is Harry Heller Honig and for my chesed project, I am helping anyone who needs assistance with tech- nology sign up for the COVID-19 vaccine, as well as schedule virtual/ in-person doctors appointments. I chose to do this because several older people in my family didn’t know how to sign up for the COVID-19 vaccine, because they don’t know how to use the internet well, text, or email. I think that this vaccine is very important, and I am willing to do whatever I can to help people in my community to sign up for the vaccine. Many people in my shul are eligible for the vaccine, and I would love to help them get the vaccine so that we gather together, pray together, spend Shabbat together, and spend time with our families in a safe way. I look forward to helping everyone get back to normalcy in the near future.
