Our surveys • Two surveys were conducted in the dry seasons of 2017 and 2018. • 200 samples in waters up to 354 metres deep. • 809 individuals counted from 42 taxa representing 19 families. • Observations included a whale shark (Rhincodon typus) and an ocean sunfish (Mola mola). • The waters are dominated by predators and large prey. Key findings • The threatened silvertip shark (Carcharhinus albimarginatus) is more abundant here than any other location. • We saw a decrease in abundance on the second year of sampling, yet the average length of the animals observed almost doubled. predators large prey small prey Why Ashmore Reef matters • It is one of the 65 Australian Ramsar sites, which are locations of significant importance to seabirds, shorebirds, and other marine life they support. • This habitat seems to be an important site for vulnerable reef-associated species of shark such as the silvertip shark. • Ashmore Reef might act as a stopover on Whale shark (Rhincodon typus) the migration path of whale sharks.

    Short Communication AERIAL VISUAL SURVEY OF CETACEANS AND OTHER MEGAFAUNA IN THE BREMER MARINE PARK AND SURROUNDING AREAS Bouchet P, Wellard R, Erbe C, Meeuwig J NESP Emerging Priorities Project EP2 Background Cetaceans are some of the most iconic animals on the planet, yet few of the 45 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises known to occur in Australian waters have been extensively studied to date. Historical commercial whaling records and recent modelling studies suggest that the submarine canyons within and around the Bremer Marine Park provide favourable habitats for a number of cetaceans, including sperm, beaked, and killer whales. The latter have been reported to concentrate in unprecedented numbers in the Bremer Sub-Basin over the austral summer months, forming what is likely the largest seasonal aggregation of the species in the Southern Hemisphere. However, little data on the animals’ ecology, population abundance, or movements currently exist, and while the majority of killer whale encounters have occurred around the heads of the Knob and Henry Canyons to date, it remains unclear whether this area represents a discrete and unique hotspot or whether the Bremer Marine Park may support additional aggregations. Under the NESP Emerging Priorities scheme, the Minister for the Environment and Energy, the Honourable Josh Frydenberg MP, accordingly committed research funds to the Marine Biodiversity Hub (MBH) to assess the extent and likely drivers of the Bremer megafauna hotspot, which is currently fuelling a rapidly growing tourism industry. As part of the programme, aerial surveys were implemented to assess the presence, numbers, behaviour and distribution of large air-breathing vertebrates throughout the region.

    Dear Minister Frydenberg, It has come to my attention that the proposed rezoning of Marine parks plans to drastically reduce the Area of Marine protection as well as reduce the kind of protection available in changed zonings. My company, Diversion Dive Travel, is specialised in Marine Tourism for scuba divers around the world. I’ve observed reefs globally for over 30 years. The Australian Reefs always stand out for their natural diversity and beauty and for the best practice management. With the science based recommendation in 2012 the current system of marine Parks was introduced which offers the Australian reefs a fighting chance to tackle the problems of rising sea temperatures, water acidity and coral bleaching. The current proposal to cut the Marine Parks in size and protection is the last thing our reefs need. I’m not writing for sentimental reasons. As a member of the Dive Industry Association of Australia I fully support our submission (attached). We are talking about a critical decision which will affect the bottom line of every business in the great tourism industry in Australia. Given the overwhelming scientific evidence that Marine park protection of the best chance for the future of our reefs, I can only hope that your government will be able to prioritise reef health! We consider the establishment and effective management of a comprehensive and representative network of marine reserves in Australia’s marine jurisdiction one of the most significant steps that can be taken to ensure the long-term protection of our oceans and coastal waters. WWF-Australia welcomed the 2012 declaration of the national network of marine reserves as this represented a major step forward in our ability to protect Australia’s marine estate while at the same time allowing reasonable access by a variety of commercial and recreational users. However, we were deeply concerned in 2013 by the Abbott Government’s suspension of regulations for management of the newly created marine reserves. Since 2013 there have been significant impacts on key marine habitats around Australia as a result of elevated sea temperatures and extreme weather events linked with climate change. Drawing on work underway in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, a critical response to the impacts of climate change on the marine environment is to establish and maintain effective levels of resilience within our marine areas. A well planned and well managed network of marine parks, where both direct and off-park anthropogenic impacts are minimised, will be an important aspect of achieving and maintaining resilience.

Our work is focused on addressing key threats to the ocean where scuba divers, primarily, are uniquely positioned to address: the loss of sharks and rays and onslaught of marine debris. As a longtime member of the Save our Seas Alliance and a consistent participant in the consultation process on Australia’s marine parks, we deeply appreciate the Australian Government’s consideration of our comments on the draft management plans for the 44 Australian Marine Parks. The Government’s independent Review recognised the extensive science and consultation that led to the creation of the world’s largest, and potentially best managed, network of marine protected areas in 2012. However, the Turnbull Government’s draft management plans recommend reducing, relocating and in most cases completely removing the Marine National Park ‘sanctuary’ IUCN Category II zoning (MNPZ) protection over key habitats, particularly in the globally important Coral Sea. In the face of devastating coral bleaching, mangrove dieback and vanishing kelp forests, MNPZ coverage in Australia’s Marine Parks are even more important now than ever. We are deeply concerned that despite the vast majority of submissions to Parks Australia’s first consultation round last year strongly supporting the restoration and increase in high level marine national park zone protection, the Government is proposing the complete opposite to the consultation outcomes in all but 1 of the 44 marine parks.

They provide places for people to watch wildlife, dive and snorkel, go boating and fish. Importantly, they create jobs in industries like fishing and tourism, and are a source of food and energy. Establishing marine parks is recognised as one of the best ways to conserve and protect marine species and habitats. In 2012, the Australian Government established 40 new marine parks around the country (formally called Commonwealth marine reserves). Matysek Date………………………………………………………………… ii Abstract United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Biosphere Reserves (BRs) provide an example of an integrated sustainability framework that allows for connection between international, national, state / provincial and local levels of conservation and capacity- building. The three major functions of a BR are conservation of biodiversity, sustainable development and support for logistics. As coupled social-ecological systems, BRs explicitly acknowledge that human systems and ecological systems are inextricably linked, and have the potential to bridge ecological and social-political spheres that have been viewed as predominantly disparate entities, rather than as interconnected or nested systems.
